Volunteers gathered at Henry City Hall to inspect fire department upgrades. The project includes new ladders, masks, boots and a panel truck to transport gear, funded with $2,000 and additional support from the fire bureau.
Dorothy Louise Aldrich ten-year-old daughter of Richard and Arlene Aldrich of McNabb drowned Monday afternoon in the Illinois river at Starved Rock state park while wading. A rescue attempt by bystanders and two Chicago men failed as the current pulled the group downstream. Boats searched the river from 5:30 pm and into Tuesday, but the body had not been recovered. The victim leaves three younger brothers.

Mrs. Joe Ryan won 50 percent of the Henry Merchants fund at a Central Park drawing. The first winner under the new drawing, Saturday night marks the sponsor shift with a $200 fund and 60 sponsors.
The Henry Happy Hustlers 4-H club schedules its annual tour for Friday July 9. The group meets at Henry grade school at 9 30 AM and brings sack lunches. Stops include the Lacon Woolen Mill Peoria park picnic Roszell's dairy and a Peoria theater show.
The Henry Restaurant on Route 2 has shut down and will remain closed. Mrs Earl Wilson Lacon has been operating the eatery.
William Berman of Oak Park is jailed in Lacon on burglary charges linked to a series of Marshall County break-ins in Sparland Toluca Serena and Toluca. He faces a $5,000 bond and separate charges after police traced a truck theft and recovered over $3,000.
Marshall county graduates receive teacher training scholarships announced by C W Swanson county superintendent of schools. Winners include Norma White Wenona Bernadine Ricen Wenona Shits Lundgren Wenena Philip Raster Spartand Jerri Shives Mid-County Margaret Burnell Lakose Raum Stoner Henry Willim Akright Henry John Howard Johnson 1953 Mid-County graduate.
John Ash son of Mro and Mrs Howard Ash writes that since returning home to Florida he has been unanimously selected as president of the Dania Chamber of Commerce. He was endorsed by both parties in the election and operates in Dania.
John Alden Hunter, son of Mr and Mrs Alden Hunter of Henry, named district sales representative in the eastern states by LeTourneau Westinghouse of Peoria. His territory covers Southern New York New Jersey Maryland Delaware and Eastern Pennsylvania. He brings years of field experience including roles with 5S J Groves Sons and various distributor staffs. He served in World War II as a heavy equipment instructor with Aviation Engineers, helping to build air bases in the Pacific. He and his wife Juan Chesney live in St Michaels Maryland with their children.
Gerry D Scott Sr was installed as president of the Lacon Rotary club succeeding Dr S M Garrett. B Pace Jr became vice president and Dale Kanive remained secretary treasurer. Board members include Scott Pace Garrett Ehringer Kanive Monier Wyatt. Frida Garretts reported on the Rotary International convention in Seattle.
Funeral services for Emma Quiram 79 lifelong Varna resident were held at Varna Lutheran Church at 2 pm Tuesday. The Rev Carl Mennicke led rites with interment in the parish cemetery. She was born August 27 1874 in Varna to August and Pauline Metzner Quiram and married Albert Quiram February 18 1905. They farmed west of Varna. Surviving are two sons George Varna and Lawrence Streator a daughter Kina Wilham Varna two grandchildren two brothers William Washburn Ernest Varna and a sister Mrs William Bade Redondo Beach Calif.
N. J. Austin, 87, died Thursday at his Varna home after months of illness. Funeral services set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Varna with Rev. Orville K. Bosse officiating. Burial in parish cemetery. Boose funeral home in charge. Complete obituary to follow next week.
Marshall County deputies and Bureau County officials traveled to Fort Dodge Iowa to seize Conrad Lowhr and James Farnham on grand larceny charges for hog theft from Howard S Calley of Neponset Farnham was bound over to the September grand jury but unable to post 3000 bond and remains jailed Loehr preliminary hearing postponed Carley pursued the suspects and their improvised truck and car engine was sabotaged during the chase Authorities also seek Farnham Farnham Loehr for questioning in Stark Henry Perrin and Yorkville counties and nearby areas
Anthony Dewalt suffered a stroke while driving a stock truck enroute to Chicago. He remained conscious after a collision at an intersection near Berwyn and was hospitalized. his condition improved by Friday with speech and movement returning. His wife and relatives rushed to Berwyn as the truck was moved toward Chicago for further care.

Tom Stark of Magnolia, son of Mr and Mrs Fred T Stark, awarded an undergraduate scholarship to the University of Illinois. Stark, saluatorian of the 1954 Magnolia Swaney class, will receive 150 dollars. The Morava scholarship, funded by Weasel Morava, goes to a student 17 to 22, of good character health and scholarship who is financially in need.
The Illinois Department of Public Works and Buildings will open bids at 10 a.m. Friday July 16 for highway projects in Marshall Putnam and Bureau counties. Projects include Marshall County 3.42 miles of surface treatment west of Sparland and Bureau Putnam county line work on Route 29 with multiple bituminous treatments and material quantities. State Rep Dean McCully of Mingak provided the notice to The Henry News Republic.
