Central committee members and Senator Hart addressed the group after a luncheon. Leonard Bertuh sought county treasurer, Jeffrey Jeppson Jr served as central committee vice chairman, Dean Momeny led Mendota Republicans, La Salle County chair Alfred Morne and incumbent precinct committeeman were noted. Hart begins early bid for 39th senatorial district as he addresses Putnam supporters at a McNabb luncheon. He defends the 1959 sales tax increase, touts school and welfare funding, and pledges more county stops with endorsements for local candidates.
Arthur C Gauwitz led a four member Teamsters group in Springfield to press for higher wages and better conditions for downstate highway maintenance workers. Governor Kerner promised close attention as Cook County scales were noted to exceed downstate wages.
Henry city council votes to purchase a used 1959 two ton dump truck for 1985 dollars plus 79.50 sales tax after a review by the Aldermanic committee. The meeting also approves using city parks for a Fourth of July celebration with no games of chance and invites a Bax ter Woodman engineer to discuss a sanitary sewer plan with federal funding steps.
Two new employees joined the B. F. Goodrich Chemical plant at Henry on Friday January 19. Stanley Stedman from Henry is hired as a chemical operator and James Fox from Putnam as a maintenance laborer.
Sam Bracken and son Hiram plan a closing out sale on their Putnam area farm, featuring sale of personal property and a 320 acre improved farm. Francis Keegan and Bob Keegan will serve as auctioneers with Henry State Bank acting as clerk.
The report lists winners of Henry Dollars including 80 005369 5 066728 3 087784 with the first place prize unclaimed from last week and added to this week's draw. Last week's 15 Henry Dollars winner was Ernie Kofold of Henry and Mrs James Steele received three Henry Dollars.
Aeplia Journal Star editor George Magenheimer led a travel talk for the Marshall County Historical Society at the Lacon Methodist church. He presented an Illinois route he found of interest to officers Leland Monter, Blake Grieves, and Ralph Wier as part of the society’s annual dinner.
Putnam County Republicans filled out week of petitions with candidates for county treasurer sheriff judge clerk and superintendent of schools while Democrats focused on sheriff and precinct committeemen. Incumbents sought reelection to several posts and party lines listed multiple names from Granville McNabb Hennepin Magnolia and Stand ard precincts. Two filed for school trustees with April 10 primary ballot separate from the school posts.
Mrs Emma D Owen 81 widow of James K Owen died at 3 37 pm Monday January 22 in Methodist Hospital Peoria after admission that day. Born April 33 1880 at Lacon Township Marshall County she married James K Owen September 30 1911. They farmed in Richland then Lacon relocating 1940. Survived by sister Miss Dora Guede and brothers Fred Rippey Herman Otto, plus five nieces four nephews and many cousins. Funeral 2 pm Thursday Lenz Memorial Home with Rev L E Werner, with singing by Mrs John C Grieves and Mrs Curt Bortolotti. Burial Lacon Cemetery. Pallbearers named.
La Prairie County Mutual Fire Insurance Company held its annual meeting on Tuesday afternoon January 23 with strong attendance. Four directors were elected including Eugene Turnbull to fill the unexpired term of the late R Turnbull. Re-elected were Charles Wier Frank Clift and William Gill. Holdovers are James Leigh Theodore Bogner Francia Read Leland Monier and Willis Shearer. In a following organization meeting Leland Monier was named president Bogner vice president Charlie Wilson secretary and R H Monier treasurer Aman Wilson assistant secretary.
Toluca is the top team in the Tri County tournament with standout Tom Gardner and Larry Daghe leading a strong Toluca squad. Henry Senachwine and Mid County are dark horses, while Toluca faces the Mallards in late rounds as the field narrows toward a seventh title for Toluca.
