Henry city officials discussed a rat control program to be funded by the city and supported by Hager. A shipment of bait will be stored at the city dump with distribution through the Farm Bureau and local residents. officials aim to reduce rat populations and protect property and health.
The Henry school band under Arthur Blocher will perform two concerts on July 4 at 2:30 PM and 8:30 PM replacing the regular Wednesday show. A separate Saturday event in Central Park on July 10 will include a program featuring songs like Anchors Aweigh and Old MacDonald with the band and Mrs. directing.
Donald Lemkau, Methodist lay leader, takes helm of a Cub Scout group. He serves as chairman of the group’s committee with members Evans Butler, How-Orliss Ingels, George Dr. Kaliher, and Wal Ottrand. The Cubs organization is supported through Peoria district council of Boy Scouts.
Two youth organizations at Presb plan an ice cream social on Thursday July 11 with Ingels in charge. Air and iced tea will be served. Proceeds will aid military aid efforts and aid for Chris Victag.
The Illinois State Grange executive committee asks Secretary Clinton Anderson to restore a fair hog to corn price relationship. Wayne Buck chairs the effort with Leslie Carlson E A Eckert and Dorsey Kirk among signers, sending copies to Truman Bowles Porter and the national Grange office.
General Electric says no price increases are planned for its products. President R Cooper Jr states current price law status does not justify immediate changes and urges distributors to maintain present prices and press retailers to hold current national consumer prices. J Watercott & Company aligns with GE policy to keep prices steady.
The 80 acre John R Crocker estate near Sparland was sold at 1 pm Thursday by executors J C Richards of Peoria Horace Crocker and John R Crocker Francis Keegan and Potter and Potter Henry attorneys handled the sale Richards employed at Caterpillar in Peoria plans extensive remodeling of the house now vacant The farm land is seeded for pasture and hay.
The Sparland school band will present its third summer concert Tuesday evening on July 9 at the high school campus.
Mrs Bertha Wolf and daughter Kathryn returned from Sioux Falls South Dakota to meet their new granddaughter and niece Dorothea. Lee Wolf, son of Pfc and Mrs Wilbur Wolf, visited with her parents Mr and Mrs Royenyon, with Molf as baptism sponsor. Virginia Lindgren, who stayed with her parents Mr and Mrs John Lindgren, left for Tucson Arizona. Frank Lindgren and Chicago family spent the weekend with his sister’s parents. Mr and Mrs Albert Damm and daughter Marjorie Jean performed at the festival with a solo and the Kewanee senior band.
Lacon Woolen Mills baseball club seized first place in the Tri County League by routing Toluca 9 to 1 at Miller's Pastime Park. Gene Dunn drove in three runs with key hits as Boob Newell and Toluca pitcher Zilm matched solidly, Newell fanning 11 in a four hit effort and Toluca’s Capponi and Carrithers among the bright spots for Toluca fading late.
Jim Williams pitched a near no hitter and hit the lone homer as Henry High School’s American Legion squad beat DePue 11 to 1 on their diamond. Williams allowed one hit amid an umpire safe call at first base. Forrest led Henry with a two and a three base hit in four at bats. McBride added a single and a three base hit. Williams, Clark, Hall produced multiple singles to total 11 Henry hits. The win improves Henry to 3-1 on the season.
Washburn Merchants defeated LaRose 1 to 0 in a tight the Tri-County league game. Fagot pitched all nine innings for Washburn striking out twelve, while E Zilm of LaRose fanned seven. A weather delay over an hour followed rain before the crowd. Washburn moves into clear third place with the win, LaRose drops to fourth.
A. E. Ertle, Henry city treasurer, reported receiving $5,000 in tax funds from the county treasurer during June. He noted increases in the general fund balance to $5,698.04 on July 1, with other fund balances listed as Water $951.42, Fire $1,091.98, Motor Fuel Tax $22.24, and Special Paying and Assessment $347.93.
A special primary has been called in Putnam County to choose Republican and Democratic candidates for State's attorney. The primary is set for Tuesday October 1 1946, with the general election on Tuesday November 5. Two returning servicemen, Walter Durley Boyle and James Bumgarnes, are expected to contend for the office.
The Moews Seed Company of Granville uses a navy airplane with three motor dusters to spray DDT powder on hybrid corn fields to combat the corn borer. Operated by Sater Way Corporation Dusting Company of Decatur and piloted by a former army instructor, the plane can carry 600 pounds per load and spray about 400 acres an hour. Ground dusters on detasseling machines also run but cover far less land. The DDT is seen as effective against the borer, which threatens a large portion of the crop in the northern part of the state.
The All-Star Tri-County baseball game will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Marshall Putnam fairgrounds Henry. Players from eight towns join Toluca Roanoke Wenona Minoak Lacon Woolen Mills LaRose Washburn and Washington in a top matchup with no admission charge. A loudspeaker broadcast from Frederick Boers of Lacon and in-game notes by Don Laible will accompany batters averages and pitching records. A fund drive will raise money for a year end Tri County league banquet at the Lacon Country Club.
Henry Bakery showcases a patriotic window arrangement by Mr and Mrs William Beard featuring a bronze Goddess of Liberty bust, red white and blue streamers, miniature soldiers planes tanks and machine guns. A front window on Strawberry Lane repeats the patriotic theme with paper napkins flags and blue white red runners and inverted cone flag holders.
