Farmers in Putnam and surrounding counties faced severe heat and drought in 1936 1937 affecting corn yields. Reports note wide variance with some fields damaged, others withstanding heat, and adoption of new moisture conserving methods. Observers describe partial crop failures but optimism for improved soil moisture conditions with recent rains and hay and oats prospects.
A fragmentary clipping recounts a Maine traveler Mrs Clifford Haws and family journeying from Maine to Detroit and Vermont before arriving August 4. The note mentions seas, weather, and a seaside mood, with scattered references to lobster and mackerel and impressions of the ocean and scenery along the route.
Final rites were held for Charles Clausen 17 at McNabb Methodist Church. He died Saturday at Graham Hospital Canton from a diving accident while lifeguarding at Lewistown camp. He was active in church work, scouts, and school, earning Eagle Scout honors and serving as class president. Interment followed at Friends Cemetery McNabb.
A public discussion on consolidating Putnam County schools continues with a proposed unit school district for three east side townships. A single high school and multiple grade schools are envisioned, but support is mixed and local groups push for two high schools or partial consolidations. A September Granville Hopkins meeting will review recommendations from the county school survey group as officials weigh regional interests and state requirements.
Hart Henry Hattison 87 of Pioneer Henry is in critical condition at Perry Memorial Hospital Princeton after a collision with Stormy Turpen’s Pontiac on a Henry road near the city cemetery. He suffered several fractured ribs a punctured lung and multiple cuts and bruises and is considered precarious due to age. Both cars were brought to Klein’s garage where emergency care was given en route to the hospital.
The St Marys Parochial School begins Tuesday September 2 with mass at 9 o clock and classes at 9 45. Sister M Clementine O S F replaces Sister M Joan as Superior and upper grade teacher for grades six to eight. Sister M Therese O S F leads grades three to five and teaches music and junior choir, with Sister M Coletta O S F teaching grades one and two.
Pour Footings Bert Hoppler Henry contractor pours the footings this week for a new Kroger super service store in Henry, beside Watercott department store on Edward Street. The north wall of concrete blocks is being laid now as a crew of workers aims to complete the building at an early date.
Graveside rites were held in Tiskilwa for Mark Kenney 68 a brother of Mrs Charles Pettegrew of Tiskilwa He was a former Tiskilwa boy and worked in the railroad park for 30 years He wed at Blue Island during that time and had been ill for two years Funeral services were held Tuesday at Blue Island The Rev A W Littrell of the Tiskilwa Baptist Church led the service He is survived by his wife and a sister His parents and one sister preceded him in death
John F Boose owner of the Lindbloom Funeral Chapel is named Henry elty chairman of the finance drive for Exposition Gardens. He will announce plans soon for promotion in the local territory with Arthur OBrien chairing the drive in Henry Township. A movie short will be shown at the Henry Theatre to supplement publicity.
The Marshall County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday September 9 at the courthouse in LaCon. All persons with claims against the county are urged to file them well in advance. Wayland Downey County Clerk Marshall County Advt. 13 21
Leslie Gustafson will operate the Wenona farm east of Wenona formerly run by the Carr brothers since 1941. The Carrs have moved to a new farm on the Hennepin road after a successful period with purebred livestock including Hampshire hogs. Rev Park, based in Peoria, controls multiple farms and reported producing over a million pounds of meat across his holdings during the war.
The Henry troop of Boy Scouts collected a small sum of $7.50 last Thursday afternoon, reported by secretary treasurer John Martin. Scoutmaster John Moline said the drive was not a big success and plans a fall paper drive, thanking donators for their contributions.
Postmaster F. L. Wright announced on Wednesday that there will be no window service, rural delivery, or city delivery on Labor Day observance as the holiday closes all postal operations.
Regular monthly Henry Fire Department meeting set for city hall at 7 30 pm Friday August 29. Members will discuss department affairs and upcoming safety initiatives.
Scott Swain of McNabb and his family plan to leave Friday for Oakland California to establish their home for an indefinite period. Warren Lucas of McNabb also moves this week with his produce business and family to Varna to continue serving the same territory.
Elizabeth Ann Duffield daughter of David B and Mary Ann Kline Duffield was born June 80 1866 at Canton Illinois and died August 19 1947 at Rest Haven Wenlond NL at age 92 years one month and 19 days. She married Lewis V Smith November 22 1878 near Fairbury Illinois later moving to Henry. She was a charter member of Henry Christian Church and is survived by two children Taylor Smith and Mrs Pearl Loomis of Henry and several grandchildren great grandchildren and nephews. Funeral services were held at Green Funeral Home with Rev Gaylord Mulins officiating and many attended the service and burial at Henry City Cemetery.
Varna Township High School will open on Tuesday September 2 at 8 30 a m Day light Saving Time The faculty includes Leroy R Peterson principal and math physics Donald Van Ormer coach science social science and boys physical education John E Shields vocational agriculture Katherine Ruppel commerce girls physical education Virginia Skaggs vocational homemaking Mrs Mezzie Masters English and Latin Earl Meeker band The building has been refreshed by custodians Mr and Mrs Jalmer Hultgren Nearly sixty students are expected to enroll in the high school For the first time buses will operate with routes and time schedules provided to parents Four new buses will be in service one owned by the high school district and three by Varna Consolidated Grade School Bus drivers are Fayne Umphress Clifford Jenkins Edward Welch and Warren Lucas Grade school expects about 140 pupils to enroll.
Russell Mathis son of Mr and Mrs George Mathis of McNabb completed credits at Illinois Wesleyan College of Music earning a Bachelor of Music degree with a double major in piano and voice. He held many college roles including student council freshman and sophomore terms, Argus staff, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia president, and Blue Key member. He directed music in Ipava and will be a theater and band director at Wyoming for the coming year.
In Magnolia and adjacent rural areas residents approved establishing a Magnolia fire district on August 26. Village votes favored the proposition while Arnold School and Union School sites showed strong approval, with a district board to be appointed by the Putnam County judge. The Magnolia village board led by Mayor Lloyd Billups and members Conrad Bickerman Larry Myers Denton Strode James Bickerman and George Martin spearheaded the effort.
The Exposition Gardens finance drive kicks off in Henry to fund a $1.5 million entertainment and recreation center at the northwest edge of Peoria. Rev Alvin Park of Bartonville leads speakers including Lester Leigh and county farm bureau leaders as campaigns plan to sell 100000 coupon books at $10 each, with $600000 from Peoria industry aiding purchases.
