Am Ford Wa residents celebrate a local prizes event where approximately 200 attendees witnessed a drawing with awards to Corliss Ingels and other participants. Officials including James Tindal and John Pratt announced winners, with police and local dignitaries present for the award ceremony in Central Park.
Parker wowed crowds at the park with speed feats and balloon sparking stunts on the big Fourth of July show. His shoeless right foot and crowd-pleasing acts drew cheers as he performed under the bandstand with his assistant.
A damaged street light at Second and East Park caused a traffic restriction as a rope and post snapped during removal preparations. Co-owner Brady of the local electric company promised prompt repair with the light to be restored at its East Park site by Wednesday morning.

More than 7 500 people witnessed speedboat heats on the Illinois river shore at Henry. Quad City Motor Boat Racing Association from Davenport, Iowa sponsored nine heats with a half mile course and delays from refueling and barges. Commodore Frank Myer and other local drivers faced several minor mishaps. Bob Townsend ran the electric start as judge, with Ralph Brown Lawrence Newman and Bill Patrick officiating.
Democratic congressional candidate Walter Curley Boyle of Hennepin spoke at Henry’s Fourth of July celebration from the Central Park bandstand. He urged Americans to rally behind veterans and churches to counter communism, defend national defense, and rely on UN action for peace in Korea, asserting divine guidance backs democracy. Mayor L. F. Klein introduced him, with Henry American Legion leaders James Tindall and Francis McEvoy on the platform.
Leo Ely, 62, a former Henry resident, died in Decatur after a heart attack while on a vacation trip. Funeral services were held at St. James church in Decatur with burial in Decatur Cemetery. Surviving are his widow, two sons Robert and Allen, two daughters in Decatur, a daughter in Springfield, and several brothers and sisters including Mrs. Fred Schupp of Sparland.
Nine Women of the Moose lodge 745 in Sycamore Illinois brought a kitchen band to Henry's Fourth celebration on East Park Row. Mrs Albert Hayward formerly Cora Randall enjoyed the crowd and chatted with Henry friends before the group headed home. The bass player drew the loudest applause during the musical portion and renditions of Some of These Days and Oh Dem Golden Slippers. an Indian and Hawaiian performer also drew appreciative cheers. The band appeared to have a good time and the crowd remained curious and entertained.
A Peoria Social Security office representative will be at the Lacon post on Monday July 10 at 2 p m. Miss Marie Keller urges men and women over 65 who worked under social security to attend and learn if they qualify for monthly payments. Families of deceased workers should inquire about payments if the worker was ever covered.
Henry City Council offered an allotment of 23000 by the Marshall County Housing Authority to be used in a slum clearance program. Readiness is uncertain and no definite plan exists, with communities statewide awaiting funds based on population.
Putnam County ends the independence campaign strong for United States savings bonds with about $30,000 invested by July 1, reaching 125 percent of its quota. Marshall County investors had $65,000, or 65 percent of its quota, by the same date.
The Youth Rec plans a bake sale Saturday starting at 9 am in the former Anderson Furniture building on Edward Street. James Miller of Miller Furniture allows use of the site. Floyd Ziegler leads, with Mary Miler chairing baking and Marcia Mercian in charge of sales. Funds support ongoing Youth Rec programs.
Prairie Grain facilities including the river elevators at Hennepin and Lacon were leased as of July 3 1950 to Illinois Grain Terminals. Ray Watson Prairie Grain manager stated the move is part of a state wide grain marketing program to economize and improve service for elevators and producers in the Prairie Grain area. Local patrons can expect changes in service.
Edith Maude Webber Root died at her Chillicothe home at 11 a.m. Monday. Born March 12 1874 in LaPrairie she was the daughter of Porter and Naomi Webber. Survived by three sons Donald Peoria Harold Chillicothe Glenn Louisville. three daughters Lavern Chillicothe Ruth Kehlenbach Chillicothe and B Brown Topeka. a brother Herman Webber Sparland. 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral was at Weber funeral home Chillicothe 2:30 p.m. with Rev Donald Shaw of Washington D C officiating. Burial Blue Ridge cemetery.
George Heininger purchased the Williams tavern on Edward Street in Henry. The sale closed July 1 and Heininger now runs the business.
A large crowd gathered on the Henry east bank for a July 4 fireworks show. Ralph Brown Haddon Perdew Lawrence Newman and Charlies Baker coordinated the display as rockets and pin wheels lit the sky. The American Legion emblem and the American flag finale drew loud applause, honoring Old Glory.
Max Krantz a Polish WWII veteran, long a displaced person, reunites with his brother Charles Krantz in Wenona after years of flight from camps and war zones. He endured army service in exile, Siberia labor, and travels through Persia and the Middle East before settling near Italy and pursuing U.S. immigration. Now 48, he plans to work as a mason with his brother and learns English while maintaining hope to rescue his wife from Poland.
Henry officials highlighted the new 16 foot Chriscraft motor boat used by the state conservation department on Sunday July 2 to help stage outboard races on the Illinois river at Jenry. Captain Fred A. Ford Gerald Strong and George Bruer led course setup and river patrols while officers enforced the 1947 motorboat law with fines from 10 to 200 dollars or 50 to 90 days in jail for violations. the boat carries safety gear and is designed for enforcement and rescue operations.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Green Funeral Home for Edwin Guy Forrest born November 20 1864 in Chicago who died June 29 1950 at age 85. Rev Edward L. Gibson led the service with piano by Mrs Charles Bourdette. Interment in Henry City cemetery. Survived by wife Mary Ellen Forrest two sons Ben and Robert and daughter Gertrude who died in 1905 two grandsons two great grandchildren and a surviving brother.
A Santa Fe railroad disaster near Monica, 17 miles west of Chillicothe, killed at least 10 and injured about 60 when the El Capitan and the Kansas City Chief derailed after a high speed collision. All fatalities were aboard the Capitan. coaches and locomotives left the tracks as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Sincere thanks extend to everyone who helped make the July 4 gala weekend a success. No fights or rowdyism were seen as attendees enjoyed four days of entertainment under strong Legion support. Special citations go to Henry Post 323 officers and the many committees and members who organized grounds, concessions, publicity, raffles, boat racing, fireworks, and finance.
Everett Dirksen Republican candidate for U S senator spoke at the Central Park band stand in Henry to about 700, urged citizens to preserve freedom, recalled signing the Declaration of Independence, and warned of government overreach while praising simple values and faith. He and his wife with daughter Joy then met supporters. next stops included Danville New Salem Galesburg and Chicago with a busy campaign schedule through summer.
James Bozo Barlow 54 a drummer with Gem City Shows died after collapsing Monday during the Henry Henry celebration. He was taken to Methodist hospital at Peoria where he died Tuesday. Funeral services were held at Brennan funeral home with Rev Charles Bennett officiating. Barlow a Raleigh native and lifelong entertainer left a single brother in New York state. The event also saw marriages Zelma ermain and Sed Powers and a birthday party for Martha Smith 6, who travels with the show.
Albert Williams, son of John Williams, won the Downey suit contest held at Downey's Clothing Store on July 4. The prize suit was a blue pin stripe summer weight double breasted. Judges were Francis Keegan Lawrence Bickerman and Roland Smith with Bickerman's son assisting. The event had the largest registration among Downey's three adult contests.
Mrs Marjorie Frantzreb will be acting home adviser for July. She is the assistant home adviser and holds a home economics degree from Purdue University, bringing qualification to the Marshall Putnam Home Bureau role.
