A masked bandit attempted a morning hold up at the Farm yof McNabb bank, wounding staff member Hoyle’s hand, but the plan unraveled. A response by Pratt and other officers led to the bandit’s retreat in a grey 98 Oldsmobile with no rear plate, last seen heading toward Route 5.
Pratt drove to the Histown bank amid fear as police arrived and FBI agents joined the inquiry. Bank employees were questioned for clues about the bandit but, by Tuesday afternoon, no tangible leads had emerged. Federal investigators will continue until the culprit is found.
The Mid-County unit district No. 4 board met at Varna High School on Monday night June 16 with members Allen Buck Hastings Hunt Schoepke present. Longman and Brown absent. The board accepted an audit by M. B. Coker of Peoria confirming the activity fund and books in order, approved a $117.50 audit payment, considered hiring Marine Hamilton as secretary, discussed blacktopping the Varna high school parking area, appointed Joe Jenkins as school treasurer, formed a budget committee, tabled a mileage allowance for band director William H. Douglas, and paid three bills including Harris Trust and Savings Bank and a renewed insurance policy.
At a meeting of church officers, the Sunday school superintendent John Nordstrom announced an all church and Sunday school picnic to be held Thursday evening July 17 at Waterworks Park.
In Lacon Illinois a counter petition with 38 signatures from Varna area seeks to withdraw names from the original 461 signers on the detachment petition against Varna’s Mid-County district. The News-Republican will not publish the names on either list to avoid pressuring signers.
L T Schubert of Lacon, already principal of Mid County junior high, was hired as superintendent of Unit District No 4. He will keep his Lacon post while Varna High School adds a new principal. Resignations were accepted for Louise Hauger Kathryn Ruppel and Emil Hawksworth.
The organization meeting of the county board of school trustees will be held in the office of the county superintendent of schools in Lacon Monday July 7 at 8 p m DST. The board will elect a president for two years and determine term lengths by lot for two four and six year terms. The board will consider petitions on file at this meeting.
Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church in Sparland on Thursday for Mrs Mary Efner formerly of Sparland. She is survived by Ethel Whorell of Long Beach California Carl Cummings of Peoria Midlothian and four children. Interment will be in Sparland cemetery with Rev John Ball officiating.
George Brady fills in as night watchman while regular guard Willie Henkins is off duty for a few days.
A3c William R. Barry based at McChord AFB Tacoma Washington returns from a three nation air voyage to Germany and the Azores. He served as steward aboard the passenger and cargo aircraft making routine runs. His letters describe a rough Montana storm a Minneapolis lumberjack stop and a desolate Hamburg area air base. He flew from the Azores through France to Germany and back via Westover Air Base to Tacoma.
Mrs Pauline Schumacher 69 died at her Varna area home at 1 30 am following lingering illness She is survived by daughter Mrs William Harms and brother Gus Bade both of Varna The funeral is set for Friday July 4 with services at St Pauls Lutheran Church and interment in the parish cemetery A complete obituary will appear in next weeks Henry News Republican
News-Republican reports a spate of Henry robberies including a Francis Britton service station break-in stealing Miller tires and a storage battery. The Sweney Oil bulk plant, run by Ralph Child, was entered twice with June 12 stealing two cases of motor oil and June 21 taking five cases of Gold Penn No 30 motor oil valued at 40 cents a quart.

Henry high school principal Kenneth Brumm announced that John Antes Sears has been engaged to fill the vacancy left by Mary McLinden. Sears, 28, comes from Amboy where he taught and was principal of an elementary school. He holds BA from Bradley 1949 and MA from Northwestern 1950. He is married to Miss Penna Landers of Henry and resides at 900 Main Street. He is a World War I veteran.
Funeral services are set for Thursday morning for John G. Appel 67 who died Monday at his Sparland area home. The Rev Fr Laurence Schumacher will officiate with burial in Henry City Cemetery. Visitation is at Brennan Funeral Home until the service. He is survived by his wife and several brothers and sisters.
Henry post office will be closed all day Friday July 4 with no window service or deliveries. Postmaster L. J. Ries announced the shutdown on Tuesday. Gordon Downey and Paul Snow attended wrestling at the Main street arena on Peoria Tuesday night.
Henry Senachwine American Legion post No 323 will open a three day Independence celebration Friday at 2 PM with a concert by the Henry Senachwine school band under Arthur Blocher. Friday features include a 3:30 PM patriotic address by William G Stratton and a 7:30 PM band concert in Central Park followed by fireworks at Waterworks park with a 9 PM display. The event includes bicycle and tricycle contests, a parade of prizes, motor boat races, and speeches by John T McNaughton and other officials, wrapping Sunday with prize distributions.
Regroup of farmers gathered at Duke Bros hardware store Monday night to hear Fred Cooper from Peoria discuss the International Harvester combine. A large cutaway illustration showed features while the machine operated so observers could note improvements. Refreshments were served at the end.
