Sparland community unit school district residents will vote on Feb 2 to authorize a increase in the annual school tax. The increase is presented as necessary.
Marshall County Board of Review completes work with 75 to 80 contacts, about 13 complaints on assessments. Sparland unit supports higher educational taxes due to rising costs. the district with an assessed value near 10 million spans several townships and warns reductions in education if funds fail to materialize. Funeral attendance noted for Mrs. Arthur Edwards.
Henry PTA's Country Kitchen fundraiser at the former Madeline Decorating Center exceeded its goal, clearing at least 230 dollars. The event featured a food sale and coffee and doughnuts with committee members including Mrs. Dayne Farr and Mrs. Keith Blackburn. Buford, former NEA president, is set to attend the April PTA meeting in Henry.
The Henry Senachwine high school adds two classes with a third in planning. An advanced farm accounting class meets Wednesdays. members include T A Sticker Horace Morse Nechert Gour Paul Bogner and others. A farm electricity class with 13 students and a farm welding class are also underway with space for a few more enrollments.
Stansell Jo Stansell of McNabb is re-elected president of the Marshall Putnany Fair association at the annual meeting held at the Henry State Bank building. Officers elected include Frank S Clift and John Monier as vice presidents, R H Monier secretary treasurer, and Virginia Finnegan assistant secretary treasurer. The 1956 fair was considered successful and plans for August 27-30 1957 were announced with Ray Newton named to the board as a director replacing H T Bauman.
Five area high schools named their DAR Good Citizenship winners: Velyn Louis of Henry Senachwine, Judy Osborne of Sparland, Beverly Combes of Magnolia Swaney, Janice Ruch of LaRose, and Judy Vest of Mid County. Each is recognized for leadership, dependability, Patriotism, and service with school and community involvement.
Dr and Mrs Walter Bayne will present a program of color pictures from their South America trip. Mrs Bayne will narrate the slides. Sponsored by the Henry Presbyterian Guild. Public invited.
The Mothers' March on Polio begins at 6 30 p.m. with the fire siren signaling the start. The Henry Junior Woman's Club led by Mrs Gordon Rickey will collect donations. residents are urged to turn on porch lights and a club member will call for contributions.
Mrs J F Diane Forrest was named township chairman for the March Red Cross fund drive. The announcement came from Mrs John Roose Red Cross township chairman Tuesday morning.
The Stark County Board of Supervisors meeting in Toulon on January 7 approved adding a described public highway to the State Aid System. The route extends one mile east to the Stark Marshall county line, aligning with State Aid Route 12 and Route 88 to create a hard surface road from Henry to Route 88 through Marshall and Stark counties, extending Western Avenue project cooperation with neighbors to the west.
The week saw nine degrees below zero as the low this Wednesday morning per Justice of the Peace Alien Tule unofficial weather observer. Last Saturday and Wednesday also reached below zero, giving three subzero readings in eight days with five below Saturday and two below Wednesday. Henry recorded 51 inches of snow that week with one inch Thursday four inches Saturday and 0.1 inch Monday. Daily lows were Wednesday 20 January minus 2, Thursday 13, Friday 19, Saturday 9, Sunday 3, Monday 17, Tuesday 14, and Wednesday today.
William Jewsbury, longtime Marshall-Putnam Oil Company sales manager since 1951, will resign March 1 to become a sales representative with the School Equipment Service based in Galesburg. A board meeting announced the departure and a successor has not yet been named.
Rep Dean McCully of Mingak, from the 42nd district including Marshall and Putnam counties, was named chairman of the agriculture committee by Speaker Warren J. Wood as the Illinois House organized its 23 standing panels. All chairmen are Republicans in the 94 to 83 majority.
Farmers in Henry and Marshall Putnam counties may sign up for the 1957 corn Acreage Reserve program at the ASC office in Henry starting Feb. 1. The plan pays for reducing farm allotments and requires reserve land to be not harvested or grazed. The final deadline to sign up is March 8, 1957.
Henry Township prepares for spring caucuses to nominate officers including town clerk assessor and justice of the peace. Incumbents Frank Corr and Alben Tuttle may seek full terms with health permitting while others like Roy Miller and Jonas Bo McFarlin are potential candidates.
The Marshall County Red Cross plans its annual dinner meeting at Lacon Methodist church with church volunteers serving. Elections and reports of service chairmen will be held. Fred Garrell of Lacon to chair the annual fund drive and announce township quotas. County quota set at 5 216. Gladys Sivell of Henry named county chairman. John Boose of Henry named county publicity chairman after Mrs Earp resigned.
Funeral services for Edward Kaifer 41 long time resident were held at 2 30 pm today at Brennan Funeral Home. Rev Melvin Ray Schultz of the Henry Christian church officiated with interment in the Henry Cemetery. Kaifer born January in Whitefield township grew to manhood as a farmer, married to Petrea Lutes August, survived by wife Betricia, one brother William Kafer of Honts and several nieces and nephews.
The Saratoga Methodist pastor Rev. Crapp will return to weekly church services after hospital treatment. He expressed happiness at reconnecting with members and friends at both services, noting improved health. He was released three weeks ago from St Mary's hospital in Streator after a seven week stay.
