The town endures a severe July heat wave with readings near 94 degrees daily and the first ten days exceeding typical highs. Local observer notes the heat surpasses previous records, while rain totals remain minimal at 9/10 inch for the period.
Mrs. H W Hufendick explains why the town was named Henry in 1833 in memory of General James D Henry who led Illinois Volunteers in 1832 against the Sac and Fox. Hooper Warren is credited with suggesting the name. The first Henry township farm was Elias Thompson and son, now owned by W R Grace & Company, preparing a large fertilizer plant this summer.
Mrs Dave Duffield's niece Kathy Mobeck of Toluca visited the Duffields last week. Mrs Duffield's brother John Bobinski and family, also of Toluca, called on the Duffields Sunday evening.
Funeral services for Elmer Lopeman of Sparland were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Ales Mortuary with Rev. George Hunt officiating. Interment followed in Henry Cemetery. Surviving are a son Clifford, daughter-in-law Virginia, eleven grandchildren, one great grandson, and a sister Mrs Pearl McCall of Lacon. many relatives attended from nearby towns.
Mr and Mrs. Fred Greathouse celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on Friday July 8. Their daughter Mrs. Lee Burr hosted at their Magnolia home with guests including Mr and Mrs. Conrad Bickerman Mr and Mrs. Newman Metzler Mr and Mrs. Golden Sharkey and families. Anniversary cake ice cream and iced tea were served.
The Henry News reports heat driven power cuts at a Princeton press supplier and a drop in staff availability this week. This caused a deficit in community correspondence material and delayed some items.
Putnam County unit school board approved final bill for John Swaney school work totaling 17 240 42 and paid 369 21 to teacher Alan Tuntland for vacation work. They rejected a three year bus contract and voted to buy two more district buses.
Funeral services for Doss King 75 who died Saturday July 9 at St Margaret s Hospital were held Tuesday at Henry Methodist Church with Rev George Hunt officiating. Burial was in Henry city cemetery. King a 50 year Mason and retired farmer, leaves a wife two sisters a stepson and other relatives.
At Hotel Henry about 9 pm Saturday two kitchen workers were burned when hot grease spilled from a deep fat fryer. Mary Engelbrecht head cook and Antonio Deguilanto of Ottawa were treated at St Margaret's hospital in satisfactory condition. Mrs Engelbrecht burned on legs and Deguilanto on face and chest. Hotel operator Mrs Robert Haungs and Oscar Speers of Mendota aided at the scene.
Dean R Earl Trobaugh of the LaSalle Peru Oglesby Junior College will speak at the Henry Rotary meeting on Monday July 18. He will discuss the new Illinois Vater Community college and open the floor to questions at the end. A native of Carbondale he holds a BS from Southern Illinois University and an MA from the University of Illinois with further study at Chicago Denver and Mexico. He joined LPO Junior College in 1937 and in administration in 1941, named dean in 1960.
Dr Edward Keen named superintendent of Putnam County Unit School District 535 and moved with his wife Susan Kay to Granville. He arrives from Clinton and is the district's first superintendent. Leland Amons will lead the high school, now Centerville area students attend, with Hopkins Township High as a feeder. The former Centerville building becomes administrative headquarters.
McNabb residents Mr and Mrs Guy Child and Mr and Mrs Dayne Farr of Henry along with Mr and Mrs Adolph Kuhne of McNabb dined at Ladd Saturday and later at the Kuhne home. Charles Lucas and family in Peru hosted a visit from their son Jerry who is recovering from burns suffered while welding motor wheels. He sustained burns to the chest and stomach. Later, Mr and Mrs Roger Forney joined his parents Mr and Mrs R C Forney at Varna for an evening with Dr and Mrs John Mudry of Wyckoff New Jersey.
Henry city council met July 11 with all members present except city attorney John Wosik. The body discussed Wayne Wallace’s license transfer, night patrol by city employee Hastings, stray dog handling, zoning questions, a pending gas-rate hearing, street work contract, and a 24 hour police force proposal. A census, school ownership, and building rules were also raised before adjournment.
Mrs Ralph Defenbaugh who arrived in 1919 to teach in Magnolia and became postmaster on December 1, 1933 retires July 1 after 32 years and seven months in office. She saw the evolution of mail service including Zip Codes and bulk mail and plans quiet retirement with her husband and three grandchildren.
The Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross with Henry Municipal Pool offers an adults only Learn-To-Swim course starting Tuesday July 19 at 8. The program runs through the swimming season on a flexible schedule. A 10 cent per meeting pool maintenance and basket fee applies. Director is Michael Coleman. Registration blanks are available from Phil Brown at the pool marked Adult Course.
