Henry Sends Christmas Gifts to Soldiers in Service
Community auxiliary organized to mail boxes and money gifts to Henry area service members. Thirty seven gifts and one hundred sixty seven dollars sent to soldiers in the States. some gifts went as money. Names and addresses kept in a Leon Thompson home file for up to date records. Volunteers include Mrs B Q and Mrs J R Hurd with Mrs Ed Herry and Mrs Leon Thompson assisting.

Dirty men will leave their respec tories in Marshall County on 5, 1943 for Peoria where they undergo new physicals before entering the army. The 30 men in the law were determined by the county board at a special meeting. The draft will return home for 8 days before heading to Unkney Arc center at Scott Field.

Girls Win Stamp Sale Contest At Henry High
The Home Economics Club sponsored a defense stamp sale contest. Girls and boys competed, with girls raising 106.90 and boys 89.65. Some students bought stamps equaling an 18.75 bond. two girls worked before school, two at noon, and two after. The weeklong sale ended with total proceeds of 3196.55.

U S O Fund Drive Exceeds Goal in Putnam County
A final report by Charles Whitney of McNabb shows the Putnam County USO raised 677.37 to exceed its $200 quota. Township chairmen included Rci Gennane Sandee Town ship John5onges Hennepin Mrs. Lloyd Wheeler Senachwine and E H Daubs Magnolia. Granville Senachwine Magnolia townships posted strong results with additional donations from Frank Nader and H B Anderson. Balance on hand is 368.65 for future campaigns.

Oil drilling activity north of McNabb advances despite past failures
Two Kansas operators moved equipment onto the Virginia Wolf farm north of McNabb to drill a test well. They have reached about a hundred feet and plan round-the-clock shifts after Christmas, aiming to prove oil in the McNabb area amid long standing hopes and existing leases held by local farmers and others.

J H Aukland of Wenona led the Chicago Stock Yards opening week with a shipment of 1 195 pound Aberdeens Angus steers selling for 16 85 per cwt. The lot included 21 Angus yearlings bought at Henry from the late J T Dauber. Aukland plans a public closing out sale January 6 and retirement. Hog prices reached 14 85 per cwt with Tuesday’s high the strongest since November.

Two more community youths arrived at the army reception at Scott Field Bellville for induction. Charles Hoffman son of Mr and Mrs Leo Hoffman resident west of Henry previously worked as a military explosives operator at Elwood Ordnance Joliet for DuPont Company. Charles graduated Henry High School noted as athlete and popular student. George Raymond Kelly formerly an order filler for Caterpillar Tractor Company Peoria prior to instruction. George married and his wife Mrs Josephine Kelly resides at 100 Bigelow Peoria.

Harrison Boys Both Serve In Florida Armed Forces
The Harrison brothers Donald and Leslie, sons of Mervin Harrison of Putnam, are both serving in Florida. Leslie, an ensign in the navy, aids hangar construction for naval aircraft at DeLand and the Pensacola area, including an $800,000 base south of Jacksonville. Donald, a staff sergeant, works in the army finance office at Camp Blanding and helps train others. They expect at least three more months of service. Mr and Mrs Joe Haun welcomed an eight and a half pound daughter born at 12 45 pm Tuesday to a relative's home. Ivan Lindstrom of Magnolia moved to the Charles Pierson farm at Putnam.

Mary Quinn Dies At Home In Henry Township
Mary Quinn aged years died at her home in Henry Township on December 23 after a yearlong illness. Born November 19 18__, she was one of seven children of James and Barbara Wood Quitin. She moved from Saratoga to Sale County in 1875 and resided with her brother Elmer in Henry. A longtime member and treasurer of the Order of the Eastern Star she also cared for nieces and nephews. Surviving are sisters Edith Gregory of Fort Collins Colorado and Lillie Gregory of Jefferson Town and brothers Edmund and Elmer of Henry. Services at Henry Methodist Church Saturday at 2 pm conducted by Rev. Walter Ward and Rev. W F Powell with interment in Henry City Cemetery. Family will receive calls at Elmer’s residence prior to services.

Henry Post Office Marks Record Christmas Mail Volume
Henry post office reports its December mail handled and postal receipts set to break records. The stamp cancellation machine processed about 40 000 pieces of mail since it began, with nearly 8000 pieces on the peak day Tuesday December 22. Postmaster Lee Wright notes no one in the Henry area was forgotten this Christmas season as greetings and mail surged. Figures for the full year are expected to set a Henry record when released by the News-Republican.

Memorial services for Bonnie Lee DeWalt at Henry Methodist
Memorial services were held at two oclock in Henry Methodist Church for Bonnie Lee DeWalt youngest of nine children who died at six months old after whooping cough and pneumonia. Rev Powell officiated with Mrs Pagemiller and Mrs Downey singing, and organ accompaniment by Mrs Bourdettee. Interment followed at Henry-Guy Cemetery. The infant, born June 11 1942, had been ill three weeks. Survivors include her parents and relatives from Sparland and nearby towns who attended.

Funeral Services Held for Arthur Swartz
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon for Arthur Swartz 76 a lifelong Evans Township farmer who lived on a country farm between Magnolia and Wenona. The Rev Dickergon of Venona Methodist Church conducted the service and burial was in Henry City Cemetery beside his wife. Interment was by Lindbloom funeral service of Hena Pall bearers were Wenona men. George Lindgren sang Rock of Ages with his sister Blanche Lindgren accompanying. Survived by sister Miss Sarah Swartz who will be 900 on her next birthday Thursday Jan 21 and by nieces and nephews. He left a brother in law Junius Brown. He was well known in the community.

The Henry Theatre, closed since last Wednesday due to heating system failures from leaks in a new boiler, will reopen after ten days. Parts for the boiler are being shipped from the American Radiator Company plant in Buffalo, and once inland, repairs will be completed and showings resume.

Clara Louise Kenyon nine months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Kenyon of Streator was buried in Henry City Cemetery after services at home of great grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Allen Tuttle. She died from bronchial pneumonia Saturday night born March 4 1942 at St Marys Hospital Streator. Funeral services were at Wagner Funeral Home Streator then Henry. Rev. W F Powell led the service with Mrs G H Downey and Mrs C O Pagemiller singing When He Cometh.
