The Marshall Putnam Home Bureau prepares for its 20th anniversary gala and annual meeting with nine nine Friday. Past chairmen and advisers will be honored with Miss Clare Gordon as guest speaker. A large birthday cake will feature a candle for each year of the organization. Membership stands at 229 and the group, sponsored by Home Economics Extension and the U S Department of Agriculture, continues active 4-H linkage through members like Clara Crabbs.

Marilyn Barker of Henry County won the district essay contest and earned an all expenses paid trip to Springfield. She traveled Monday and Tuesday with her mother Mrs Melvin Barker to visit sights in the state capital, staying at the Lincoln Hotel.

Presbyterian Young People Hold Meeting at Henry Church
Henry Presbyterian Church young people held their regular meeting Wednesday at 8 15 p m. They hosted a swimming party at the municipal pool last Friday and outdoor games at the church Monday afternoon. A gathering on Friday invited attendees aged 60 or older to join the outdoor grounds party at 30 o clock. Mrs Robert Davis and Miss Lucille Jein attended a dinner for the Ray's restaurant staff in Lacon. Josephine Grieves is leaving her chief clerk position, Mrs Davis has run Marshall County food rationing for over a year, and Miss Klein was appointed price clerk.

Air Raid Alert Held Sunday Afternoon Here
The Henry Institute alert Sunday from 5 30 to 6 00 mobilized defense workers and volunteers. A new feature timed warning signals blue and red tested traffic control and indoors confinement. First aid station at Methodist Church treated simulated wounds with aid from Dr Dysart and Mrs Bayne and a Red Cross team. Fire trucks assisted ambulance duties when Lindblom ambulances overflowed, and later battery trouble reduced ambulance use. Defense Council officials praised the drill and plan another test without advance notice.

Delbert Barnes in training at New England Aircraft School
Private First Class John Delbert Barnes, son of Mr and Mrs Harry J Barnes of Henry, is attending the New England Aircraft School in Boston. He graduated Henry High in 1941, attended Knox College, and joined the Army Reserve Corps at Knox. He trained nine weeks at Miami Beach as a drill instructor before being reassigned to Boston for four and a half months. He reports a pleasant stay in Boston near Fenway Park and notes the challenge of getting home on a three day pass.

Magnolia man Axel Ahlstrom dies after brief illness
Axel Ahlstrom of Magnolia dies at about 4 am after a four to five day illness from cerebral thrombosis. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2:30 pm at Magnolia Methodist Church with Rev. Eugene Stauffer officiating, followed by burial in Magnolia Cemetery. A. C. Lindbloom and Henry funeral directors are in charge.

Barnes Past Alarm Over Corn Borers Threaten Illinois Crops
RM Barnes, attorney from Lacon, sent corn borer specimens to the University of Illinois Entomology Department. Head C L Metcalf warns the European corn borer could be extremely destructive, with females laying 500 to 600 eggs each. Barnes says borers are vastly worse than before and may cut land value by 50 dollars per acre in five years unless farmers burn corn stalks and destroy remaining crop remnants.

Memorial For Service Men To Be Erected
The Frenzy Community War Chest funds will build an outdoor memorial for local World War II service members. Free canning center opens for nearly 100 families
The McNabb Grade School canning center, led by Ione Stansell, begins operation under the federal adult education program. Almost 100 families register to use two dehydrators and four pressure cookers with free heat and supervision, plus a planned commodity exchange among enrollees.
