A Monday heat wave in central Illinois pushed temperatures above 100 degrees as a furnace wind battered the region. A brief thunder shower on Monday morning and intermittent rains eased danger, but prolonged drought threatens oats and wheat while corn holds.
Repairs are being made at the Umer Hudnut company elevator in Hennepin. Two Chicago carpenters arrived last week to remove and replace iron pipe for the elevator run to the oats. The winter storm blew down part of the pipe. Work resumed Monday with two new pipes installed and other repairs planned. The elevator has been closed since January due to Rosenthal Grain of Chicago’s bankruptcy, with only caretaker J W Abbott of Washburn on duty. No grain has been purchased. stored grain is shipped as soon as the river clears. The firm plans to reopen soon, much welcomed by local farmers who rely on the elevator in Heriepin.
The Illinois State Journal devoted a large portion of its 48 page edition to Abraham Lincoln shrines located across the state. It printed 29 photographs from various death collections and dedicated four full pages to the topic.
A union meeting is planned in Central Park next Sunday evening at 7 30. A tenor singer and a gifted teacher will appear under the direction of Miss Schiffbauer. The Rev Roger F Cressey will be among the speakers as friends are invited to attend and enjoy the evening.
A notice records that the Toulon office moved to Lacon and that Hinken, a WPA Project supervisor for Star Putnam counties, transferred from the Toulon office to Lacon, with implications for county financial offices and local administration.

David Owens 89, longtime Lacon resident and former grocer, died at home Saturday. Funeral held Monday at First Methodist Church with Rev. Charles W. Monson officiating. interment in Lacon cemetery. Owens came to Marshall County in 1856 from Wales, built a local business career. River low water hampers navigation between Spring Valley and Starved Rock, with tow boats facing difficulties and barges grounded west of Utica.
James O Ramp aged 85 of Lacon died at Methodist hospital Peoria Friday morning from injuries after an accidental fall from a roof on a Richland township farm where he supervised repairs. Funeral services were held Sunday from his Lacon home with Rev C W Monson officiating. Interment in Lacon cemetery. Ramp, born in Ohio, lived in Illinois nearly 75 years and retired from farming twenty years ago to reside in Lacon, wintering in St. Petersburg Florida with his daughter Allie. His wife had died years before.
Ellsworth Strode of Magnolia suffered a fractured right leg, torn flesh and mangled arm after his tractor left the road shoulder and toppled down an embankment. He crawled up the bank and was rushed to St. Marys hospital in Streator for treatment.
J L Applen former Bureau county sheriff and treasurer and longtime guard captain at Joliet penitentiary was transferred last week to Pontiac reform school capacity.

The Tag Day sponsored by Henry Public Library last Saturday raised 18.70 to fund new books. Names of sellers include Carole Meridian, Mary Caroline Duke, Eleanor Goodale, Marion Soli, Marilyn Pagemiller. Duke and Goodale led the effort with the top sales totals.
John Crawford 43 of Washburn was found dead by hanging in the barn of his farm last Friday. Health had declined after a severe pneumonia year prior. he had just cashed a bonus and faced no financial difficulties. He leaves wife Gail Jacquot, his father, and brother Charles who runs a Michigan chain store. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church with burial in Mt. Vernon cemetery.
Postmaster F L Wright announces the Henry post office will be closed all day Saturday July 4 in observance of Independence Day. This closure affects local postal services for the holiday.
L E Leigh of Sparland joins Putnam Marshall visitors touring the University of Illinois College of Agriculture open house. They study the famed Morrow plots showing long term soil treatment and crop rotation effects with corn yields from 24 to 62 bushels under different practices.
Manlius officials announce a big Fourth of July celebration beginning Friday night July 3 and running late into July 4. A speaking program will feature Howard Doyle United States district attorney at Decatur as the Democratic speaker. the Republican speaker has not yet been named.
Putnam county Republican picnic set for Thursday August 18 with afternoon and evening programs. Young Republican club and Republican Women’s Club organizing committees. G Wayland Brooks may deliver the evening address and congressman Everett M. Dirksen will speak on national issues.
Henry livestock dealer J. T. Dauber announces two major sales this week. The Princeton sale will offer 400 Hereford cattle including cows calves and yearlings arriving from the Nebraska Sand Hills. The Polo sale features 400 Nebraska cattle and 1,000 spring pigs with buyers from northern Illinois.
Henry Theatre debuts official footage of the Schmeling versus Detroit Black champion fight. Manager Phil Shaver reports strong crowds and continued interest through the run. The film uses slow motion to highlight Schmeling’s knockout power with closeups and a thorough study of his right hand attack. Admission remains unchanged as showings continue tomorrow night and Saturday.
The War Department granted a permit to W. W. Dewey & Sons of Peoria to build a marine leg to the Pekin river elevator. Dewey, which recently acquired the Smith-Hippen elevator, remodeled it and reopened for wheat intake though river shipments will lag. The firm also acquired and plans to rehabilitate three Spring Lake elevators and two on the Hennefin canal before year end.
July 1 marks the start of several Illinois laws affecting relief programs tax rules and licensing. The Illinois Emergency Relief Commission shifts authority to townships while new workmen compensation and occupational disease acts take effect. Municipalities face fiscal strain as relief funds lag behind, prompting governor Horner to seek solutions with Chicago and Cook County officials.
The Marshall county WPA program shows $1,757 in sponsor wages and salaries and $2,311 in materials, with other sponsor contributions at $2,718. Four county projects have not reported sponsor amounts. Through April 80 the WPA area office reports national totals of salaries and wages $2,109,808. materials $947,721. other contributions $769,897.
Marshall county is allotted 51409 in non-federal PWA funds as of April 30, 1936, per a Washington report by the National Emergency Council. Projects include Sparland Waterworks with an allotment and cost of 80909, Henry Streets with 20500 and an estimated cost of 75000.
