Sparland twirlers join the Henry band for the fifth in the Summer concert series. The event is Wednesday evening July 11 at Central Park at 45 pm. Corporal Leland E Wright of Henry receives the Bronze Star for heroic service with the 96th Infantry Division on Okinawa. Major General Bradley commends his repeated acts under enemy fire aiding the wounded. Wright, medical detach ment member of the 383rd Infantry Regiment, previously earned a Purple Heart. He is a Bradford High School graduate and former University of Illinois student, son of Mr and Mrs Frank Wright.
Memorial services were held this Thursday morning at St Marys Church for Pfe Robert A Heinz son of Mr and Mrs R J Heinz of Henry. He was killed in action near Misenborn Belgium on December 2 1944. The Rev Fr Andrew Schauer and Very Rev Thomas Jordan delivered the sermon. Henry post 323 American Legion and auxiliary participated. War telegrams had been received confirming his death. He was born in Peoria and educated at St Cecilias School Spalding Institute and University of Illinois prior to enlisting in December 1942. He served with the 1st Army and overseas since October 1944. He is survived by a sister Virginia a student nurse.

Henry J Hawksworth Jr arrived home on Sunday for a seven day leave with his family and friends. He has been stationed in Memphis Tennessee for eight weeks and will report to a new base in Norman Oklahoma at the end of his leave. He will be assigned to a VA unit. En route he visited his brother Emil F Hawksworth at the U S Naval Air Station in St Louis Missouri.
Corporal Clifford Fountain son of Mr and Mrs Orie Fountain of Henry arrives home for a 38 day furlough to spend with family and brother Alvin. He traveled aboard the Queen Elizabeth with 16 000 aboard crossing five days amid a storm before two years overseas in England with the 8th Air Force as a ground crew mechanic near London. After the leave he will report to Tampico Florida.
Putnam County again posts a strong showing in the seventh war loan drive led by Hennepin banker John Dore. The county surpassed its $225,000 blanket quota by at least $34,600, and remains second in the state for sales to quota of E bonds. All townships except Senachwine met their targets, with Magnolia, Granville and Hennepin Townships reporting notable overages.
Henry city council met Monday night to approve rebuilding the aging band stand in Central Park. They agreed to use three bent shatinge materials and delayed work until next year awaiting better material and labor availability. The council criticized progress of the Henry band under Arthur Blocher despite several summer concerts pleasing the public.
James Colligan remains fit but confined to home for days. Adam Staab Mrs Anne Ziegler and three grandchildren Jerry Dean Bobby Enos and Mrs Wary Teininger enjoyed a Waterworks Park picnic on July 4 renewing friendships. Verla Steele visited Liberal Kan to be with twin sister Private Verlee Steele still at Fort Riley. Verlee’s cousin Jennette Lutes on vacation from Lacon Woolen Mills will return Sunday. Howard M Nichols of Gary Ind visits Henry with his parents Ben and Mrs. Nichols. Loren Bryan of Ottawa and the Steeles visited Orle Fountain on Sunday.
Work has begun on a new deep water well in Henry city waterworks. H W Packard of Packard well drilling service Washburn expects completion in about a week using modern equipment. The 12 inch diameter 16 foot long screen has arrived for installation. The old shallow well will be abandoned as unreliable.
Congressman Everett M Dirksen of Pekin will speak Thursday July 24 at Lacon to Marshall and Putnam Counties residents. He will present a first hand report on Asia conditions from his 90 day trip covering 32 000 miles in 21 foreign countries funded by remaining presidential campaign funds. If weather allows the talk will be on the court house lawn then in the high school gym with a public gathering of mayors legion commanders and editors to arrange the meeting Fred Bestold of Lacon is general chairman.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Epley and Richard spent Sunday with Mrs Walter Campbell in Princeton. They drove out to view tornado damage north of Princeton. Mrs Parker Erickson and Fred nee Princeton visited Henry relatives and friends Tuesday. Mrs I E Broaddus moved from the upper apartment to Miss Tillie Klein apartment vacated by the Knights. Mrs B T Selby arrives from Chicago tonight to stay with her parents Mrs Hunter. Cabbage plants set by Claude Pembrooks now form heads up to five pounds. Lawrence Wabela Tom Wabel and Mrs Clara Lueh were Saturday supper guests of the Wabbel family. Clarence Wabel on leave left Henry Saturday night. Mary Lou Epley visited relatives in Rockford Sunday through Friday and stays with Mr and Mrs Joseph Beebe in Chillicothe. Jackie Lou Enos enjoys vacation in Bradford with aunts Mrs Joseph Mallet and relatives.
