The Marshall County Red Cross annual meeting in the Henry Dir Building elected officers for the coming year and commended past service. Miss Gladys Sivell of Henry was named chairman with Louis Colehower Wenona as vice chair and Mrs May Dawson Henry as secretary. Committee members Garrels, Lindbloom, and Roscoe Bally were also named.

Polio Fund Drive To-Be Conducted Here
Neal Gregg postmaster at Weona is county chair of the Polio Fund drive for the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Mrs Eradell Metzger of Venona chairs the women’s division with town chairmen named for Henry Sparland Lacon LaRose Toluca Venona. The drive supports local aid and education while funds also back national and state programs. The 1943 polio epidemic was severe with 12 000 cases. treatment is costly and half the money stays in Marshall County for local use, the rest funds national grants and research.

Clarence Tuttle Sells Large Scrap Stock for War Effort
Clarence Tuttle has sold through Peoria dealers a significant scrap shipment for the war effort. He reports over 10 tons of iron, seven tons of tin, and six tons of paper sold. Part of the paper came from a Tiskilwa Boy Scout paper drive. Most iron and tin came from vehicles in his yard. Remaining cars and parts are kept for maintenance and repair.

The Marshall County Selective Service Board under Miss Virginia Allen announces a list of men who reported for final physical examinations and induction in Chicago yesterday. They traveled from Lacon at 5:30 a.m. under the old induction system, with three weeks before active duty for those entering the Army and seven days for Navy entrants. The War Department telegram to Mr and Mrs Ray Warner says their son S/Sgt Wayne Warner is missing in action after a raid over German occupied territory. Friends and relatives believe he took part in a major raid about a week to ten days ago. He served on a bomber crew and details are scarce. more information is expected soon with hope he is a prisoner or will return to United Nations territory.

Mid-Year Graduate Miss Mary Duke Honored at Kalamazoo
Miss Mary Duke daughter of Mrs. Clarence O Duke is among sixteen Kalamazoo College seniors completing graduation requirements this month. Although degrees come at June commencement, mid-year graduates were honored at a chapel service. Duke, an outstanding scholar, joined Phi Kappa Alpha and Sigma Pi honorary societies and Pan American Club, and the College Singers. She majored in English Literature and will join the Kalamazoo Public Library as staff on February first.

William Henry Bell Funeral Services Held in Henry
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon for William Henry Bell 82 at the Henry Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Ward officiating. Born January 21, 1802 in New Castle England he died January 24 1944 at his son in law Harry Kleins Henry home after a life farming near Henry Illinois. He married Mary Ann Flynn in 1884 in Henry. Survivors include two grandchildren Harold Henry and Robert Bell, Marguerite Khan and Harry Klein and Mrs Klein, a brother Robison Bell of Sheldon Washington, and many relatives. Pallbearers were Louis Hofer A J Naumann William Heinrich Barney Bergantz Ben Nichols and Sewell Townsend. Funeral arrangements were handled by Green Funeral Home of Henry.

City Council Backs War Chest Plans For Service Marker
Henry community War Chest members met at the public library with eight in attendance to discuss memorial plans for local servicemen. The council supports placing a marker in the lobby of the Henry State Bank building rather than Central Park, with bank officials and affiliated groups approving. The group also voted to send 60 of the War Chest funds to the Red Cross in St Louis to aid plasma production for wounded servicemen, with Miss Gladys Sivell inviting further donations to 1700 Washington Avenue, St Louis.

Ward Burton Buys Ed Abbott Property on Main Street
Ward Burton completed a real estate deal to own the Edson Abbott house on North Main Street after final papers were signed. The Burton family, back in Henry since November 1, 1943, will occupy the home vacated by Mrs. Mary Onyan who is wintering in Peoria. The Burtons’ furniture is stored at the Laura Farling house, and Burton’s career included Kroger meat departments in both Henry and Hammond. Soil Conservationist Loren Bryan’s family currently occupies the purchased house.
