A local Boy Scout Troop plans a midweek gathering on January 17 to discuss annual dues. Membership chair Lola Pritchard urges adults to pay dues by January 24 to maintain active status and eligibility for upcoming activities.
A local election event reported in Lythgoe County notes Democratic women preparing for a county meeting. Attendees, including Agnes Leitschuh and Mona Welch, gathered for a potluck dinner around a Christmas decorated hall with a tree. The next meeting is set for March 28, 1945 at Ruth Mitchell’s home in Nolia.
A Chicago Tribune report identifies Corporal Albert DeVoss of Chillicothe as wounded in France. His father Allen DeVoss and mother Dora DeVoss, living in Decatur, were informed he had been overseas nearly four years and hospitalised 65 days after back and breast wounds.

He notes separation from loved ones, rationing, and a quiet combat zone while praising the Living Presence of Christ and asking for prayers as he serves in the regiment. He references the centennial program and the Little White Church on the Prairie back home, expressing gratitude and hope for reunion before another Christmas.
Frances Nicholson received a letter from S Clare Rowen announcing the death of Mrs S Clare Brown the former Etherink home of Indianapolis on Christmas Day in Hollywood California Funeral services were held in Los Angeles with cremation Mrs Brown will be buried in Henry City Cemetery next summer ashes to be kept in California until return Mr Brown a former Henry High School graduate is well known here and in Henry Mrs Brown had been ill for some time and had visited Henry often.
Ralph Paxson held a closing-out sale at the Hans A Otto farm near Magnolia. Total sales reached 6697.85 with strong bidder turnout. Tractors and farm equipment with ceiling prices sold at ceiling. Livestock performed well led by a cow at 144 dollars. cows averaged well over one dollar each.
Edward Foster plans to move to Granville after a January 17 closing-out sale of the Granville farm eight miles north of Henry on the Hennepin road. Mrs Foster, employed at Dr Hartman clinic, will have the property taken over by Bud Deininger, her son-in-law, of Mr and Mrs Foster.
Virgil Hawkins, 22, of Sparland Illinois joined a veteran 15th Air Force long range bomber squadron in the Mediterranean theater. He enlisted January 5 1942 after aerial public safety training in Yuma Arizona and prior US station at San Bernardino California. His unit has flown over 160 missions against German industry and was cited by the War Department for outstanding duty during a Steyr Austria mission. Hawkins is a graduate of Sparland High School and was once employed by Lacon Woolen Mills. His mother Mrs. Lewis E. Green lives in Sparland.
Mrs Isabella Brown and Miss Gladys Sivell announce a Red Cross First Aid Instructors course led by John Kilpacoff January 8 to 13 at the Public Service building in Lacan. Open to advanced first aid holders or those with recent instructor certificates, age 20 must be in good shape with current Red Cross credentials.
Two P-248 army boats stopped at Henry from Saturday evening until Sunday afternoon December 23. They remained for ice clearance by a river breaker and left later Sunday afternoon. The boats drew water supplied by the city of Henry, with C L Applegate of the waterworks running a hose from a hydrant to fill about 1500 gallons for each boat.
Francis Keegan acquires the Henry residence of the late Mrs Ella McAtee. The Keegans plan to move their home later. Walter C Overbeck, attorney, handled the legal formalities of the sale. FOR VICTORY-2UY MORE BONDE.
Census workers begin the 1945 Farm Census in District No 1 with office in Ladd James F Martin supervising assisted by A Manning and others Marshall Putnam counties train in Peoria and Princeton. Workers say census data are for compilation only and not used for tax or enforcement while guiding agricultural information and marketing decisions for farmers and cooperatives.
Swaney and Granville residents joined the Swaney Community Country Woman's Club for a Christmas party with a gift roll call and 5600 games led by Mrs. Walter Boyle. High score went to Mrs. Floyd Allen and low to Mrs. Al win Vollenweider. Multiple housewarmings and visits followed as neighbors hosted gatherings and weddings. Frank Stockhaus returned home from hospital with relatives, and Miss Lucile Stansell returned from Christmas vacation. Community letters noted worship and a vacation pause till April with various local families visiting and hosting dinners and guests.
