Fred L. Parks of La Prarie disputes luck and says disciplined self analysis and detailed records boosted his 320 acre operation. He credits improved rotation, careful soil work, and thrift with 1926 profits and seeks 18 to 20 percent returns through efficient farming and higher per acre yields.
Reverend W J Carpenter, minister at the Christian church in Henry since 1919, accepts the pastorate of the Christian church at Camp Point. He and Mrs Carpenter will remain in Henry for about a month as they prepare to move closer to their daughter in Lomax.
In the opening round, Swaney defeated Putndi 24 to 2 at Swaney while Tonica beat Varna 22 to 15 at Lostant. Second games saw Hopkins 53, Hennepin 6 at Swaney and Lostant 41, Magnolia 16 at Lostant. Final rounds set for Granville tonight and Tonica, then Friday and Saturday finals at Varna.
Charles E Diehl 59 former resident of this city died Christmas day at his Wichita Kansas home. He was born June 3 1867 at Henry and worked thirty years for Imperial Flour mill as a salesman. He belonged to Grace M E church was Sunday school superintendent and a 32 degree Mason with Midian Shrine. Survived by his widow a brother M E Diehl Wichita and sisters Mrs N Baker Fort Arthur Texas Mrs C C Barnes Whitefield and Mrs Ella K Hackett Whitefield. Funeral at Gill Mortuary with Rev G C Wilkinson and Rev C A Kitch. Burial at Old Mission cemetery with Masonic honors.
A large service will honor Rev P F Roberts pastor of the First Presbyterian Church Henry on Friday at 7 30 p m The sermon will be delivered by Rev James Benson of Arcadia Avenue Presbyterian Peoria Rev D E Williamson of Peoria will give the charge to the congregation and Rev William M Pumpfrey will give the clerk charge A public reception for the pastor his wife and family will follow with refreshments in the church parlors
Friday evening Mr and Mrs Henry Merdian were surprised as about fifty relatives and friends gathered to celebrate their twenty fifth wedding anniversary. Miss Anna Kapraun and H J Blackburn won the ladies and men’s 500 prizes respectively. Miss Bertha Kapraun received the ladies consolation and Conrad Merdian the gent’s consolation. A dainty luncheon was served at a late hour.
Funeral services for George H Gallup were held at his home, with Rev H G Dusenberry officiating. He was born in 1850 in Petersborough New Hampshire and moved to Marshall county at age five. He married Mary A O Connell in 1877 and had five children. Interment followed at United Presbyterian Cemetery two miles west of his old home. Relatives from Chicago Robinson and other cities attended.
Henry High School will stage the operetta Love Pirates of Hawaii in two acts at 8 o clock Monday in the Henry Theatre. Mildred Madden directs with Helen Mae Forbes at the piano. Cast includes Dorothy Dear Lola Roberts Mildred Green Dorothy Forbes Edna Bogner Edna Haines and several named pirates and Hawaiian girls.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Childs announce the birth of a seven pound baby boy named Donald Wayne born Saturday morning. Mother and baby are reported doing nicely as the family celebrates its first child.
Billy Ross, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Dave Ross of Camp Grove, injured his left hand in an electric wringer Monday morning. His older brother Buddy alerted their mother, who shut off the power and released him. A doctor found no broken bones, only a severe bruise.
The Executive Board of the Marshall Putnam Fair Association voted to finance and save the fair for both counties. A General Organization of Chicago will direct the campaign with township chairmen and committees organizing four to five weeks of education and fundraising efforts to refinance the fair.
The McNabb Shipping association, in a Friday evening meeting at the schoolhouse, elected directors. Officers Axel Helander Ray Barr and Mr Turner discussed Wenona's plan. Rev Rezner of Wenona spoke after an oyster supper. Fred Kessler and Fred Kuehne retained as directors, with Arthur Wilson replacing A L Dixon.
Sunday marked Walter Merdian fourteenth birthday with a six o clock dinner hosted by his parents. Guests included Robert Bogner Eugene Merlian Eugene Stadel Paul Hennessey William Coan Leo and Paul Merdian Mr and Mrs Albert Newhalfen Mr and Mrs John Loomis and their six year old son Robert.
The Henry Municipal Band of Henry Illinois aired a one hour program on WOC Davenport between 7 and 8 PM, with a varied selection led by Geo P Thompson. Messages of praise from listeners across Davenport, Peoria, Bloomington and Des Moines accompanied reports that the town band has developed into a celebrated local ensemble through persistent effort.
A fragmented roster lists owners and drivers for a Davenport bound trip. Names include Lawrence Hunt, Weslié Klein, Mrs F E Fuller, J H Hubert, Earl Anderson, Leo Klein, Dr J H Wagner, Warren Prather, Louis Schultz, Alden Hunter, Harry Nilson, Lou Freddericke, Walter Duke, O H Davis, Ed Hoscheidt, Tony Holler, and others.
Telegrams from St Paul and Davenport praise Henry Band as they depart WOC Davenport Iowa stage after a January 22 concert. Messages from R J Fogerty H J Elliott and Mr Mrs W F Reiley and others send compliments and requests for pieces like Maryland My Maryland Valencia.
Miss Freida Henkins married Clarence Crook of Emmetsburg Iowa in a private 7 p m ceremony at the bride’s father Miles Henkins home conducted by Rev W J Carpenter. The couple, attended only by family, plan to reside on a farm near Emmetsburg.
Rev. T. W. Thompson of Bradford will conduct revival meetings at Boyd's Grove church starting Monday January 81st for two weeks. All are invited to attend.
The newspaper will publish a list of letters and cards received by the band since broadcasting their program in the next issue. All orders for extra copies must be at the office no later than Wednesday noon.
Thursday evening the Sodality of the B. V. M. of St. Marys church held a social in the Knights of Columbus club rooms with about five hundred present. Miss Bertha Kapraun won first prize and Har Helihessey failed to win a game but received a prize. A dainty lunch was served by the sodality officers.
About sixty men met at a stag af fair in Putnara town hall Tuesday evening to discuss shipping association problems and elect directors. The directors selected were Roy Bracken Guy Fretch Joe Dally Hugh Finnegan and Lee Stickel. They will soon elect officers and appoint a manager.
