In Henry an unusual bet led to a boat and cycle race to Hennepin on Monday night August 23. Sonny won by one minute as Hank senior, racing a motorized cycle, started from the Henry bridge with a 22 horsepower Johnson engine boat following. Sonny covered 14 miles along the Illinois River in 27 minutes, Hank a bike pace of up to 40 mph but with many curves on Route 29, finishing in 28 minutes. Spectators including Mr and Mrs Morse and Mr and Mrs Dietsch traveled to Hennepin to watch.

Ernest Rose and Harold Hart of the Soil Conservation office participated in discussions, as the event, organized with Farm Bureau and extension services, toured the Wier and Kaatz farms southeast of Lacon focusing on livestock, crop rotation, and soil management. A picnic followed at the Kaatz farm. Paul Laffey led the Marshall Putnam tour as farm adviser.

City to honor J P Cromwell with Medal of Honor street name
The widow Margaret Robertaon Cromwell of Palo Alto is to be honored as one of four Medal of Honor winners in a new veterans city planned 27 miles south of Chicago by American Community Builders. Streets will be named for Cromwell and other heroes. Cromwell died aboard a submarine in the South Pacific in 1948. Midshipman John Philip Cromwell Jr. attends the U S Naval Academy at Annapolis as a sophomore.

A light tan coon hound with white breast and feet is at large in Henry. Owned by Kenneth Chance of Henry, the dog named Red has been missing since last May after an event at Bradford. Chance, a sportsman, hopes to recover the animal during a weekend in Henry, and asks sightings to be reported to him.

Mrs Jennie Hale 63 found dead Monday night in her apartment in Tiskilwa. Doctors say she suffered a stroke earlier in the day followed by a hemorrhage and died about six hours before discovery. Surviving are two sons Steven and Roger, five grandchildren, her mother Mrs Mina Watkins and sister Mrs John Long of Falls City Nebraska. Funeral 2:30 p.m. at Tiskilwa Methodist Church, Rev W H Gillis officiating. Burial Mount Bloom Cemetery. Hale was active in Republican circles and headed Bureau County Republican Women’s Club.