Sparland travels to confront the Henry Mallards on their home floor after a five game winning run. Henry defeated Bee Hilltoppers 84 to 17 in November while Sparland’s squad holds a strong home court history. Expected Mallards starters include DeWalt Forrest Nader Katiher Heilstedt for a Friday night showdown.
Toluca High School basketball, led by Coach Anton Kress, drew attention after a 38 to 34 win over Peoria Manual in a recent practice game. The Toluca quintet owns a nine game winning streak and is favored in tri county and regional ratings heading into the upcoming tournament.
McNabb Millways junior basketball team dominated Lastant-Tonica 50 to 27 Friday night at McNabb. Wolf led with 14 points as Millways built early leads and expanded them in the second half. Goodwin Jed contributed ten points for the runners-up, while Tonica Lastant-Tonica struggled to keep pace.

Elmer Hunt announces a sale of household goods at the William Hannum residence on Main Street scheduled for Saturday January 13. The advertisement will appear in the next issue. The item includes social notes of local residents and visiting relatives from Christmas and furloughs, with several gatherings and a goose dinner described.
Eleven purebred Short horn calves owned by L F Boyle and son Marshall Boyle of McNabb were sold at the Henry Community Sale last Friday at the fairgrounds for 890 dollars. Purchasers included Ed Daubs Olin Bay Herb Schumacher each buying two calves and Ralph Grasser Phil Edgerley and Charles Russell buying one each.
Pfc Luke E. Miller of Newry returns to the United States landing in California after almost two years abroad with the U S Marines. He trained in San Diego and served in New Guinea Bougainville and Guam where he sustained wounds and earned the Purple Heart sent to his parents Harry Miller and the family. After a 30 day leave he will report to a coastal base.
Marshall and Putnam County school teachers are invited to a special meeting sponsored by the Marshall Putnam Soil Conservation Association on January 12 at 2pm in the Farm Bureau building in Henry. Speakers include O B Fink of the OK Outdoor Conservation Laboratory on the Why and How of Conservation.
Technical Sergeant Jack Ely, recently back on a 23 day furlough, spent eight months overseas flying 30 combat missions as flight engineer on a B-24. He earned the Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters and a Distinguished Flying Cross plus a Presidential Citation. Ely, 20, is the youngest of the Ely brothers stationed in Belgium. He returned with souvenirs from France and Belgium.
Rev Richard E Pritchard pastor of Henry Presbyterian Church announced he passed physical exams to join the army as chaplain in Harvard chaplain school class beginning February 8 He previously failed navy chaplain exams and plans to depart Henry after Christmas to Milwaukee home town of the Pritchards
The Clarence Turpen residence in Henry County suffered heavy damage when a fire starting above the heating stove spread through the northeast area. About 15 to 20 firefighters battled the blaze amid extreme cold. most ground-floor contents were lost and few items on the second floor survived. Insurance agent Robert Thornton paid damages totaling 1421.35 dollars for the loss.
The Crow Creek channel near the new Route 29 bridge has been widened to 200 feet for 600 feet from the new bridge to the old one. Collington Construction Company carried out the enlargement last week as part of the highway grading contract. After completion, the old bridges on the current route will be removed.
On New Year’s Day the Henry area riverfront buzzed with seven self propelled ships and several barges. A large LST army boat led the procession down the river assisted by tugs and a breakwater vessel. The Franklin D Roosevelt and Chicago Bridge ferried as Federal Barge Lines craft while the Glenn Tracr and Whitney tugs moved in support as other barges cleared the way.
The Henry and Putnam area churches plan a joint January program with Methodist Presbyterian and Christian congregations. Service leaders include Richard Pritchard and George Wilson and the Methodist church will host monthly events as the area unites in shared worship while some churches endure without a full ministry.
Marshall County Red Cross chapter announced a 1940 War Fund goal of 10 800 dollars with Louis J. Colehower of Wenona as county drive chairman and Gladys Sivel of Henry as chapter chairperson. The drive will allocate quotas for towns and fund national Red Cross needs. The 1945 and 1946 notes appear, urging county residents to contribute to sustain operations locally and abroad. Putnam County has not yet received its quota notice.
Ed Bogner will move repair equipment from Henry Motor Company to a building owned by Harrys Moshe at the corner of Street and Hast Pack Row. He will run an automotive machinist shop focusing on cylinder honing valve work and related tasks, not a full repair shop.
