After weeks of bickering the Senate and House endorsed county controlled appointments for old age pension commissions. County judges will certify six names per county, the welfare department picks three, and commissions operate locally. Retroactivity is uncertain. law likely takes effect from passage and governor's signature.
Cecil Rowe of the Tony Bogner farm seven miles west of Henry faced a string of misfortunes during a blizzard. His car stalled in 12 to 15 below zero weather, forcing a trek with Yoreey to the John Divilbiss home where she nearly froze and lost consciousness. Snowdrifts blocked the road returning home. On Saturday, while cranking his car, the motor kicked and broke Rowe’s arm. he was treated at Henry hospital.
Musicians singers and dancers are invited to try out for WLS Community home talent shows. Tryouts occur February 7 at Henry gym and February 8 at Varna gym with rehearsals and three evening performances February 13 to 15 led by Olive Kackley. No age limit. past year drew 125 performers from 20 towns.
A mail carrier in Illinois responds to changing ice conditions on the river between Bureau and Hennepin. When the river froze solid a period back service halted and the carrier was redirected to Henry and back. With eight inches of ice now present he walks the north bank to the Gennepin side to deliver mail, reducing trips and skipping some contracts due to extra travel distance.
The U S Forest Service chief announces railroads will offer reduced round trip fares to the North American Wildlife conference in Washington February 3 to 7. Delegates from every state and Mexico are expected, with many groups attending to discuss wildlife restoration and a continent wide conservation program.

In Marshall county circuit court last June a damages verdict of 86 000 for Ruby Collins mother of Robert Colwyn was overturned by the Ottawa appellate court. Colwyn died after a car driven by Donald Hastings collided with a truck in Sparland in 1934. The Hastings owner John Hastings and son Robert faced a suit for 10 000 with insurance involved. The higher court urged a new trial if damages are to be paid.
The Borealis Rex, built by Swain company Stillwater Minnesota in 1888, is named among river steamers abandoned by the Commerce Department on January 10. It operated Peoria to Chillicothe Henry Peru for years and later on the Calcasieu River near Lake Charles Louisiana before sale about 20 years ago.
A Buick sedan driven by Edgar Mottier of 547 West 47th Street Chicago collided head on Friday with a Santa Fe Trail bus at Putnam. Mottier and a passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated at Henry hospital before returning to Chicago. The Buick was destroyed and the bus damaged but no bus passengers were hurt.
The J. T. Dauber public sale, held Monday after a last Thursday postponement, drew a fair crowd with strong bidding. The gross totaled $20 845.40, while Harold Martin of Roanoke guessed $20 870.25 to win the $10 prize. The Daughters of Isabella dance at Emry Theatre is set for next Thursday February 6 with Hinkey's Commanders providing the music. tickets are 50 cents for men and 25 cents for women.
Ed Weers of Lacon announces candidacy for sheriff as a Democrat for the two year term subject to the April primary. He formerly served as substitute watchman for Lacon and has worked at the Lacon Woolen mill for several years.
Mr and Mrs Conrad Roth are the parents of a baby girl weighing eight and a quarter pounds born at their home Wednesday morning around 4 a m. All concerned are doing nicely. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Helgoth and Mr Henry Roth.
District WPA report shows 23 active projects in Bureau county employing 577 workers with 66 from relief. Nine projects in each of Marshall and Stark counties, plus one Putnam project temporarily suspended. Completed Seatonville school improvements funded, new road work in Hall and Princeton townships with federal and sponsor contributions.
G G Guyer aged 85 died at his Pasadena California home on January 22 He was a former Henry Illinois resident and Chicago Board of Trade member He is survived by daughter Leigh Guyer Timkin New York and son in law William R Timkin His wife Maria Davis of Henry preceded him in death He last visited Henry two years ago and would have turned 85 in April
Last Wednesday night the Women s Foreign Missionary society of the Varna Methodist church hosted a meeting for International Peace. Members of the Swedish Lutheran church attended and contributed music. Pastor H J Diercks gave the benediction.

The First State Bank of Walnut will pay a 25 percent dividend to depositors, approved by the state auditor in Springfield. The $6,436.89 payout covers one fourth of $25,747.57 waived during the bank moratorium in March 1933, marking the first payment on the waived amount.
Washington dispatches say 38 million bonds at 50 dollars each will pay soldiers bonuses after Congress over Roosevelt veto. The Government Printing Office is ordered to print the bonds. Leno Seghi aged 23 of Cedar Point died from injuries and exposure after a January Sunday car crash on Route 9A between Granville and Cedar Point. His cousin Reno Galletti survived with frozen hands and feet, both pinned in wreckage two hours as temperatures fell to six degrees below zero. A four person jury ruled death accidental.
The Brown family occupied farm home in Tiskilwa was destroyed by fire early Saturday. Mrs Brown woke to plaster noise. Mr and Mrs Brown two hired men and maid Miss Prances Tyne escaped with little clothing. Buffet and chiffonier saved. firemen could not save the house or furniture.
Robert Thompson, a well known Bradford man and former president of a local state bank, died at his home Saturday after years of ill health. He was 80, survived by his wife, a son William, and two grandsons Billy and Courtney. A son predeceased him. Funeral was held Monday at the home, burial in the cemetery north of Bradford.
The Arnold school house Kirby Mag Magnolia area east of town was destroyed by fire with all contents on a Wednesday. Severe cold kept no session. teacher Mrs. Charles Hillabrand of Tonica had left the stove safe earlier. Neighbors saw flames as the building burned. no saving possible. The school had served five years and was a sturdy old structure.
The Senate overrode President Roosevelt's veto and approved the soldiers bonus bill. Veterans in Marshall and Putnam counties will share 876114 in adjusted service certificate payments, with other nearby counties receiving substantial sums as well. Bond payments of 650 each will be redeemable at post offices or banks nationwide.

Firemen were called twice last week to homes of Minnie Jones and Callie Clawson. Jones residence suffered about 1000 dollars in damage due to roof attic fire and smoke with ice caused by subfreezing weather hampering efforts. Clawson blaze started from an overheated furnace and was controlled with minor damage.
The Springs Valley City Bank, authorized by Auditor Edward J. Barrett, pays a 750 percent dividend on deposits waived during the 1938 moratorium. The dividend totals 28656 dollars, with 448780.03 dollars waived by depositors, now first paid since the moratorium.
