Funeral rites at Saint Mary's Church featured a requiem mass officiated by Rev Fr Law Schumacher for Tech Sergeant Charles Schmitt linked to the Iwo Jima battle. Survived by his parents Robert and Evelyn Schmitt and his wife and son John Jr, his service recalled his role with the Fighting Fifth Marines and his participation in the flag ascent on Mount Suribachi.

Charles Kalb a 24 year old Washburn man died when his car skidded on ice and overturned on Route 6 near McNabb early Thursday morning January 28. A coroner jury ruled accidental death at Spring Valley. He was the son of Charles and Rachel Kalb born January 26, 1929 and employed by the Stone Steel Iron Company of Peoria. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Saturday at the Washburn Methodist Church with burial in Washburn cemetery.