The Marshall County American Legion recently held a fish fry with members from Toluca Lacon Henry and Varna. County officers were elected during the evening including Commander Joseph Hardy Treasurer Ernest Beckman and Sergeant-at-arms Charles Engel. Paul Appleton Wenong post commander hosted the event.
Earl Hubbell formerly of Henry and Peoria and son of Thomas Hubbell of Peoria is on a tight ten day leave from his Navy technician duties at Patuxent River Maryland. He is a civilian employee of the Navy under the Bureau of Aeronautics and works on radar equipment and prototype testing. He and his family lived in Philadelphia while he held the post last October and his father occupies their Peoria home during his absence.
Citizens are urged to buy war bonds as the Fe Buypeay campaign wraps up in two days. Local posts report continued fundraising drives, with officials stressing the impact of bond purchases on national defense.
Emmett Hickey of Camp Grove Marshall County leads a push to buy all available assets at once while Chairman John Dore of Hennepin Putnam County coordinates regional involvement. The decision signals a coordinated procurement drive across multiple counties.
The Putnam County Women's Nation met in Granville on Wednesday June 27 with good attendance. Mrs Ian Smith of McNabb presided. Memorials honored the late President Roosevelt and talks covered Franklin D. Roosevelt life and the United Nations Reef and Rehabilitation Administrator. Mona Welcherding donated a flag. Magella Biekerman received appreciation. Prizes were awarded and refreshments served. Next meeting set for September 26 at Ruth Reavy's home.
Pvt Merlin E DeWalt, who left Illinois May 29, writes from Manila after overseas arrival confirming his status. He trained at Camp Blanding and completed four weeks of airborne prep before transfer to paratroopers, with a home furlough and awaiting embarkation on the West Coast. His brother Kenneth is training at Great Lakes.
Henry city officials delay starting a municipal garbage collection until the next city election. A special tax may be needed to finance about $3,000 yearly costs, with an estimated two year wait before service begins. Support remains strong but legal hurdles must be cleared.

Thirty seven spring lambs from Sam G. Chesney brought the top price at a Chicago market, selling for 16.35 dollars per hundredweight. The Chesney lambs were shipped to the city by Princeton Central Produce Company truck.
The Peoria Grove Cogar Council reports 650 000 pounds of waste paper collected by Boy Scout troops in the Summer Salvage Campaign on June 23. Troop 83 led by Scoutmaster Floyd Fomiskins and Dick Finfgeld gathered 10 5 Gt pounds and the drive faced minor operational issues to be corrected before the next event. The WPB urges greater community effort as paper stock remains scarce for war needs.
Residents in Henry County report the Princeton storm caused more damage than the Lacon tornado years ago. G Surge Red Cross disaster representative set up headquarters at Princeton Air building. The Bureau and State health department assist with sanitary and water protections while a National Guard contingent has been stationed since the storm.
Dr B I Ryder returns from two and a half years overseas to resume practice in Henry. A former captain, he served as battalion surgeon in England Belgium France and Germany and was convalescent at Vaugine Hospital Hines and did two weeks duty at Sheridan before reopening his Henry office. He had served the Henry community for 14 years prior to enlistment.
Putnam County forms its Board of Review with William Downey as chairman. Members include Oscar Bornemann and Murry C. Glenn, with Edwin G. Paxson serving as clerk. Meetings listed for July and August at the courthouse in Hennepin.
Senior Girl Scouts organize an event at the park Monday July 9 at 4 30 p m. Each girl brings a sack lunch and will gather for the meeting followed by a group activity led by Annis Quinn in the park after the session.
