Rescue teams press on for Massachusetts National Guard aviators Lieutenant Frank Otis and Sergeant John Gibbons after their Douglas monoplane crashed into the Illinois River lowlands between Henry and Hennepin. Local officials, Gov. Black orders, and divers search the river as evidence and clothing float south of Boyle Farm.
Sheriff Lawrence Ellena of Putnam County confers with Dr. F J Otis as Lieutenant Frank Otis and Sergeant John F Gibbons remain missing since their new Army plane crashed in the Illinois River lowlands between Hennepin and Henry. William Otis, Frank’s brother, stands center, while Lieutenant Otis, an interne at Boston City Hospital, was en route to Moline to enter practice with his father.
Henry post office announces improved service via Bureau- Peoria train 210 starting Jan 11. Mail and parcel post sent before 6 15 p m will depart Henry on the northbound train, enabling Henry mail to reach Chicago earlier than under the previous schedule.
Miss Hallie Warner head of the state library met Henry Library Board and Mayor Fred Ford to review local cooperation plans between schools and libraries. She approved recent reorganizations with librarian Dorothy Feaster and proposed minor changes, stressing ongoing state help. Books available via Henry library at postage cost.
Ford sedan driven by Bill Woodfill was struck by a passenger train at 1 30 last Friday morning while four companions searched for Charles Wherry’s stolen car. Heavy rain and sleet blinded them, leaving the occupants lucky to escape unharmed as the vehicle suffered severe damage.
Mrs. Matthew Appel and her daughter Bernadine attended a Eureka poultry clinic where Mrs. Appel earned the honor of having the flock with the highest egg laying record among 126 flock owners. Her Millway Hatchery flock in Henry includes 285 English Tom Barnes white Leghorn hens and averages about 200 eggs daily, with a single day peak of 206 eggs.
Joseph Stadel fell from a ladder in the hay mow while doing evening chores at his farm. The ladder slipped on muddy ground, striking him on the head and neck and rendering him briefly unconscious. A doctor stitched a cut above one eye and administered antitoxin to prevent lockjaw. His right arm ligaments were strained and he is limited in work.
A car owned by Charles Wherry transporting Rawleigh products was stolen Thursday evening and found Friday morning near the Columbia School in Peoria. Losses include Rawleigh toilet goods amounting to about $20 and a $5 gas book. A second Peoria theft involved Harold Wier’s car left in front of the Alden Hunter residence. both thefts are thought related.
A sequence of upcoming sales listed by date and location includes estate, livestock and public auctions. Notable organizers include L Wood, D H Gregg agent for Gustafson heirs, Althaus Bros, Hayter Russell, Michael O'Brien, Robt Conover, Clyde Streitmatter, James Toft, J T Dauber, and R S Bayne farm near Varna. Local farms and towns such as Esther Ong farm, Bradford, Henry, Chillicothe, Tiskilwa, La Rose, and Varna are named.
The Henry bank stock subscription committee is formed with members including Louis Toemmes J T Dauber Walter L Bayne Otto Meyer and others. They will meet tonight at the Henry Public Library to elect officers and begin soliciting subscriptions while inviting extra volunteers and public critique.
Stock in the Henry bank will be sold for 65 dollars per share with 1 000 shares needed to open the institution. Proceeds of 65 000 dollars will fund 50 000 capital stock 10 000 surplus and 5 000 undivided profits to meet government minimums and ensure initial operating funds.
L. H. Yeck and A. B. Hitchin toured Henry Tuesday night urging a new bank start. They predicted profitability for stockholders and valuable community service. Wayne Hummer and Harry J. Dee, LaSalle bankers, spoke at the K of C hall.
A Tuesday mass meeting at the Knights of Columbus Hall drew over seventy five Henry business leaders to push stock subscriptions for a proposed Henry national bank. Mayor Fred A. Ford announced an officers meeting tonight at the Henry Public Library to organize and invite broader participation. Speakers Wayne Hummer and Harry J. Dee urged a bank to spur growth, noting the need for banking facilities and the improved value of property with a local bank.
Mr Hummer urges Henry to establish a local bank, citing new legislation and past banking lessons. He compares Spring Valley and Henry’s prior two banks, notes $2 million in former deposits, and suggests a $1 million local pool could support profitable service despite initial years.