Fifty to five hundred workers are sought to detassel hybrid corn in Marshall and Putnam Counties this year. Many have already registered, with work dates from July 15 to August 5. Boys and girls may register at Farm Labor Office and local stores in Putnam, Hennepin, Mark, Granville, Standard, McNabb, Magnolia, Varna, LaRoce, Toluca, Wenona, Lacow, and nearby towns.
Joe Phillips, after ten years in a paint spraying partnership with his brother at Lowpoint, starts his own business in Henry. He and his wife live on the Albert Hess farm in Magnolia Township, Putnam County, have bought modern equipment, and have spray painted several local buildings including Farm Bureau tanks near Henry depot and the Henry Methodist Church. They plan to move to Henry when housing is available.
Jenry Clay Skinner has been named Putnam County highway superintendent by the Board of Supervisors. The certified and approved engineer has acted in Putnam County under a temporary appointment for months and will continue residing in Princeton while handling duties for Bureau and Putnam Counties.
Private Marion Davis son of Mr and Mrs Jeff Davis of Henry is on a 12 day US Army leave and staying with his parents. He arrived from Camp Polk Louisiana and will return to a camp in New Jersey on July 12. Davis has completed eight weeks basic training after enlisting for 18 months and will be sent overseas in about a month. He is planned to be based in Honolulu Hawaii during overseas duty and expects to be returned to the States after eight months.
Henry Bakery remains a busy hub as opening day success draws in customers from Henry and Peoria. Owner William Beard runs the baking while his wife Magaret handles sales. staff include Mrs. Schmitt, Miss Meridian, Mrs. Hank, Mil dred Roth, Margaret Dysart, Toy Ziegler, Bob Merdlan, Bob Schmitt, and Mrs. Cliff Johnston.
Leon Thompson of Henry and Putnam has assumed full control of the Undercliff parcels at Lake Senachwine including lake fishing and hunting rights, summer cottages, and adjoining farm through a long term lease. Iwey Wright exits, moving to Indian Springs to run his business from home. The Sparling estate funds a trust supporting a Henry old folks home, with the income split among The Salvation Army Peoria The Baby Fold Bloomington and Chaddock Boys School Quincy. Walnut Grove remains operated by Ed Hull.
Robbers broke into Mrs Sadie Roach s Camp Grove service station on Sunday morning June 24 between 7 and 7 30 o clock and stole about 70 to 76 dollars from the cash register along with a suspected amount of cigarettes. Sheriff W O Edwards of Stark County investigated, noting the time suggested the thieves knew Mrs Roach s routine with her leaving for farm chores each morning.
Eriminto Capitani aged 77 coal miner turned farmer died June 30 at the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Carl Moroni Lostant born in Italy February 6 1865 came to the United States early and worked in coal mines near Lostant About 15 years ago he left mining and took up farming His wife preceded him in death 12 years ago He is survived by Mrs Maury Moroni Lostant Emil Capitani Hennepin Mrs Jennie Malavolti Pekin and Mrs Lena Colby Hennepin The body remained at Dy Sart Funeral Chapel until 9 am today when the funeral cortege moved to Hennepin for a high mass.
The first part of July and late June brought moisture and sun that lifted late planted corn to normal for this time of year. Oats and corn are in good condition, showers interrupted haying but ample hay remains, and gardens and truck crops are exceptionally good.

At Annapolis Lt Comdr Paul H Burkhart joined the U S Naval Reserve with a lieutenant’s commission on August 4 1943 and was assigned as an electrical engineering instructor at the United States Naval Academy Annapolis His duties extend another year He is on a three weeks leave in Henry to settle his mother Mrs May Burkhart s affairs He is a Henry High School 1912 graduate with a BS in Electrical from the University of Illinois He previously taught electrical engineering at Lawrence Tech Detroit before entering service After leave he will begin a navy tour Aug 17 to Sept 27 before resuming duties at Annapolis
The Varna Rotary Club wrapped up its fiscal year at the June 25 meeting with President Bob Jamieson presiding. New members John Colip, Richard Medeovan, and Paul Nelson were welcomed. Clarence Austin starts the next year with optimism as Leroy R. Peterson led an evening program after a high school senior trip summary.
The idle Barney building in Lacon is redecorated and rearranged to house O. B. Pace attorney at law and Walter Head insurance and real estate broker. Pace recently returned from service and will serve as state attorney in county.
The town prepares for a four day Fourth of July event starting Wednesday through Sunday July 7. The Bunting carnival with rides arrives and opens tonight. Highlights include Anne All-Star baseball at 2 p.m. Thursday at Marshall Putnam Fall Grounds free fireworks Thursday night boat races Sunday afternoon on the river and prize drawings including a new Ford car worth over 1800 dollars.
The Henry City Council received 750 from five taverns for six month licenses at 160 each. Skinger tavern now owned solely by Ad Skinger after dissolution with Vincent Custer. Custer and Reinbeck filed for a new tavern but withdrew due to ordinance allowing five taverns only. Council may revise rules to allow a sixth tavern later. partnerships dissolved and bonds adjusted.
Henry residents had protested fast driving by autos and motorcycles, prompting the city council to launch strict enforcement. Mayor L F Klein led a late night chase, catching a speeding farm boy on Edward Street. The rider faced Judge William Prather and was fined five dollars plus costs.
