Council and Mayor Tackle Wide City Problems

Henry city council met in an extended session to discuss sewer plans, finances, and leases. Transfers from sales tax and water funds were approved, and the six month lease on city property extended. The panel debated public toilet misuse, park water and sprinkling needs, and police staffing for Sundays. The sewer project faces funding uncertainty with federal denial and local referendum questions ahead.

Tractor Pull Set For Thursday At Marshall Putnam Fair

Jim Read of Putnam will compete in the tractor pulling contest at the Marshall Putnam fairgrounds Thursday night Aug 30. Arvid Magnuson superintendent directs a limited contest for Marshall and nearby counties. Event starts at 7 30 p m at the grandstand.

Last Rites Thursday For Mrs. Siewers

Stelmie Siewers 80 wife of Frank Siewers of this city died unexpectedly at home in Henry. Services set at St Marys church at 9 30 a m on Thursday with Rev Laurence Schmacher officiating. Visitation for Mrs Etta at Ries Mortuary today 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p m with Rosary at 8 p m. Complete obituary to be published next week.

Weather Report: Henry Area Sees Two Thunder Showers

The Henry area received two welcome thundershowers last week bringing much needed moisture to parched gardens and lawns. Rain varied by location with downtown Henry wetter than the west side, and east and west banks of the river reporting more rain than the business district. Farmers in De Hopewell Township noted Magnolia-ward rainfall Friday night while Henry had three tenths of an inch Thursday and seven tenths on Friday. Lacon had only a Thursday sprinkle but Friday produced a good deluge.

Next Week’s Paper Delayed By Labor Day Holiday

Due to Labor Day on Monday September 3 the News Republic will publish Thursday afternoon September 6 instead of the usual Wednesday schedule. Contributors advertisers and correspondents should submit early for inclusion in the Sept 6 issue. The normal Wednesday schedule resumes for the Sept 12 edition.

Henry Rotary Club outlines free enterprise value

Henry Rotary Club heard Avrs Beard president of Mid-State College Toledo argue that living in a free economy is America’s greatest advantage. He warned government competition with private enterprise risks freedom and cited a survey showing many citizens lack knowledge of free enterprise. Beard said success depends on imagination risk taking and service with money as a by product of contributing to society.

Printing firm eyes Marshall county site for new plant

A Chicago area printing firm with 50 years of success is considering a Marshall county location in the Illinois River Valley near Henry and Lacon Sparland. The Matsuaill County Resource Development committee promotes the site with rail and highway access and utilities. The plan includes 20 acres minimum, a modern facility, training program, and phased employment from 21 to 50 workers over three years. Local residents are urged to register for employment and supportive officials assist in site development.
