Ed Beeson of Peoria, Ducks Unlimited representative, tells River Valley Rotary Club that restoring natural habitat and enforcing limits can revive North American duck numbers after historic declines. He cites Canada work and U.S. conservation leader Theodore Roosevelt's investigations prompting the movement.
Ir Beeson praised Ducks Unlimited for rapid impact in protecting duck habitats. He outlined Canada land use and Illinois goals, including resting and feeding grounds, water control, and local chapter development in Henry and surrounding areas. Delegates from Henry Rotary and guests from Galesburg and Henry attended the meeting.
Secretary of Labor Maurice J Tobin announced the appointment of George C Ball of Macon as a volunteer veterans reemployment rights committee member under the Selective Service Act of 1948. He will aid returning veterans in regaining their pre service jobs and advise employers and groups on reemployment provisions. He also serves as county veterans service officer in Marshall County and will continue assisting veterans in 1940 under the Act.
Mrs Carlson reports only 165 of 800 letters returned for infantile paralysis fund drive chaired by Raymond Carlson and Henry Whitefield. Final week urged responses as funds remain depleted after 1948 epidemic. a Marshal County child awaits foot surgery, underscoring the need to help others.
Mary Hunter on staff at Evansville Press writes Inquiring Reporter daily and will start a weekly The New Neighbors column featuring new town families with photos taken by staff photographer. She also contributes quips to the Roving Reporter. Mr Winter and wife trained in journalism at Henry News Republican office.
The Methodist Hospital of Central Minors Peoria postponed its dinner meeting at Henry Methodist Church planned for tonight due to icy roads. The event aimed to acquaint church representatives with hospital work and its relation to Protestant churches and the community. Rev Donald Lemkau notified guests and a new date will be announced.

