Early Sparland Native Otis Swift Dies at 80 in Mundelein
Otis P. Swift 80, a Sparland native, died Sunday January 1 1939 at his sister Mrs Viola S Caldwell home in Mundelein. He was the son of Newton I Swift and Mary T Swift oldest of six. He once ran a Sparland hardware business with brother Newton I Swift and Ebin Swift. He later lived with his sister in Mundelein after a Chicago career with Norton Brothers Can Company and was a Mason. He is survived by sister Mrs Caldwell and brothers Fred H of Albion Michigan and Harry A of Altadena California. Funeral was held January 5 at Mundelein with interment at Oakwoods Cemetery Chicago.

The Marshall County American Legion group held its first meeting of the year in Toluca with about forty Legionaires attending. Joseph Hagemann of Henry was installed as County Commander. Louis Hofer, Adjutant. Clark Harter, Vice Commander. Charles Kuhlman, Secretary-Treasurer. and Olive Ely, Sergeant at Arms. A banquet is planned Feb. 10 in Peoria to honor the national commander, with representation from Toluca, Lacon, Henry, and nearby communities.

Mrs J H Tucker formerly Cleo Meier of Henry was injured Friday when her car skidded on icy pavement near Marseilles and crashed into a telephone pole. She suffers a broken collarbone tibias pelvis fractures and will stay in Marseilles Hospital about three weeks as her husband Mr Tucker and son Curtis Meier assist.

Saturday's Dauber livestock sale at Rock Island Stock Yards drew a record crowd from northern Illinois to Henry. Total sales reached 19 411.60 dollars with about a thousand head of cattle sold including 25 horses, 2650 cattle, 150 brood sows, 300 feeder pigs and 200 blackface ewes. New facilities at the Henry yards hosted buyers and spectators, with a lunch room run by Mr. and Mrs. A W. Sern.
