A long rundown of New Year visits, family events, and neighborhood happenings. Guests include Mrs. Gaylord, Mr. and Mrs. Georges Ditinan, Mrs. Ray Po, and many relatives visiting in Henry and surroundings. Attendees attended funerals, went to hospitals, and joined community clubs and gatherings over the holidays.
Morris Holmes aged 91 years 2 months and 28 days died after a stroke at St Francis Hospital Peoria. He lived in Henry in late years and is survived by one brother Mil an Holmes and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services are set for Henry Methodist Church with Rev Ward and Rev Walte TaU officiating. pallbearers include Merrill Al Treatia Charles Haines and others. Burial will follow in the Wyoming cemetery.
Our basketball team and bands from Swaney Hopkins and Magnolia travelled to Low Point for an invitational tournament last Thursday evening. The combined bands under Mr Janz performed Friday January 7 and our team lost to Swaney 19 to 27. The event ended with Low Point taking first place. Our team resumes school Monday January 6 after a two week vacation. Ralph Lee Defenhaugh of East St. Louis is briefly attending to escape flu. Friday January 10 our players travel to Varna to play Varna.
Magnolia Township Mutual Fire Insurance Company schedules its annual meeting for Tuesday January 14 at the Millway Hatchery in McNabb. The firm reports 1 077 000 dollars in insurance in force up about 77 1000 in the past year with a favorable five year loss record averaging just over one thousand dollars annually. Officers include Ed Gunn as president and Ernest Mills as secretary with directors L F Boyle Carl Morgensen Fred Kessler Charles O Read Alfred Morine Arthur Wilson and F E Smith. A directors meeting was held recently at Mills residence.
Longtime Magnolia butcher Everatt Hefner John Hauger Jr Fred Dagner and August Munson retire after 33 years in the trade leaving the Magnolia market without their seasoned expertise.
A community note lists many residents at a New Year gathering hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stansell of Lostant. Mentions include Eddie McShane in ill health, school and family visits, and local figures like John Shields, Swaney teacher, and the Munson and Allen families.

The Magnolia hog butchering operation started with Fred in 1906 and passed through multiple sites and partners. His son Billy has helped since ill health forced Fred to wind down, with the work now under one roof at the north end of town and a long history of men who served in this craft.
Public event set for Grange hall on Saturday evening January 13. Elizabeth Anderson visits Bloomington Saturday and Sunday. Ada Mary Anen dines with Ralph Wilson and family. Mrs Arthur Wilson and Marty Gene attend sart family dinner at Starved Rock Lodge on Wednesday noon. Lucile Stansen returns to Champanel to resume teaching. Helen Stansen Anne Sutherland Virginia Cabbedint depart for J. N. Suriday.
Margaret Elens Mead, born May 5 1853 in Oxbow now Putnam County Illinois, died December 1 in Henry. She married John Samuel Mead in May 1881 and had three sons Harry of Chillicothe Frederic and Albert of Peoria and a daughter Florence of Peoria. Memorial services were held January 3 at the Henry home of her brother William Hannum with Rev Edward W Young officiating. Interment was in Henry City Cemetery.
