Mrs. Ruth Hanna McCormick spoke at the Kiwanis club in the new high school gym. The event featured a dinner prepared by the home economics class and performances by local musicians.
In a friendly rivalry at Chillicothe alleys Monday evening the Henry Motor Co team defeated Henry Bottling Works by 46 pins across five games. Scores: Motor Co 3179, Bottling Works 8138. Team members: Motor Co Harold Bullington Robert Daniels Henry Hank Walter Miller Ralph Brown. Bottling Works C J Bullington Horatio Hartley E G Monendez A T Hunter Henry Meister.
A 62 coupe owned by Arch Ey Jennings of Peoria burned after veering off the road near the Dave Plattner farm. The car flipped, caught fire, and was destroyed except for the frame. Mr and Mrs Jennings escaped uninjured. insurance will limit total loss and the cause remains unknown.
Miss Rebecca McAllister and Lloyd Wheeler married two weeks ago in Putnam. A surprise shower followed a chapter meeting, featuring music by Mrs. Pagemiller and others, a kitchen bouquet, cut glass pitcher, and a decorated wagon with gifts. The couple thanked guests and enjoyed refreshments.
The Henry Woman's Club met at president Mrs. Gertrude Newhalsen's home. Officers elected include President Mrs. Irving Broaddus First Vice-President Mrs. Sam Chesney Second Vice-President Mrs. Edison Abbott Recording Secretary Mrs. SURO Mateian Treasurer Mrs. W. Newhalfen. The group planned a January 13 party at the new gymnasium.
A large gathering of Odd Fellows and visitors attended Marshall Lodge No. 68 on Wednesday night. After business, members spoke on the order’s benefits while Grand Lodge I O O F officer George Johns Chillicothe opened the program with music and entertainment. Light refreshments followed.
The Bogner sale on the Joe Bogner homestead west of Henry drew a good crowd and sold well. Francis Keegan, the auctioneer, called it one of the best sales in the vicinity in years and lunch was provided by the Saratoga Ladies Aid.
A pretty wedding was held at 3 o'clock at the home of Mr and Mrs Wilber Hastings in LaRose. Miss Olive Hastings became the bride of Mr Judson A Faw. After March 1 the couple will reside in Washburn.
A large crowd filled the new Henry gym Friday for the second basketball game of the season. Granville employed a stalling offense but Henry, aided by Brown, countered in the second half. Henry narrowed the gap from 12 to 2 at halftime to a final burst, bringing the score to 18 to Granville’s 25 as the locals prepared for next games at Wenona and Magnolia and awaited the big tournament date.
In a fast hard fought night Swaney suffered a 28 to 19 loss to Varna as Varna dominated most of the game. The Swaney seconds fell 17 to 15 after leading at halftime 13 to 10 with fouling and poor free throw shooting costing Swaney. Next week Swaney and Varna meet in Henry for the tri county tournament opener to decide supremacy.
Word comes of the death of F A Lovett a former resident who died at his Chicago home Saturday after a summer operation. He had managed a Henry novelty store for years before moving to Chicago where he lived. Survived by his wife in poor health the funeral was held Tuesday afternoon with several Henry mentions present. Full particulars will be given next week.
In adjourned session the Marshall County Board of Supervisors met at Lacon on Monday for a short discussion on various matters before adjourning to February 13 at 10 00 a m Action on the Auditor s report on the books of county officials was deferred until the next meeting.
The tri county basketball tournament will start next Wednesday evening at 7 30 in the new Henry gymnasium. Granville and Henry meet in the curtain raiser while Swaney and Varna clash in the second game. Come out and root for Marshall County.
Miss Agnes Folbigg sister of N N Folbigg of Lacon and president of the M P Fair Association married John E Dingwall of Evanston on Saturday afternoon in a ceremony reported in Peoria Journal.
Mrs J O Winship hosted the Missionary Society of the Christian church on Friday afternoon. President Mrs Clift opened with prayer and business. topics covered included The Church At Home and Abroad. A phonograph program featured Mrs Cook and Miss Waughop with songs and readings, followed by socializing and lunch.
Dairy experts will answer questions on rations for cows producing 40 pounds of milk with 3.14 percent butterfat at a January 31 dairy feeding school in the John Swaney School gymnasium. Prof C S Rhodes of the University of Illinois will lead the session free of charge, Swaney central in the dairy region.

Robert Preston, born near LaRose and longtime resident, died from pneumonia last Wednesday at Proctor hospital in Peoria. He had been living in Hennepin, fell ill there, was moved to Peoria for care, and his body was brought back to LaRose for burial in Bell cemetery. He was known as a quiet, kindly, industrious man and his passing saddens old LaRose friends.
Mrs. Katherine Murray widow of Michael Murray and longtime Dubuque resident died Tuesday January 17 at age 82 83 according to notice bronchitis was the cause She lived alone after her husband died before moving to a daughter’s home in recent years Her funeral was held Friday at St Josephs Church with interment beside her husband in St Patrick’s Cemetery A longer obituary will appear next week
Deeds for right of way on Route 29 near Bureau and Route 89 from McNabb to the Marshall county line have been sent by the state highway department. Contracts for grading and laying slabs along these sections are set for February 1, with additional segments from Magnolia to Varna and Granville to Hennepin under review. Final completion is expected by year end, creating a comprehensive hard road system for Putnam County.
The Marshall County Bankers Federation met Tuesday evening in the community rooms with representation from all county banks except Varna and LaRose. Farm Adviser F. E. Fuller and a Purina Mills Co. representative gave short talks. Dinner was served at the Hotel Henry.
Mr and Mrs John Haas of Chilli Cothe welcome a seven pound daughter named Helen Frances last Thursday afternoon. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs John Haas of Naperville and Mr and Mrs Vincent Schubert.
The Tyree and Son farm east of Henry drew a well attended sale on Wednesday. The event totaled $1480.15 with horses selling over $50 on average and cattle and machinery bringing fair prices overall.
The Klein Motor Co expects to relocate to its new location on lower Main street, formerly occupied by Henry Fulks, around February 1. Several Henryites have served on the jury at Lacon this week.
Mrs Ola Hunt of Sparland is highlighted as one of five Master Farm Homemakers named at the University of Illinois Home Economics Extension Conference. The program honors homemakers linked to Home Bureau with a gold pin and a detailed points-based worksheet covering farm home, health, recreation, and community work.
The Marshall County Farmers Institute holds meetings starting Monday in Sparland at 10:130 AM with a noon community dinner and an afternoon session. Elmer Olsen and Mrs. Harry Fleming will speak, plus three film reels. Similar programs are set for Toluca, Varna, Venona, and Lacon later in the week with cooperation from Farm and Home Bureaus.
Signs this morning suggest the mild pattern over the west may end soon after a lingering warm wave. An unsettled condition is developing as a warm air mass moves, with considerable rain reported late last evening and coastal seas showing signs of stir.
A carload of Angus steers shipped by Quinn Bros. to Chicago Monday topped the market when selling at 18.50 per cwt. H. A. Pace and J. A. Bogner each dispatched a carload of hogs and Robert Kelley also shipped butcher stock, all bringing good prices.
