The new fill on Henry dike completed ahead of schedule and the one way road across the river bridge was opened to all traffic. Residents and traders rejoice as the route previously closed since late November now allows passage despite prior delays and settlement issues.
A six month old baby Raymond Leonard Capello of Jas Capello and wife died after accidental ingestion of Lysol mixed with cough medicine. The incident occurred Christmas morning as parents realized the error and attempted to help. Services were held at the Capello home with burial at Trinity Lutheran cemetery.
Henry Artificial Ice company plans to replace electric motors with a distillate oil burning engine. The new system aims to cut costs and will be installed in the ice plant. A 10,000 gallon fuel oil tank will be buried on the adjacent lot.
A baby boy arrived Wednesday for Mr and Mrs Ben Forrest at the city hospital the first child for the couple both mother and son are reported doing well A baby girl was born Tuesday to Mr and Mrs John Jurguson of Bradford at the city hospital with mother and daughter listed as recovering nicely A baby girl born January 30 measured fourteen pounds at birth and both mother and child are reported doing well at the hospital
Fire originating in an unknown manner destroyed a box car of ties last Wednesday in the Sparland yards of the Rock Island railroad. Lacon fire fighters responded after noon and found the northbound passenger train delayed, while the engineer attempted to check the blaze. A carload of coal was at risk until train crews moved it to safety.
Mrs. Henry Lakemper of La Rose delivered a stillborn infant at Streator hospital on Thursday afternoon nine hours after arrival. The baby was laid to rest in St. Ann's cemetery in Toluca on Friday. Mrs. Lakemper recovers at home and their daughter Mary was cared for by neighbor Mrs. Frank Meredith during the hospital stay.
A marriage license was issued by County Clerk Coford on Monday morning to George Moreland of Lacon and Margaret Murphy of Lacon. They were married by Justice of the Peace John Pletsch of Granville.
The Marshall Putnam Fair will run September 15 to 18 this year aligning with the State Fair week. County breeders expect stronger livestock entries and greater prize money opportunities. Attending the Peoria arrival meeting were Elmér Quinn president and other fair officials from Henry, Putnam, La Salle, and surrounding areas.
John Travis of McNabb died after an apoplexy attack struck him at work. He passed after being taken home and a summoned doctor could not revive him. Born May 5, 1864 in Lucas Ohio, he lived most of his life in Magnolia Township and Covina California. He married Emma McPhern in 1884 and leaves three children, Rose, Leonard, and Jancatharia, plus grandchildren and numerous relatives. He was a member of local churches and fraternal orders. memorial services were held at the Methodist church in MtNabb with Rev. Archer and Rev. McVey officiating.
A district basketball tournament for Marshall Putnam and Stark counties is staged in Lacon today February 5 and tomorrow February 6 in the assembly hall of Lacon Community High School.
Henry Kiwanians heard from George Shurtleff of Peoria past governor of the Illinois Eastern Iowa district about Kiwanis. The Lyceum entertainers performed brief musical numbers as the meeting last Thursday evening planned a dairy discussion led by F. E. Fuller.
Mr and Mrs Enos Odelei observed their 30th wedding anniversary with a surprise party hosted by Ralph Brown William Ransom and W J Jesse of Varna. Five tables entertained about 500 guests with prizes for high scores awarded to Mrs Henry Baker and Enos Odell. Out of town visitors included Mr and Mrs O M Hurl and Mr and Mrs Joseph Bell of Varna and Mr and Mrs J C Duncan of Oglesby.
William Knight received word that his daughter in law Margaret Phillips Knight wife of Fred Knight died at her Ottawa home after a several weeks illness. The family planned travel to Ottawa and a complete obituary will be published next week.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Smith of Florid died January 31 1925 after a brief illness from pneumonia. He was born November 6 1924 and buried in Florid. his short life brought deep sorrow to his parents.
