Henry city council set Class A on premise liquor licenses at 250 and Class B bottle sales at 100. The council limited licenses to five under a population based ratio and planned an ordinance with city attorney for a special session.
Clema Frances Fogerty infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Clement Fogerty of this city died Monday December 4 at 9 am age five weeks born October 30 she passed to her Maker Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm with Rev Fr D K Harrington officiating burial at Lone Tree cemetery under the direction of R O Green Relatives from a distance attended from Streator Eldred Kewanee and nearby towns
Miss Catherine Poling, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Poling, and Joseph Frain, son of Mr and Mrs Luke Frain of Tovey Illinois, were united in marriage at Lacoti at 10 oclock Saturday morning. Later they left for Tovey to make their home. The groom works in the Tovey shafts as a coal miner.
Edwards street is again decorated with strings of colored lights this season. Frank Potter installed the lights under an agreement made Monday night with the city council, continuing the customary annual display.
Children may send letters to Santa Claus care of the Henry News Republic an Henry Illinois. Each letter must be signed and under 100 words. The paper will print as many as space allows and forward them to Saint Nick at the North Pole Toy Warehouse.
Farm advisers from 77 Illinois counties met with Director Walter W. McLaughlin to discuss interim federal loans of 45 cents per bushel on stored corn. Governor Horner activates the 1927 grain warehouse act to back loans with warehouse certificates, with the Commodity Loan Corporation funding the program and banks advancing notes due August 1934.
On Saturday December 9 the Swaney wrestling team hosts Gibson City in Swaney gym. Both schools are in their second year with two champions from last year on Gibson City side. Lineup includes Quinney, Griffin, Peterson, Bumgarner, Renner, Allen, Funk, Pletsch and Smith. Russell Lamoreau coaches Gibson City with H E Kenney refereeing.
The Henry girls opened their season with a 30 to 22 victory over Ogles on a Saturday night at the new scarlet and black uniforms funded by local businessmen. Waughop led with 14 points, Applegate 8, Keenan 7, Williams 1. Upcoming games feature Danville Illinois on December 9 and Ke Swanee’s Beauty five on December 12 at 8:15 p.m.
Mr. and Mrs. Ora Harlin of Chilli Cothe announce the birth of a daughter on December 3. The baby girl weighed seven pounds and has been named Janice Mae. The parents are well known in the vicinity.
Marshall county board of supervisors met in regular quarterly session at the Lacon courthouse with all members present. They designated a route as a county aid road, reported 26 coal mines employing 94 workers, and confirmed civil works projects in Whitefield and Saratoga townships. Mrs Brundage from civil works and the Illinois emergency relief commission outlined fund distribution as flour and pork shipments for relief are prepared for distribution via emergency relief.
Jurors selected for the January term to serve on the petit jury at the circuit court session to open the first Monday in January 1934 in Lacon. Listed jurors include Lacon local coats, Bennington, Saratoga, Steuben, Whitefield, Hopewell, Richland and other townships, with numerous named individuals.
Henry chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star elects officers for 1934 with Rebecca Wheeler as worthy matron and Joseph Benefiel as worthy patron. Christmas party set for Monday December 18 invites members and families to bring sandwiches or cookies and a 10 cent gift for each child.
State Senator Simon E. Lantz of Congerville, representing the 16th district, has been absent from the Capitol for days and is hospitalized in Peoria after an emergency operation. He is recovering but the length of his stay is uncertain, hindering the minority in opposing Gov. Horner's measures.
Santa Claus will again visit Henry this year to help children with gifts and a free movie at the Henry theatre on December 16. A second community Christmas tree event on December 23 offers a cash prize and many gifts for participants who buy holiday goods from cooperating Henry merchants. Tickets from stores serve as admission.
Mrs Albert True 79 died December 2 1933 at Henry Illinois after long life in Bureau and Henry areas. She married Albert True September 11 1873 and celebrated 60th anniversary this year. Funeral Monday from Henry M E Church with Rev J A Johnson officiating.
Albert Lynch of Granville who dug out of Standard village jail after finding an axe and shovels was fined 100 dollars and costs at a hearing before Judge Frank Ellena in Standard. Lynch was jailed after a Saturday night fight at a Standard dance hall and later found at his Granville home.
The Wyoming Alumni basketball team narrowly defeated Lacona Woolen Mills 28 to 27 on its home floor. Meeske led Wyoming while Strong and Newell starred for Lacona.
Edward Gould a Missouri School of Mines student spent the weekend with his sister and Mr and Mrs J E Raffensperger and their family in Rollo Missouri.
Fred H Copple 51 died November 26 1938 at home with parents in Indiana after a life spanning New Washington born June 26 1882. He married Anna Dailey April 9 1910 and leaves widow three children Helen Charles Elbert sister and three brothers. Funeral at Wyoming church with Rev Reeves and songs by Mrs Floyd Turner and Willis Reinbeck. burial at Saratoga cemetery.
At the council meeting three men William Rickey Clifford Mercian and Mike Schwiderski were assigned to steady eight hour shifts on the river ferry. The plan allows removal of one worker at the end of December if income falls short but officials expect sufficient revenue to cover the extra cost.
Grace McDonnell age 33 wife of Anton McDonnell of Edelstein died Tuesday night at Henry Hospital. Survived by husband three children Endsley John Betty Jane two sisters Lucille Graney Eva McDonald of Peoria two brothers William Green Los Angeles and John Green Phoenix. Funeral at St Marys of the Woods Princeville 9 30 am Thursday with burial in St Marys cemetery Princeville.
Hanna Hillabrand, 95, longtime Tonica resident, died at home Sunday after ill health worsened from a fall that fractured her arm. Born near Oxbow in 1838, she married Simeon Hillabrand and later farmed in Tonica. Survived by a brother Frank Funk and several nephews and nieces. husband and sister Catherine Kays preceded her. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 pm at her home with burial in Fairview cemetery.
Mrs Kennis Cendita who underwent a serious operation at Henry Hospital is recovering well and returning to her mother's home Wednesday afternoon.
Adam Halbleib pioneer resident of Magnolia township died at home Sunday December 8 after several weeks illness including pneumonia. He was 75 years 2 months 2 days. Funeral Tuesday at 1 pm at Henry Methodist Church with Rev J A Johnson officiating. Interment Henry City cemetery. He was married 1885 to Eunice V Castle and had ten children eight living Harry Ernest Franklin Albert Wayne Mrs Hicks Mrs Shider Mrs Wheeler. Survived by sister Mrs Clara Wright and brother Casper Halbleib. He farmed all life and lived a simple, respected life in Henry area.
Miss Margaret Campbell longtime resident of Henry and Putnam dies at 91 after a three week illness from a fall on November 18. Funeral services are today at 2:30 pm from her late residence with Rev. W. Carpenter of Kewanee officiating. Burial in Putnam Cemetery. Survived by sister Mrs. S May Stickel. Born June 21 1842 in Wayne County Illinois.
Miss Emma Pioli daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph Pioli and Emil Capitani of Hennepin were married Sunday at 430 pm at the bride parents home in Oglesby. Justice of the Peace John McCann performed the ring ceremony. Miss Ann Cardani a friend of the bride was bridesmaid and Peter Pioli brother of the bride was best man. After a short honeymoon they will reside on a farm in Hennepin.
Hopkins high school basketball team snapped a rough road trip with a 42 to 13 win over Swaney at Granville. Guglimetti led the scoring with 19 points on six field goals and seven free throws. The Hopkins seconds also defeated Swaney 0 to 12 in the preliminary.
Dr. C. E. Smart of Granville has been appointed federal loan examiner for Putnam County by the appropriate agency.
