Putnam County War Bond Drive Tops Quotas in Townships
G Hoyle announced that all county townships reached or exceeded their quotas in the Fifth War Loan drive. Magnolia Township led at nearly 150 percent, with McNabb bank bonds totaling 96 thousand dollars. Hennepin Grange and Senachwine also reported strong performance as Putnam County ends the drive above its overall total of 277 thousand dollars. The county chairman praised workers and the public for pushing the drive over the top.

Marshall County Tax Collections Grow Stronger
Marshall County as of July 31 shows 0 percent outstanding with $404,540.67 collected against a total due of $525,963.47. The year projects higher collections than last year due to railroad valuation increases. last year’s total was $401,492.42 with about $198,000 distributed to taxing bodies. Distributions have largely been on a 50 percent basis with unions and other county purposes awaiting allocation.

Judge Homer Barney Dies At Lacon Sunday
Judge Homer Barney, 77, died Sunday afternoon at his Lacon home after a years long illness. Born December 29, 1866, he practiced law in Lacon after graduating from Illinois Wesleyan University and served three terms as county judge from 1922 to 1934. Survived by widow Effie Stoner Barney and son Lt. Albert Stoner Barney, services were held Tuesday at the family home with burial in Lacon Cemetery.

The wheat harvest is nearly complete with most threshing done. Some shock-cut grain remains to be threshed. Yields ranged from 20 to 30 bushels per acre on poorer land, averaging around 30 and below 20 on the lowest ground. Grain quality tested up to 64 pounds, with an average near 61 to 62 pounds.
Open Bid Friday For New Bridge On Route 29
Bids open Friday at 10:00 a.m. for a new four span bridge on Route 29 across the Rock Island Railway right of way. The project features two 63 foot and two 65 foot spans with a priority saline aiding material access. State plans to rebuild Route 29 parallel to the railway have been urged since wartime material shortages.
