The Federal Land Bank of St. Louis reports a 19 percent per acre rise for farms sold in 1934 over prior year. The average price per acre was 22.61 dollars from 615 farms, with 515 sold to farmers and local buyers amid drought effects and liberal terms, including 34 percent cash payments.
Charles Roth 82, longtime Lacon resident and former city council member, died suddenly Saturday after feeling ill in the council district. He came to Lacon from Saxon Germany as a child, ran a restaurant and bakery, then bottling works, and served as agent for Pabst breweries. He retired in 1906 and leaves Anna his widow, four daughters led by Rena, two sons Fred and Herbert, and brothers Otto and Fred of Peoria. Funeral was Monday at his Lacon residence.
Wayne Slutz and Sons announce a dissolution sale at Ankabar Acres near Washington IL next Wednesday Feb 6 featuring five colts kin of Ankabar a famed Grand Circuit trotter. The offspring of Axworthy and Peter the Great join stock offered before Slutz moves to Bureau County. Slutz, partner of H J Schmoeger owner of Ankabar, plans to operate from Mike Campbell farm a mile and a half NW of Princeton.
The Bureau county Medical society will hold its next meeting at St Margaret's hospital Spring Valley Il on Feb 5 1935 Dinner will be served at 6 o'clock and a scientific program on Pediatrics will follow Dr Hugh Cooper of Peoria will discuss Fractures of the Ankle and Elbow Dr Raymond Davies of Spring Valley will speak on Anatomical Considerations of the Back Dr K M Nelson of Princeton is president and Dr C R Bates of De Pue is secretary
City officials vow to curb rabies after a child’s bite. Police will patrol with shotguns to kill loose dogs and stray canines. Owners must confine pets and report any unusual dog behavior to authorities to prevent further incidents.
A Putnam county grand jury indicted three men with murder assault with intent to murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the killing of Sheriff Glenn Axline during an attempted bank robbery near Leonore. The trio faces charges after seven witnesses testified including sheriffs from La Salle and Putnam counties and local residents.
Trial on murder charges for two of four bandits who tried to rob the Leonore State bank will start February 23. Judge Robert B. Larkin granted a postponement to allow defense lawyers to prepare. Defendants John Hauff and Fred Gerner are accused in the death of banker J. C. Bundy.
Elmer Merritt, 57, of Tiskilwa, died from injuries after his car left the road and overturned into a ditch. An inquest led to a verdict of accidental death. Carl Swanson, a passenger, survived the crash. Funeral services were held at the Merritt home with burial in Mt. Bloom Cemetery.
Buyers from across the country attend J. T. Dauber’s sale of live stock and farm machinery at his Main Street barns. Francis Keegan and Henry May auctioneered as the event closed in about three hours with total receipts of 10 886 15. A $10 prize went to J Tracy of Wyoming NL for the closest guess.
The American Game conference in New York backs future waterfowl hunting regulations proposed by Chief Darling of the U S Biological Survey and opposes a federal ban. The 21st annual meeting urged Congress to fund migratory bird enforcement, preserve refuges, and study wildlife disease carriers, with Darling citing wildlife funding gaps and urging a fact based duck business.
Wenona residents and friends of the late Sheriff Glenn T Axline, slain two weeks ago near Magnolia, plan a marker to honor his line of duty death. They will meet to discuss funding and place a large smooth boulder with a bronze plaque, funded by public donations already received.
Illinois farm bureau members from 94 counties travel to Quincy for the 20th annual Hindis Agricultural association session. Delegates include A J Wolf Elmer Hunt Lester Leigh and William Burroughs with about 20 more from two counties joining for the eight day event January 29 to 30. The program features state and national legislative discussions with officials such as Earl C Smith George Metzger and Edward A ONeal and a closing address by Donald Pihnpatrick.
In Saratoga last week two deaths occurred within hours as Pina May Hawksworth died after years of arthritis and her father Charles Hawksworth died of influenza and pneumonia. The funeral services were at Bradford's M. E. church with Rev. Stanley Ward officiating, burial in Saratoga cemetery beside his daughter. Charles A. Hawksworth, born Peoria August 7 1857, died January 23 1936 aged 77 years 5 months 6 days. He married Sophia R. King on January 1 1878. ten children survived along with 18 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He lived on farms in Marshall county and Westadford before settling east of Bradford.
Tina May Hawksworth daughter of Charles A and Sophia R Hawksworth was born August 18 1885 on a farm in Marshall county Illinois and died January 23 1935 at her home east of Bradford after more than five years of arthritis. She bore pain for others and lived a Christian life uniting with the M E church in Saratoga and was a member of the Epworth league.
Mr and Mrs Vincent Schubert will observe their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday February 3 with an open house from 2 30 to 5 30 in the afternoon. They invite all friends to call.
At the 20th annual Illinois Farm Bureau convention in Quincy the Jan 30 31 sessions addressed two major state issues including urban street problems and broader legislative policies. Earl G C Smith president outlined the topics in his annual address as about 4 000 to 5 000 delegates discussed them in open forums and business sessions.
County Treasurer Henry W. Schulte and assistants compile 1934 tax bills. Most townships show little change, some higher and some lower rates. State levy omitted due to state income tax funds. Henry township rises slightly from town tax increase, offset by cuts in road and bridge, corporate, and high school taxes.
Edward B. Does 46 a World War veteran died at his Tonica home Thursday after a week long illness. Born March 9 1888 in Mt Palatine he was employed as a fineman for the telephone company in Lostant and was a member of the American Legion Russell Werner Post. Surviving are four sisters and one brother. Funeral services were held Sunday at his residence with burial in Lostant cemetery.
Observations indicate the partial eclipse of the sun on February 3 may be visible in Henry with about half the sun obscured between 9 am and 1 pm. A total lunar eclipse will follow on July 16 from 7:15 pm to 1:45 am.
Funeral services for J K Downey longtime Putnam and Marshall county resident were held at First Presbyterian Church Henry Illinois. Rev R F Cressey presided with Rev J A Johnson assisting. Downey, born April 14 1863 in Henry, Illinois, served as sheriff and county official before moving to Henry and working at Hutchins Downey then Putnam Grain. He died January 26 after years of ill health leaving wife Mina eight children two grandchildren and several siblings and many friends.
Putnam County prepares for state road work with contracts to be let February 3 for a hard road from the Springs Valley bridge to route 89 near Granville. Morine says grading will begin soon with 216 100 cubic feet of earth moved and 411 cubic feet of concrete for culverts and bridges. one land parcel remains under condemnation but will not delay bidding.
The ferry over the river resumes its usual timetable after several interruptions last week due to freezing temperatures that formed ice in the ferry channel. Ferrymen faced difficult going and traffic suspensions on multiple occasions.