Drawings announced for a February 12 basketball tournament in Chillicothe featuring Henry Lacon Sparland and Chillicothe with first and second teams. Marshall County events follow February 20 in Varna with six lightweights and additional heavyweights. La Rose not competing in lightweights. La Rose added in heavies.
Francis Quinn and his wife, while en route to this city last week, witnessed a sedan overturn on the hard road just ahead. They swerved to avoid it and helped extract three ladies a child and a man. The occupants were later brought to the city with bystander aid.
Vernon Ness an eighteen month old boy from Cottage was badly burned on the arm when he pressed a celluloid knitting needle into a stove causing flames to erupt. His parents Mr and Mrs Elmer Ness rushed to aid him as neighbors assisted with first aid. The accident highlights dangers of celluloid materials near open flames.
Putnam county men met Tuesday afternoon to discuss hard roads. Judge Taylor presided and outlined the meeting goals. A delegation will seek the governor and department support with Senator Lantz invited. routes 89 and 69A would connect Dixon to Metamora and Granville to the Meridian Trail.
The Henry Merchants defeated Washington 73 to 18 on February 10 as all players contributed on both ends. Albro of Washington was held in check while Henry led from the start, opening 11–0 and finishing 73–18, with strong defense and balanced scoring from Maple Campbell Steele Reininger Collins and others.
A community Farm Bureau gathering at William Riddell home in Spartai attracted about 60 attendees. WE Grimes of Chicago spoke on live stock marketing and Miss Maxwell addressed the women. A noon cafeteria lunch was served. Another meeting occurred in Whitefield town hall with Miss Scott confirming an informative talk. Mr Fuller discussed seed stock and farming. Professor Féley of Toluca demonstrated rope splicing. The sessions were well attended and viewed as beneficial.
Robert E. Sloan a special Averyville policeman was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to a term of one year to life. Sloan stopped Walter C. Smith and his companion as they returned from Peoria last August. Smith, ununiformed, believed Sloan a holdup man and was shot and killed. Sloan's trial began last Wednesday and ended Saturday.
August Lith of Putnam County died at age 52 years 11 months and 25 days after a carbuncle. Born in Sweden he came to the United States at age ten with his mother and lived 42 years in Putnam County. He married Ida Carlson February 17 1898 and left two children Minnie Johnson and Nora Lith. He survived by four sisters and two granddaughters and funeral services were held at Ti nam Federated Church with Rev W H Witter officiating. burial in Senachwine cemetery.
A Peoria waterway meeting of eighteen Illinois River Valley counties adopts a resolution opposing federal water diversion from Lake Michigan until a secretary of water report is issued. It endorses War Secretary Weeks, backs dam removal, water diversion under war control, compensation to Chicago Sanitary District, and cooperation with future legislation to meet navigational needs.
The Young Ladies Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary held a 500 card party at the K of C rooms with twenty three tables. Prizes went to Mrs Pauline Gresser high ladies and Mr John Merdian high men. light lunch served. A separate note mentions a bride to be shower at Mrs Thomas Murphy’s Camp Grove home with needlework games gifts on a wagon, and a hospital matron Miss Letitia Wallister receiving word about her father Frank Kallis’ illness and service.
A family gathering marks Edmond Harney turning 99, with relatives and friends joining him at his home. Born in Ireland, he arrived in 1849 aboard the Prairie City and later built a farm through seven decades of life in Saratoga and nearby areas.
The McNabb Cardinals defeated Lostant 37 to 24 in a midweek game at Lostant. Speer provided the stronger challenge, scoring 27 for the visitors while Neath and Fonte each contributed solid play.
La Rose parents Mr. and Mrs. James Capello mourn the loss of their six month old son Raymond Leonard after a severe cold. A cough medicine was given by mistake while Lysol, stored nearby, was ingested during a Christmas spell. Despite efforts, the child died Friday morning with funeral services held at the Capello home and burial in Trinity Lutheran cemetery in La Rose.
