Court records show Joseph Stemas sentenced to life for the sheriff slaying of Orville Litchfield in September 1925. Costs accrued include trial expenses totaling 3726.90 and local charges of 1329.77 plus other incidentals, with grand total bills reaching 5806.67.
H. H. Hall reports his ice house half filled with natural ice cut from Mud Lake. Ice thickness runs 9 to 10 inches and cutting began again Monday. Cold weather keeps the operation progressing rapidly.
Mrs. John Haas and Miss Gertrude Schubert hosted a miscellaneous surprise shower for Miss Marie Balenseifen, soon to wed Clement Schubert. Florence Bogner won first prize in a five hundred game, Martha Louis second, with pink and white decor and a two course luncheon.
Mrs Charles Miller of McNabb is improving after severe burns to face neck and arms sustained two weeks ago when a gasoline lamp plug blew out while she was pumping air into the lamp. Mr Miller believes a valve may have stuck and released the plug during operation.
Calvin Porter McCully 20 of La Rose and Isabelle Cordes 17 of Washburn wed January 12 at Eureka in the Presbyterian manse. The ceremony was in the presence of their siblings Walter and wife. The bride is daughter of Fred Cordes of Washburn. the groom is son of J S McCully of Richland township. The couple farm the Hesse farm near Washburn this season.
Marshall county circuit court reconvened Monday and adjourned until February 19 after handling several cases. A divorce was granted to Helen Richardson from Frank W. Richardson with leave to resume her maiden name. Numerous matters were referred to master, including quiet title and will construction actions, while some cases were dismissed on the docket.
Dr. C. A. Forbes of Bureau county has been hired by a joint committee of the Boards of Supervisors to lead tuberculosis eradication in cattle. He is licensed and experienced as a meat and dairy inspector. Forbes and family will move to Henry with offices in Princeton, succeeding Dr. O. A. Cook who departed last December.
Robert Steele, seven years with Hutchins & Downey, resigns and leaves for Peoria to train for managing a Larkin store. Afterward he will assist locally before taking charge of the Larkin store as Charles Schewe plans to depart for Minnesota.
Fred Bill of Sheffield, brother of Bert Bill of Crow Meadow, bagged his third wolf of the winter near La Prairie with help from Alfred Pierson of Princeton. Bill, a noted wolf hunter, brought the animal to Herman-Webber's timber and is now employed by the state to track and eradicate wolves. Farmers troubled by prowling wolves are advised to contact Mr Bill or deputy game warden Mr Eece.
Miss Elsie Henkins daughter of Miles Henkins wed Lawrence Cross son of D C Cross at Lacon last Wednesday afternoon at 3 60 oclock Justice W Macon performed the ceremony with Miss Rosetta Cross and Mrs Lillian Nighsanger as attendants. The bride wore blue crepe satin. The couple will reside with her father.
Henry May and family of Montrose Iowa were injured when their auto collided with John Salter’s car on a Keokuk hill. Mrs May suffered facial cuts and knee injuries. the two young children were hurt. they were hospitalized and later released to go home as their car was seriously damaged. The Salzers were accompanied by Mrs Salter.
Charles Howard Baker and Caroline Graves Baker died January 9 at St Anthony Hospital in Hays Kansas. Born November 17 1858 in Magnolia he moved to Hayes area in 1886. Survived by wife Clara Severns three sons and other relatives with funeral at M E Church January 12.
Two weeks ago the Kiwanis installed its 1927 officers with J. R. Hunt as president despite his claim to refrain. F. E. Fuller became vice president, Sherman Littler treasurer, Charles P. Green secretary, and Walter Duke named trustee. Tonight the city council is being entertained.
Lola Lutes became the bride of Cecil Rowe in a Saturday evening ceremony at St Edwards Rectory Chillicothe conducted by Rev M J Spalding. Attendants Eina and Omas wore formal gowns. couple plans a short wedding trip.
The region suffers a harsh cold spell with subzero and near minus forty degree readings. Snowfall varies by location with Red Town Corners reporting less accumulation than nearby spots. Plows and shovels are busy as persistent flurries continue to blanket the area and forecast calls for more snow.
Illinois Agricultural Association opens its twelfth annual convention January 26 27 28 in Peoria first since 1920. Senator Charles L McNary of Oregon will keynote with a luncheon speech January 28 at Shrine Temple. The group pursues surplus control legislation tied to the Haugen McNary bills and seeks congressional action aided by state endorsement from President Earl C Smith.
A telegram to Mrs. C E Griffin reports the death of her brother in law James H Somers of Wichita Kansas. Somers formerly resided here and died at his home Sunday at 1 15 P M Full details are to follow.
The Marshall Putnam Fair executive board will meet Friday afternoon to discuss the financial campaign and other items. Representatives will be here Friday and Monday to begin the campaign and set dates for the 1927 fair and the racing proposition.
Miss Nettie Extrom and Louis Holmstrom were married Wednesday at noon in Varna by Rev. K A Nilsson. Guests included close relatives. a three course dinner followed. The couple will reside in Varna after February first in the William Peterson cottage.
Mr and Mrs Herman Bodeen are proud parents of a 9 pound baby girl born Thursday evening. The mother and baby are doing well. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Albert Bodeen.
Four days of games decide Tri-County league teams with two games at Swayney and Lostant on Wednesday two at Granville and Tonica Thursday night. Varna hosts Friday and Saturday with finals in morning afternoon and evening Henry represented by Hennepin which plays at Swayney Granville and Varna.
The Methodist church in Henry invites all residents to hear noted layman E. Dow Bancroft on Friday evening January 28. Bancroft will spend seven nights in the Rock Island district sharing an address for the community.
A caravan of ten automobiles will transport the Henry Municipal Band to WOC Davenport Iowa for a 7 to 8 pm broadcast conducted by Geo P Thompson. The 40 piece organization has held weekly winter rehearsals and will perform a program for radio fans.
Graveling on several roads in Whitefield and Saratoga townships, underway all fall, was completed last week. The new gravel sections open routes that were difficult and nearly impassable each year, improving county mobility.
Charles A Camp, a leading merchant in Henry, died at Methodist hospital in Peoria on January 16 from kidney trouble. His disease began December 26, 1899, with several operations in between. He faced illness with courage, concealing his sickness and maintaining convalescence, though symptoms later returned and a brief improvement followed an last operation.

It covers education at Grand Prairie Seminary early work in dry goods, running Camp House Sulphur Bath Parlor and founding Henry Telephone Company with FE Sterrett. He served as mayor of Henry alderman director of Henry Bridge Company postmaster in 1908 and bank vice president. Funeral at Second Street home included tributes from Rev P Roberts Ella Jenness and Ella S Leech family survivors and representatives from Independent Telephone company. Interment in Henry cemetery.
