On January 21 1901 Henry awoke to a blazing fire at the Fair store of J M Powers. The two story frame building fed by dry goods and wind from the south west helped the flames roar through streets destroying several buildings. Fire department and citizens battled the inferno as shingles and lumber floated through the air. Continued on page 3.
Henry city voters face a March 12 primary and April 16 election with petitions due January 31. Incumbents A E Ertle Richard Sivell John Ford and others seek re election. Sivell may be delayed by quarantine. Paskell Otto and Ertle have filed in First Ward. Ford seeks renomination. race tightens as petitions close.
The W R C held its 1929 annual installation of officers Friday afternoon at the Legion rooms. Installed were President Etta Rambo Thompson, Vice President Donahue, Chaplain Mary Wilde, Treasurer Maria Hunt, Assistant Conductor Mabel Maxwell, Matron Matilda Mane, Press Correspondent Etta Rambo, Guard Lennie Barker, and Color Bearers Anna Hawksworth Lenora Ellis Lizzie Zenor. Light refreshments followed the meeting.
Laprairie voters gathered at the town wall to map proposed gravelling for township roads. A rape committee was appointed and two men from the district were named to outline the plan. A further meeting is set for Saturday February 2 to hear committee reports and advance plans for the spring election.
Mary A Meyer Eirich aged 73 years 8 months 20 days died at her daughter’s home in this city following a long illness. She was widow of Joseph Eirich mother of five with two sons and a daughter deceased. The Wenona Shipping Association held its annual meeting January 12 with about 200 attendees from Wenona and visitors from McNabb Toluca and Henry Putnam Shipping Associations. The group reported stock shipments exceeding 100000 during the past year and a weekly volume of one to three carloads handled by the Producers' Exchange Commission Association. Leadership credited Axel Helander as president and Ray Barr for guiding the Wenona group.
Results from Wednesday night Division One at Granville show Magnolia 381 and Henry 25 with Magnolia led by Henry. Thursday’s schedule has Lostant facing Magnolia and Henry meeting Lostant. Division Two at Tonica lists Swaney 25 Wenona 11 Varna 16 Tonica 14 with Swaney vs Varna and Wenona vs Tonica scheduled.
Henry quintet won 26 to 24 after a three minute overtime as Hartley scored twice in overtime. Chillicothe seconds lost 27 to 8 in the curtain raiser amid strong play from Moats and Henry’s defense kept Chillicothe in check.

The Everett Moore sale last Friday attracted many buyers with brisk bidding. Horses topped at 147 dollars and hogs at 341 dollars. Total receipts exceeded 2300 dollars.
An Illinois gas tax measure faces passage in the state legislature. A suggested distribution favors two thirds to cement road programs and road upkeep, with one third returned to counties for gravel roads. The rural areas advocate this plan and urge residents to contact lawmakers.
The Tri County basketball tournament opens January 23 24 25 26 with eight teams from Putnam Marshall and western LaSalle counties. Opening games were held at Tonica and Granville. The schedule includes multiple games nightly across locations leading to a championship on Saturday night.

Information from the Republican office says Lacon officials have started a large force to spread cinders on the Sparland to Lacon road. Work began Wednesday night at six o clock and is expected to finish by Thursday morning before the rush hour.
The Dairy Herd Improvement Association to begin operation in Marshall Putnam held a Saturday meeting January 19 and elected directors Frank Wilson Sparland Ralph Wilson McNabb A R Baker Washburn E H Schilling Minonk and Dr F W Koehler Granville Plans aim to hire a tester to lead the completed association.
H B Forlick a 50 year old road gang foreman for R H Vetter grading company was struck by a southbound C A freight train about a mile south of LaRose while deaf and unable to hear the approaching engine. Witnesses say the whistle blew but he did not hear it. he died from a crushed skull and multiple injuries. The inquest at Lacon returned an accidental death verdict and his body was held pending relatives arrival.
Marshall Putnam Calf Club reports rapid 1929 enrollment with members from Putnam and nearby towns. Early signups include Wilbur Doyle Henry Vern Ransom Paul Bogner Joseph Shearer Harold Shearer Clarence Schumacher Lois Schumacher and many more. Club aims for blue ribbons at next fall fair with January 15 deadline for calves on feed.
Tonight the Henry Kiwanis club meets at 6 15 p m at Hotel Henry with Captain Milton State as a short speaker. He is a well recommended traveler and veteran of many wars. At 8 00 p m a larger public gathering is planned for the same venue with the Kiwanis inviting guests to join them.
Members of the Marshall County Bankers Federation met at Lacon last Wednesday. Attendees from Henry included J L Jones H W Ziegler Elmer Lefman C A A Phillips and Wm C Greek.
Hewitson Franklin Andrews a Henry clothing merchant known as Andrews Clothes Shop died Sunday at age 62 after a paralytic stroke and long illness. He settled in Henry about 40 years ago with wife Lilian Nunes and two sons Thomas and Eugene. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church with interment in Henry cemetery. he was a civic pillar and church trustee.