Local sportsmen donate to Ducks Unlimited, funds go to the general New Se s office and are spent in Canada. Yet Mr Beeson says members can leverage influence to obtain State and Federal funds for duck breeding areas in the Illinois River Valley. The Henry Rotary Club dined on oyster soup and crackers, oysters sent as a gift from the Fort Norris New Jersey Rotary Club, a center of oyster production.
The Continental Grain Company elevator on Front Street north of the business district opened Monday. The four silos and three interstices house 125000 bushels with capacity to process 8000 to 10000 bushels per hour. Manager Elmer Dransfeldt of Granville and weighmaster Mekley also of Granville are named. Elmer Carvier of Hennepin is superintendent.
Richard Kemp of Wenona, son of Mrs. Iva Kemp, is nominated for the Sons of the American Revolution Award mirroring the DAR Good Citizenship Award. Nominations come from the senior class and faculty selecting three students noted for truthfulness, responsibility, honesty, punctuality, cooperation, and loyalty to American ideals. Kemp has excelled in athletics, chorus, drama, FSA, and ranks scholastically with dairy farming as an intended vocation.
Monier Halsey of Sparland and Ben McAllister of Henry represented Marshall County at the Illinois Association of County Fairs 39th annual gathering in Springfield. January 24 25 featured a banquet and floor show showcasing this season’s fair amusements. The association urged lawmakers to limit fairs per county. Illinois has 102 counties with many hosting two to five fairs yearly. The group elected William V Jake Ward president, re elected Jack Stumpe vice president, Clifford Hunter secretary treasurer, and directors Paul Powell Butch Lee Dewey Wheeler J Fred Baker Clyde Lee and Hilding Johnson. The Top Line circuit meeting occurred January 23 followed by the harness horsemen banquet and district five US Trotting Association convention.
Magnolia man Paul Greathouse, 28, was critically hurt when a shotgun discharged while he hunted Wednesday with his brother John LeRoy. He suffered a hand and face wound, thumb amputation, wrist fractures, and a head wound. He was transported to Spring Valley hospital for treatment. He is married with four children and employed as a transport truck driver. The accident occurred on the family farm three miles north of Magnolia.
The W S C S of Henry Methodist Church collects cookies for the Methodist Church at Rantoul to be given to servicemen. Cookies should be delivered to the home of Mrs C V Cronkrite by February 2.
The Wenona unit school district election on January 22 leaves Rutland Islanded within Wenona, with Minonk Dana district nearby. Farmers report Rutland residents pledge support to form a consolidated district centering on Rutland, likely absorbing old Rutland Community High School territory and possibly more. County officials warn hearings and official consent will shape any change, while some farmers sign and others refuse pledges. Generosity takes more-practice than anything else in the world.
Halsey Monier of Sparland was reelected president of the Mississippi Valley Trotting and Pacing Association of Northern Illinois at its annual meeting held recently after a hotel gathering in Princeton. Fred Baker of Princeton was named vice-president and C R Brady of Henry County was chosen secretary and treasurer.
Russell V. McKee of Varna, director of the Illinois Agricultural Association for the 18th district and secretary of the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau, spoke at Princeton at the annual Bureau meeting. He praised Bureau County for cooperative spirit while E Y Naffziger of Bureau Township was elected president for his 11th term.
Governor Adlai Stevenson opposes raising the state sales tax this session. He urges rigid economy and aggressive collection to fund welfare and education, while Chicago Democrat Roland V. Libonati says a rate increase to three percent and tighter collections are likely.
Chuck Myers of Washburn, son of Mr and Mrs 3 W Myers and a Purdue University student, entertained at President Truman's inauguration on Thursday January 20 as a member of the Purdue Glee Club.
Wenona State Bank officials and stockholders attended the annual meeting at the Stanton Hotel. A banquet followed the meeting, with bank officials and their spouses present.
Arnold Walters of Perry Memorial Hospital Princeton announces plans for a walking blood bank to supply patients quickly. Donors in good health will be catalogued, tested, and issued blood bank cards, with health checks at intervals and staggered call lists to avoid waste and ensure rapid transfusions when needed.
In Henry a city election is planned with March nominating caucuses for Republican and Democratic tickets and an April election. Mayoral speculation centers on L F Klein whose term expires. Fred A Ford denies seeking the office. Aldermen Ed Wiedman and Uriah Humphrey leave open seats, with William Duke Floyd Dorff, and others possible. Dale Van deVeer may run. two aldermen to be chosen in the third ward along with reelection bids by Harry Moline and Emel Nilson’s successor. Robert Dewey eyed for city treasurer and A B Child expected to run again for city clerk.

Roads, sidewalks, and parks remain hazardous, though public utilities stay operating. Skaters and sledders seek brief relief during sunny breaks while wind complicates conditions.
In Marshall County two unit school districts were approved by voters on January 22. Wenona district designated unit one and Toluca designated unit two. The election reflected broad support in urban and rural areas, surpassing state averages.

Members of the Fundamental Bible Church voted unanimously to affiliate with the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches. The church name was changed to Henry Baptist Church to reflect its Baptist identity, while beliefs remained the same.
Rev Leon Appel preached on what young people should expect in the person they marry after basing his Sunday evening message on a church questionnaire. Other topics included hen pecked husbands and who should carry the pocketbook.
Henry city officials announced the fire department received an Elkhart Jumbo fog nozzle with a 500 gallons per minute capacity, the largest of its kind. Fire Chief Walter Duke said hydrants and upcoming mains will supply ample water, with several more hydrants planned.
Fred Klein and Gerald Moreix join the Sparland outfit as new staff. Klein will be in charge of sales after selling his farming interests. Morris, recently studying in Péoria, becomes bookkeeper and office manager.
The Wenona area in LaSalle County is projected to have about 16 million dollars in assessed valuation, with the new district facing a 72 square mile size and a three-member board. Toluca unit is estimated at nine million in assessed value with about 160 grade pupils and 100 high school pupils, and board members will be elected February 19 from the district.
The Knights of Columbus postponed the bingo party due to road conditions and conflicting engagements. A new date will be set in early February. The next regular meeting is planned for Tuesday evening February 1 at the hall, with a good attendance desired.
Regular monthly meeting of the Henry firemen will be held on Friday January 28 at 7 30 p m at the city hall.
