The electorate backed a citywide road resurfacing program using gas tax funds with bonds to be sold after canvassing. Mayor L F Klein and the council approved the plan, while engineers outline that completion is slated for next summer, promising wider, weather resistant streets and boosted property values in Henry.
A Hen-Republican reporter questioned Guy K. Child city clerk of Henry about rumors he would run for county clerk of Marshall County as a Republican. Child declined to commit, saying he is not yet into the matter and time will tell. The scene at the Duke Brothers store shows he was busy with a sale when asked.
County clerk Herb Roth reports about two hundred business firms registered in Marshall County under a state law requiring DBAs. The original August 16 deadline was extended due to heavy registration and short notice. More registrations are expected. the clerk notes firms using all trade names besides the owner’s.
George Brady city patrolman chasing driver Charles Morgan on Route 18 in Henry Saturday evening. Brady swerved to avoid a head on and his Hudson side collided with Chuck Schubert’s 1935 Ford. Schubert sustained minor damages and drove away. Morgan stopped back at the scene and Brady issued a speeding ticket.
The Magnolia depot from the Rutland Toluca and Northern railroad is being moved to the Sam Maupin farm near Henry to serve as part of a new residence. After service ended, the property was sold off, and lumber from the depot was purchased by Harry Hutton. Maupin, with Everett Moore, is rebuilding on a farm previously acquired from Henry Bell, integrating the depot lumber into the new house.
Turner and Son of Henry hauled about 40 head of cattle from the Forrest Kocher farm near Henry to Chicago last night using three large trailers. The cattle were in prime condition and brought a top price. Harold Elliott of Tiskilwa, Bureau County treasurer, announced his candidacy for Bureau County sheriff in the Republican primary next spring, the first candidate in the field.
Ten men shown assisted in laying a new cement floor in the art hall at the Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds last week. Ike Davis of Toluca, former Marshall County sheriff, led the crew as contractor. The 62 by 50 foot hall now has a durable floor replacing the old sawdust surface.
Effective Wednesday August 27, Rock Island Line patrons gain bus service between Bureau and Peoria via Putnam Henry and Sparland. Three daily round trips replace two, stopping at Henry Rock Island station. Fares unchanged. Mail moves by Rock Island truck four times daily, two on Sundays, holidays no truck. Other trains unaffected.
The Hub Ballroom at Edelatesn hosts Joe Sanders known as The Obdst-Hander and his band this Sunday night, Aug 31. The show features singing stars Blanche LaBow and Red Hodgson, author of The Music Goes Round and Round. Advanced tickets are at Mercian's Drug Store. Henry grocery stores will close all day Monday, Sept 2 in observance of Labor Day.
Gladys Sivell of Henry was elected general county chairman as the Marshall County Red Cross expands for the national defense program. J T Hancock of Lacon will serve as treasurer, with Mrs Ed Monser of Venona as county production chair and regional unit leaders named in Varna Sparland Toluca La Con Dow Kas.
The Soil Conservation Service of the Henry CCG Camp will again display a conservation exhibit at the Bureau County Fair in Princeton. Harold Doubet, agronomist of the Henry camp, will oversee the exhibit in the Bureau County Farm Bureau building. A similar exhibit is planned for the Marshall Putnam Fair in Henry the following week.
Burl Hiltabrand, longtime Lostant area farmer, plans to relocate next year to Hopewell Township. He will farm 320 acres owned by Ben Meyers of Varna and reside in the Cinnamon family home.
Mrs Adolph Kuhne has joined the paper as a new correspondent for West McNabb, where she resides, contributing regular items from the community this week.
The appointment of a State highway policeman for Marshall remains unresolved after months of campaigning by candidates. County Republican officials endorsed a popular Henry resident for the post, a move that has drawn attention from the county committee, the senator, and two district Republicans as other candidates seek endorsements from state leaders.
The Philip Morris youth known as Johnny visited Hubert's Bakery in Hen, meeting proprietors Misses Mabel and Florence Hubert. Kirkman, Philip Morris sales manager, arranged the visit to Peoria for a broadcast. The shoppers praised Johnny for his fine bearing and curiosity about the bakery, and he offered each sister a package of cigarettes.
Gamble Store features a stage coach seat by C A Pratt of Henry dating to Pony Express era, hand-tooled leather trunk with secret compartment, duck decoys, brass shell cases owned by Herb Hall, and other antiques. Henry residents Clarence Tuttle and Bill Hoff offer a rolling ballad player, a muzzle-loading shotgun, powder horn, candle snuffer, whale oil lamp, a handmade axe, and an 1855 Colt pistol.
County Clerk Herb Roth announces that Marshall County will soon begin extending next year’s taxes. Last year the county ranked fifth in the state for tax extension, and officials aim to match or improve that record this year.
Miss Juanita Piper of South Pekin visited Mrs J H Kincaid of Milwaukee at the Walter Miller home. Roy Miller’s nephew Herman Lind er of Washington Ill is spending a two week vacation at the Miller home. Miss Matle Carrier and Corporal George Redman visited Alton Ill relatives. Mrs George Zlemer of Peoria spent Wednesday with her mother Mrs G M Brown. Mr and Mrs John Orr joined the Brown family for dinner. Mr and Mrs Charles Barry brought Mr and Mrs George Daniels of Chicago for a Henry vacation week. Barry's party stayed in Peoria with Met and Mrs H J Bickerman.
The 20th annual Marshall Putnam Fair runs Sept 9 through Sept 1 at the Fair Grounds west of Henry. Improvements include amphitheater and arts building upgrades, new concrete floor, tile drains, and better stock washing. Entries pouring in, with five cattle exhibitors already entered and plans for speed and novelty races. The program features daily free amphitheatre acts and The Duke of Paducah on Tuesday night, plus society horse shows midweek. Concessions space nearly sold out.
Reverend C W Baughman of Kewanee resigns from Henry and Putnam Christian Churches and accepts the Knoxville Christian Church pastorate. He will preach first sermon September 14, continues work with A L Freed Memorial Co, and reside in Kewanee. He will also speak September 7 at the First Methodist Church in Canton Illinois.
The Lacon Home Journal published a special edition relaying alleged facts of a brawl between two prominent Marshall County residents. The incident, said to have occurred yesterday afternoon at the McCluskey restaurant in Lacon, stemmed from an argument over Senator Burton K. Wheeler’s visit for Old Settlers Day. No charges have been filed, and the matter may already be closed.
Henry post office windows will be closed all day on Labor Day Monday September 1 and rural mail service will not operate that day.
