His collection has grown to about 15 300 bulbs from an initial hundred over ten years. bulbs stored in the basement are washed with bichloride of mercury before planting in a 144 by 108 foot plot with weekly plantings ensuring blooms through summer. He imports bulbs from multiple states and grows a rare eight inch pink eglantine bulb, buying at $1 50. He shares blooms with friends and supports local events while belonging to Gladiola societies and plans to expand further after attending the Midwest Gladiola Show.

Funeral services were held for Raymond Cockrill 28 of Streator who died after a collision south of Lincoln. He was burned in the cab of his truck and employed by the Melvin Truck Company of Streator. The Rev. Avery Dickerson officiated at Thierry funeral home Wenona with interment in Wenona cemetery.

Army Freighter Visits Henry Ahead of Gulf Deployment
The Army freighter Dewey and Sons Grain Co boat docked at Henry on Tuesday night en route from Calumet Ship Yards to New Orleans for commissioning. Captain Hamm led the Army Transport Service with First Mate Tom Bingham of Panama City, Fl. The 14 crew members toured the riverfront as local war loan committees eyed the vessel’s features and discussed Marshall Putnam third loan drives. The ship cost about 180000 dollars and is designed for shallow island waters to supply Allied operations.
