The Als Theatre presents a Buffalo Bill feature as a drive to boost war bond sales. Patrons buying $18.75 or larger denominations in the fifth war loan receive admission and weekly cash awards. Local agents Henry State Bank, the post office, and the Henry Association issue tickets.
The volunteer fire department held a Friday night meeting at a hall chaired by Walter Duke. Officers were elected and plans discussed include fire prevention, inspections of schools and public buildings, and coordination with the Illinois State Association.
Harold H. Helper 44 of Los Angeles and native of Henry was killed at 11 37 p m Monday July 3 when the Santa Fe Chief derailed near Williams Arizona. The disaster left 4 dead including the fireman and three passengers and more than 50 injured among 158 aboard on a Chicago to Los Angeles run. Helper, a Linde Air Products executive, had visited Henry recently and was en route to Los Angeles after Midwest business trips. An Arizona investigation is planned to determine the cause, with officials noting the wreck was one of the Santa Fe’s worst.
Horatio Campbell of Sparland resigns as superintendent of the Sparland highway maintenance crew to join the Santa Fe tail road. Milton Jury of Span recommended for Campbell’s position by the Marshall County Republican Central Committee at a Lacon meeting. Jury is expected to be confirmed by the State highway department in Springfield and has begun work. First assistant on the crew is William Moore of Spartand, appointed weeks ago.
Private First Class Robert Satterfield of Magnolia is in Northern Ireland with U S armed forces. He subscribes to this paper and notes he reads it regularly and enjoys it.
John Morgensen becomes proprietor of the Henry Hatchery on Edward Street after leasing the building and equipment from J Turner Mills. The firm will continue hatchery work and feed sales with improved chick quality and service, reporting over 100 000 baby chicks delivered this season and more than 20 carloads of seeds sold last year. Morgensen, a native of McNabb and longtime hatchery manager since 1941, has expanded training in poultry science and is licensed for flock testing.
Hundreds of troops from Camp Ellis spent weekend in Peoria after pay day. The Peoria courthouse lawn housed sleeping soldiers with many outdoors due to lodging shortages. Thirty soldiers were arrested for disorderly conduct across the city and jailed before being returned to Camp Ellis for military action.
The Henry State Bank reports assets of 1 668 779.73 on June 30 1944 up from 1 484 531.75 three months earlier. Deposits rose to 1 584 752.42 from 1 404 110.45, a gain of 180 641.97, with expectations that Marshall and Putnam County banks show similar gains.
Nello L. Milanesi, 36, of Henry, honored as honor man in Cook and Baker class at the Naval Training School Dearborn Michigan. He scored 93.40 final average and earned rating Ship's Cook third class. Former Henry businessman, wife and two children stay at home. he is a former resident of Spring Valley.
Henry city council backed the Peoria Creamery Company's plan to build a large creamery on Front Street after purchasing two lots and vacating 3 feet of the street to provide level building ground. The project aims for a 600 by 100 foot plant, with annual butter output near a million pounds and production of dried milk and buttermilk, costing about 76000 dollars.
Henry Building Association directors, in a meeting held Wednesday, declare a 4 percent annual dividend for the six months ending July 1, 1944 payable July 10. They caution the rate may drop to 3 percent in January 1945. The association commits another $5,000 in Fifth War Loan war bonds and has already bought $10,000. Total assets exceed $200,000.
Marshall County plans to rebuild Route 29 from Peoria to Henry amid long standing highway problems. Bid opening is set for July 14 1944 at 10 00 am in Springfield for a Crow Creek bridge section 2B on Route 30 District 4. The project includes an AA-3 priority rating to secure materials and expedite construction.
Marshall County Board of Review members are announced by County Judge D M Gregg. William S. Riddell, chairman, will again serve as automatic chairman. Jon Harper and Charlen Stater are named for terms, with reappointments to begin this summer. The board plans to organize early next week for the year’s work.
Staff Sergeant Dean McAllister of Shelby Mississippi and Private First Class Don McAllister of Shreveport arrive for a furlough to spend time with their agents Mr and Mrs Ben McAllister and relatives. Miss Nettie Peterson of Peoria visits Mr and Mrs William Peterman during the furlough period.
The report highlights Fifth War Loan results in Putnam County townships Magnolia Senachwine Granville Hennepin and McNabb. Chairmen Francis Murphy Guy R French L J Hager and others oversee drives with Qs ranging from 30 000 to 70 000 and bond sales totals such as 31964 in Senachwine and 61022 50 in Granville while Magnolia reports 51020 toward 70000. Private James E Cook son of Mrs J H Beneffel spent his 20th birthday July 4 in the Southwest Pacific as an armorer with air corps. his brother Sergeant Chester Cook serves at Herington Kansas.
Private First Class Bussell, son of Mr and Mrs C Ho Bus sel of Sparland, received the Purple Heart from the United States Government for valor in the Normandy invasion. He is a paratrooper who took part in the invasion and was wounded in the Normandy offensive. He has been hospitalized for convalescence in England.
Wenry authorities led by Mayor L F Klein uphold pledge to Henry Street funders. The Stfect Paving program cost over 31000 funded by a special bond issue with no property tax for debt retirement. The year’s tax levy ordinance passed with no street bond taxes and principal plus interest should be paid from state motor fuel tax allocations.
Funeral services were held at the Putnam residence for George M. Freer a longtime Putnam resident who died suddenly June 27 1944 from a heart attack The Rev W F Powell officiated and burial was in Putnam Cemetery A C Lindblom Hiniry Funeral director Freer 68 years four months 19 days old was born in Senachwine Township He had lived in Putnam most of his life except two years in Canada He married Nina Dally in 1902 and Sadie Deltz in 1912 Surviving are his wife Sadie a sister Mrs Edna Law of Tiskilwa a brother Fred Barnhart and two sisters Mrs Abigail and Mrs Raymond Farley He was a member of Modern Woodmen and the Odd Fellows long employed as manager of the Putnam telephone exchange and supervisor of the exchange and lines He and Lon Dally ran a general mercantile business in Putnam The large attendance at the funeral reflected wide esteem Additional local visitors were Mr and Mrs John Burkhardt of Peoria and Mr and Mrs Peter Newhalfen with Mr and Mrs Louis Newhalfen and Peter Jr. spending the Fourth in Chillicothe with Mr and Mrs Harry Meade Audrey and Sharony
