Roberta Gehm won the trophy at the 4-H Advanced Foods Demonstration contest held in the Marshall Putnam area. She demonstrated mixing and baking a decorated coffee cake, with the trophy sponsored by A. and P. Supermarket at Lacon to be presented at the July 27 club fair.
Chamber of Commerce president Hoscheldt announces a county board meeting in Lacon on July 9 at 7 30 pm to discuss zoning and a proposed county wide business site for a Ford plant location. County board members from several towns will attend along with engineers. Federal funding could cover part of the cost.
The towns and villages of Marshall and Putnam counties have received sales tax returns for March. Returns list amounts by town, highlighting local revenue for commerce and municipal budgets.
Funeral services for Walter H Guderjan 62 Varna who died Monday in St Margaret's hospital Spring Valley were at 2 pm Thursday in St Paul's Lutheran church Varna with the Lenz Memorial home in charge. Born May 22 1903 in Evans Township Marshall County he married Ella Arndt in Chicago. Surviving are his widow two daughters Mrs Fred Montz Yakima Washington and Mrs Richard Kemp Phoenix two sons Gordon Lacon and Larry Varna eight grandchildren and two sisters Mrs Emma Hoppe and Miss Elsie Guderjan Varna. He belonged to St Paul's Lutheran church the men's club and the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau.
The Varna Rotary Club memorial service for the late A. R. Wright opened with a piano piece by Joe Kidd and a prayer by Rev. Howard Wolcott. Oliver B. Extrem presented color movies of the 1964 World Series, with several visiting Rotarians in attendance. Next week Rotary Governor Lee Dawson of East Moline will visit for committee talks and an evening address.
Local chatter suggests Caterpillar may open a plant on the Ford family estate north of Henry and near Goodrich and Rohm & Haas holdings. Other rumors point to a new Hennepin to Henry to Lacan radio TV setup and possible daily papers for Henry and Princeton, though most reports are unconfirmed and investigated as untrue.
A local rumor claims President Johnson bought the Swan Lake duck club house north of Henry for a summer White House and mentions a sub-capital to monitor the town. The chatter also hints at caterpillars returning to the area with strong certainty.
Meihners buy the Little Shoppe building across the street from Meihner's Gift Shop on Edward Street. The move to the new site is planned for around August 1, with Kirthe Shoppe moving into the former Al's Shoe Box space in the same block. The Little Shoppe is owned by Raymond and Mary Morrissey of Wyoming MI.
Senator Hudson Sours of Peoria is named to the Illinois Crime Investigating commission representing the Illinois State Senate.
Marshall County Public Aid opens in new location at 626 Second Street on July 1. The staff pictured includes Miss Martha Kelm receptionist, Mrs Edward Harter new case worker, and Francis McEvoy superintendent with Helen Potter Johnson away completing a University of Illinois course for public aid workers.
Funeral services for Elmer J. Hunt 76 of Chillicothe and formerly Henry were held at the Robert Anderson Mortuary with Rev Keith Gaither officiating. Burial followed in Chillicothe City Cemetery. He was survived by his wife two sons two brothers three grandchildren and one great grandchild. services noted his 50 year lodge membership and church ties.
Frank Cramer, Marshall county highway superintendent, announced that bids were taken by the Illinois Division of Highways for 1.88 miles of Tax School road in Hopewell township. Strunk Brothers of Tiskilwa won with 175 623 53 dollars. The project includes grading drainage and a gravel base on Route 87 and Route 17 area, with completion possible in two years due to fill settling and relocation disputes.
Alfred R. Wright died unexpectedly on his farm north of Varna on July 3 1965 at age 80. He had married twice and is survived by his son Harold and grandson Randolph. Wright helped found the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau and chaired Illinois Agricultural Association finance. He served as bank official at the Marshall County State Bank Varna and contributed to Varna Township High School and village government. Pallbearers included Arnold Petersen Emery Johnson Ralph Modro Louis Phillips and Joe Jenkins.
Mrs Mabel Gail Hinman age 90 of Sparland and formerly Chillicothe died at 11 16 am Tuesday in a Peoria hospital after a six week stay She was born December 3 1874 in Bureau County daughter of Thomas H and Elizabeth Kembie Thomas She married Guy B Hinman February 18 1902 and he died April 14 1956 Surviving are two sons Howard Hinman Sparland and Gerald Hinman Lee Summit Missouri a daughter Virginia Scholten Sheboygan Falls Wisconsin and two grandchildren Funeral services set for 2 pm Friday at the Robert Anderson Mortuary Chillicothe with church officiating Burial in Chillicothe City Cemetery Friends may call at the mortuary from 7 to 9 pm today Thursday
The Chillicothe Hospital Foundation invites the public to an open house at Parkhill Nursing Home on July 11. The program starts at 1 30 p.m. outside the main entrance, ending with a tour of the facility showcasing intensive care, nursing care, and convalescent care services as part of the Chillicothe Medical Complex.
Residents of John Swaney Consolidated School District No. 532 vote July 20 on selling Magnolia and McNabb grade school properties to their respective villages for $1. A new district building nears completion on the Swanzy campus. two polling places open 12 noon to 7 pm.
Granville Telephone shareholders met Friday to approve a plan to issue 6 078 new shares at 50 dollars each if the ICC grants a certificate to serve the J L steel territory in Hennepin township. DePue and General Telephone petitions also heard. McNabb and Hennepin Mutual offers to consolidate were not accepted.
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Harden of Manchester Iowa visited from Sunday morning through Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Dayne Farr. Additional Sunday dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Abram Easley of Lewistown and Mrs. Lulu Belle Rogers, Mrs. Farr's mother. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Doyle joined the Farrs and their guests Sunday evening.
