The first ice of the season was cut Tuesday, reaching five to seven inches thick. Only one day of cutting occurred due to thawing. If temperatures stay cold, more ice may be cut and stored later in the week, unlike last year when no ice was cut.

Lewis Riel formerly of La Prairie died at his Wyoming home on December 24 at age 69. Orphaned at ten, he was raised by his brother Wm. of Lacon. He later worked in bridge construction and married Ida Halsted in 1872, who survives him. The family moved to Wyoming nineteen years ago.
Local notes say the latk band will not be as musical this spring and urges community members to attend faithful practice tonight at 7:30. Band members are told to be in their places promptly with the promise of rewards in spring and summer.
Miss Clara Knoerle and J S Thompson, Lacona’s prominent young people, married Monday at the Methodist parsonage by Rev L M Thompson. Wedding guests included Fred Knoerle, Mrs Harry Wescott, and J D Thompson relatives. They honeymoon in Chicago and will set up house at Lesifa Barr home.
Mr and Mrs L A Phillips announce the engagement of their daughter Helen Gertrude Neel to Mr George Simpson Neel of Des Moines Iowa. The wedding will be held Saturday January 7 at 4 30 p m at the home.
Mrs. Wabbl of west of Henry was attacked by two dogs in Central Park on Wednesday afternoon. The incident tore ligaments in one limb. she was moved to her brother Charles Motter’s home for care.

The Presbyterian church held its annual fellowship supper at 6:30 Friday in the new church basement attended by over 100 members and friends. Rev H G Dusenberry was toastmaster and long-time member O A Williams spoke about church work, women in child training, Red Cross, temperance and suffrage. Dr Paul L Corbin, a returned missionary, gave a短 talk. Guests included Preston Nesbit Sparta Ill Paul Dusenberry Urbana Percy Stocking Chicago Clark Haws Peoria and Frances Smith Chicago among others.
The Rebekahs held an installation meeting Tuesday with Kathryn Roesch and others serving as installing officers. Officers installed included Josephine Knight as Noble Grand Mildred Nilson as Secretary and Maria Hunt as Treasurer. Several members were not installed due to absence and Hannah Nilson served as Acting Past Noble Grand. A new candidate class will be initiated next meeting and refreshments followed.
Rev C C Carpenter and family spent a day in Peoria visiting his mother at Rev W J Carpenter s home. Edward Manski returned to Chicago Monday after spending the holidays with his sister Mrs Herman Hofer.

Adelaide Hickey of Princeville spending a week with her parents. Mrs Frances Kneip returned Saturday night from a visit with her daughter in Chicago. Rev W J Carpenter went to Ottawa to conduct the funeral of J W Johnson former Lacon resident. N C Proctor of Chicago visited his sister Mrs Wm Wheeler Tuesday and Wednesday. Wesley Deal returned home from Peoria Monday after removal of his tonsils. St Johns Guild met this afternoon at the home of Mrs Arthur Smith and elected officers for the coming year.

James Harper, a Peorian and night watchman at Franks printing shop, disappeared December 20 after asking son in law Amos Curtis to ring in and stay an hour. Extensive searches in Peoria and nearby areas found no trace. Family fears for his wife’s health as theories about his disappearance remain unproven.
