Postal Rates Increase Goes Into Effect January Seventh

Postmaster Ries reminds customers of new postal charges effective January 7. First class letters six cents up to 13 ounces, air mail ten cents per ounce for heavier pieces, and five cent post cards with eight cent air post cards. Rates for third class rise, with special handling for eight to sixteen ounce parcels. Second class, bulk third class, and other categories also increase. local post office can provide rate details.

New Towboat Rita Barta Passes Henry on New Year’s Night

The Rita Barta a 180 foot 6450 hp steel towboat owned by Mississippi Valley Harte Cine Co passed Henry on New Year’s night pushing up the river fifteen barges of coal and iron ore three abreast. The vessel designed for up to 40 barges on the Mississippi operates between St Louis and New Orleans and will accommodate up to 20 aboard with five staterooms. Dave Dewey son of Mr and Mrs Bob Dewey and a Henry-Senachwine student observed the event aided by Ham radio and the Waterways Journal subscription.

Vandals Shoot Windows at Henry Senachwine High

Sheriff's Deputy Joe Ryan says vandals sought after as twelve classroom windows were shot at Henry Senachwine High School Saturday night or Sunday morning. A pellet gun was used and shots likely came from Route 29. Superintendent John LaVelle found the damage and notified Police Chief Ralph Childs.

Icy Pavement Cited After Granville Crash

Two cars damaged in a 10:45 a.m. Friday collision at the McCoy Street Hopkins Avenue intersection Granville. Roger L Holmes of Box 56 Hennepin left onto Hopkins hitting Bernice Benges of 433 Park Ave Ottawa. Damage totals $350 to Holmes vehicle and $300 to Benges car owned by Florence Schafer of Granville. Sheriff Warren Calbow blamed icy pavement.

New Jones and Laughlin Family Move to Henry

The Brandt family from Pennsylvania moves to Henry with Laura 14 James 11 and Robert 7. Laura joins Henry Senoachwine High School basketball while James and Robert enjoy nearby school and country life. They join the local Methodist church and pursue music bowling skating and model building in their new community.

Five Christmas crash victims show improving health

Five ladies injured in a Christmas day auto crash near Varna are reported making satisfactory progress. Mrs Ira Hawksworth and daughter Mrs Zella Divelbiss of Lacon were moved from St Margaret's Spring Valley to Proctor Hospital Peoria. Hawksworth to have hip operation soon. Divelbiss and others in improved condition at St Margaret's Hospital Spring Valley.

Injured millwright at J&L plant in Hennepin

John Taylor Schmitt, a millwright in J&L Jones and Laughtin Steel’s maintenance department, was injured at the pickle line in the Hennepin plant Saturday morning. He fell, sustaining head lacerations, and was taken to Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton where his condition was listed as satisfactory.

Henry News Society Editor Injured In Crash

Mrs. Lloyd Hunter society editor for the Henry News Republican was in a March ice accident at Market and Williams Streets in Henry. She received five stitches for a forehead cut. the car suffered substantial damage but she escaped serious injury.

Christmas Puppy Swap Brings Joy to Johnson Children

Jim and Dorothy Johnson of 906 Williams Street hoped for a purebred English Pointer for Christmas for Terri Jo and Mark. Penny, a white with brown ears pup, vanished after a porch trust, leading to a lost pet ad. Santa delivered a second pup, a terrier beagle mix named Susie, to comfort the children while Penny remains missing.
