The sixth annual Putnam Livestock Banquet drew speakers on cooperative marketing and livestock management. Snyder and McKee outlined farm efforts, while officials from Peoria Producers and the Illinois Agricultural Extension attended with remarks on labor, training, and market plans.
Henry Parent-Teacher Association urges all parents teachers and residents to join as charter members before week’s end. Seven dollars must be submitted to Miss Lola School or Dale Rogers or Lyle Lidge in the Soil Conservation Office at the Henry Hotel building. Treasurer Mrs Hunt reports growing interest and hopes many join to support children’s welfare.
J W Oborn Toperench will fill the Henry Methodist Church pulpit for three Sundays until the arrival of new minister Rey al Lemkau. Oborn has spent 55 years in ministry, served the Northern and Methodist Conference, and worked with the Benevolence Board visiting every state. He previously lived in Washington DC and was secretary of the Skidley Metal Hospital board.
Rev Richard E Pritchard pastor of Henry Presbyterian Church will give his last sermon at the Henry union evening service at the Methodist Church Sunday night The service will include special music and plans for a fitting farewell for him and Mrs Pritchard He may depart Henry next week to become a chaplain in the army with orders due from Chicago likely in time for the February 8 chaplain school class If not he will wait for the next class The sermon title is On Being Christian Public is invited.
The Marshall County National Farm Loan Association held its annual meeting in the Farm Bureau building today with about 85 stockholders and guests. Ray Litchfield presided after luncheon. officers presented reports and multiple directors were elected. A detailed year’s work and nominations were discussed. further coverage will appear next week.
S/Sgt. John L. McKirgan thanks readers for a War Chest gift and describes duties with the 27th Evacuation Hospital in Eastern France. He notes moving a 750-bed hospital, living in buildings, and praising Illinois personnel in the unit formed at the University of Illinois. He mentions casualties cared for near Aix-en-Provence and the 7th Army’s advance.
A string of Friday through February auction notices lists sales by Francia Keegan auctioneer and Lyle Marine with Francis Keegan, Walter Overbeck, and Leon Clausen. Dates span Jan 27 to Feb 22 1945, including cattle farms personal property and closing-out sales near Toluca La Rose McNabb Wyoming and McNabb area.
Edwin Davis resigns from Swaney High School after several years. He leaves at semester end to take up farming. Some classes handled by Mrs. Wittenfield. agricultural subjects not offered next semester. Daubs is son in law of John and Mrs Bumgarner of McNabb.
George Engelbrecht a farmer near Henry reports spotting two red foxes sleeping in fresh snow. He shot and killed one, wounded the other, then tracked and finished it. He says a sleeping fox is poor sport but cites shell shortage as justification.
The 1945 March of Dimes drive to fight Infantile Paralysis begins in Marshall County under Neal Gregg, postmaster at Wenona, aiming to coincide with President Roosevelt's birthday on January 31. If funded by that date the campaign proceeds, else it continues. Funds are split between Marshall County and national groups, with half kept locally.
The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis funded a rapid Hickory North Carolina hospital turn around to treat polio victims. In 54 hours a summer camp site became a 170 bed hospital and in eight weeks expanded to 250 beds with help from volunteers, mills, stores, and civic services. Richard Reed attended the Hob by Show in Peoria.
Sgt Ernest Gray son of Mr and Mrs Nick Gray of Henry area has been reported missing in action. A War Department telegram received January 16 in California informed his wife and later his parents. He joined service May 1942, went overseas September 1943 with the 28th Division First Army. He served in England and France after D Day and has been in the combat area since. He was in infantry and had been nominated for the Bronze Star. other medals followed. He grew up near Henry, attended Henry High, Brown's Business College Peoria, and later moved to California before the war.
Marshall Putnam Fair Association held its annual meeting last Thursday evening. Reports show last year’s fair receipts totaling 17413.81 and the complete report is printed herewith. Officers elected for the coming year include President John Garvin Vice-President John Monier Second Vice-President Frank S Clift and secretary treasurer R H Monier. A. E. Ertle Roscoe Ball and Arvid Magnuson were reelected as executive directors for a three year term. Discussion touched on racing programs amid war crime restrictions. The Illinois Breeders Association meeting in Springfield announced the Illinois Topline harness circuit to run 11 weeks next summer, one more than last year. Other circuits plan similar schedules.
Henry Lodge No 199 A F and A M and the Order of the Eastern Star announce a joint card party at the Marshall Putnam Farm Bureau building community room Friday January 26 at eight o clock. Prizes and a late lunch will be offered as benefits with many tables sold in advance.
The fifth labor saving show at Henry attracted over three hundred people with 31 farmer made devices in Marshall Putnam counties on display. The University of Illinois Agriculture sponsors highlighted time saving devices and prizes from Sears Roebuck Foundation and Public Services Company.
Lieut Judd Carrithers arrived in Toluca to visit his parents Mr and Mrs Carl Carrithers. He returned to the United States at Miami Florida in November after 32 months overseas in the China Burma India area. He has served 15 years and reported back to Miami January 2 with his wife joining him there.
Miss Gladys Sivell of Herby chairs Marshall County Red Cross and names Fred G. Garrels of Lacon as War Fund chairman for the 1945 drive beginning March 1. Garrels replaces Louis J. Colehower of Wenena who leaves soon for an extended visit in California as the campaign commences.
Captain Raymond D. French 40 Putnam receives Silver Star for gallantry on D-Day in France as battery commander. He landed on the beach and aided wounded under shellfire then salvaged equipment and protected troops. Son of Mr and Mrs Guy French. He is a Senachwine alumnus who later studied at Illinois University.
The Henry High School band under Arthur Blocher performs its first public concert Monday at 8 p.m. in the Henry gymnasium. Ward Bentley, a Princeton student and magician, will entertain before the armed forces draft ends his local showtime. Bentley has wowed Hollywood stars including Bergen Henrich Fields Rooney Garland Turner and others after a trip there last summer. Admission is 25 cents for adults 15 cents for high school students and 10 cents for grade school pupils. Mrs A M Drummy of Ulnecta, diocesan president of the National Council of Catholic Women, will speak Sunday afternoon at Farm Bureau community rooms. Rosary Society of St Marys Church leads a pot luck luncheon with Altar and Rosary Society of St Josephs assisting. Drummy will be joined by Lincoln delegates in NCW work. FOR VICTORY BUY BONDS.
Field Director Aleck J. Fish and Henry county publicity chair Dick Finf ield will visit Henry January 29 and 30 to assist Marshall County chapter in planning the 1945 War Fund drive. The statewide quota rises to 11 500 from 7 200 in 1944, with Marshall County having previously exceeded its quota.
A Tuesday morning broadcast reproduced an interview with Sergeant Robert Sleater of Henry by a combat correspondent in the Philippines. Sleater, member of a heavy weapons infantry platoon, survived a 75 mm shell strike that wiped out his unit seven miles inland from Damortls beach head near Rosario. His escape occurred 37 months after he left the States, with prior service in the South Pacific and later wounds despite fever.
Report of the death of William A. Renz in Ottawa notes he was a pharmacist for nine years with distant relatives and friends in Henry. Further details and date of death are not provided in the message.
