Four boys aged 11 to 15 are under arrest, alleged to have cooperated with four adults in burglaries targeting Henry mail routes and depot facilities. Police credit the raid by Chief Garth Reinbeck for breaking the case, with more arrests possible in the coming days.

Henry State's Attorney O. B. Pace Jr reported four Henry youths held in Lacon on burglary charges after a library break in. Warrants for four adults are pending for allegedly transporting the youths. The Thursday morning scene followed a rash of Henry burglaries hitting the library, several businesses, and grain elevators in recent weeks, with eight grain thefts observed once.
Henry State's Attorney O B Pace Jr and Sheriff Zenas Graves met Wednesday afternoon to advance a peaceable inquiry into burglaries in the community.
Magnolia Swaney high school will start Monday August 30 with Principal Leonard Hewitt teaching math and typing. Arnold Maville takes over as coach with degrees in chemical engineering and physical education. Staff includes Mrs Hewitt teaching home economics and girls PE, R W Bunting English and Latin, Fred Stark history biology and English, Clifford Lichta agriculture, and caretaker Donald Hauger. Bus drivers Howard Smith and Robert Martin return. Enrollment expected around 40 at the high school. John Swaney grade school also opens August 30 on daylight saving time with full eight grades, magnolia and McNabb teachers and principals named. hot lunches begin September 7 with cooks Mrs Paxson and Mrs Chestnut.
William Aitchison entered Wesley Memorial hospital last week and underwent surgery Tuesday morning. Aitchison's wife phoned a friend yesterday to report that he had come through the operation satisfactorily and the outlook was favorable.
Christian R. Andersen, 65, longtime Lacon resident, died Aug 23 at St. Francis Hospital Peoria after a stroke. Born Nov 6, 1888 in Datche, Ohio, he moved to Illinois in 1909 and worked on farms in Richland township. He married Myrtle Kunkle in 1926 and was active in Congregational church, Richland Grange, Farm Bureau, and Rotary clubs. Services set for Aug 26 at Lacon Congregational Church. burial in Salem Cemetery.
Attendance at the Rotary Play Day in Lacon exceeded expectations with about 70 percent of Marshall county club members from Lacon Toluca Varna and Henry participating. Guests enjoyed golf croquet and horseshoes before a roast beef dinner directed by Ruby Ely. Leaders included Gerry D Scott as general chairman and club presidents William Koch Stanley Bastion and Ray Hant.
Halsey Monier of Sparland and Francis Boyle scout nearby fairs as Bureau county fair foregoes Tuesday racing due to rain. The Marshall-Putnam dairy show expects 230 entries with a possible 400 to 500 overall. 32 816 in premiums. Local firms and farms sponsor tents and exhibits while gate crews prepare for big attendance and live stock displays led by notable exhibitors Joe Hansen and Edwin Rhonda.
A Henry campaign aims to raise ten thousand dollars for a new Henry public library building by collecting one million pennies. The effort began with a letter to the Chicago Tribune and features a wishing well display in Wiedman’s store where Jim Colligan, a long‑time Henry barber, dropped the first coin. A container at the library desk invites public contributions as the drive proceeds.
Mid County Unit No. 4 will open with half days on Monday Aug 30 and Tuesday Aug 31 to allow pupils to attend the Marshall Putnam fair in Henry county afternoon. Full day starts Wednesday Sept 1 with buses running on last year’s schedules after a bus trial. Parents urged to register students by Friday Aug 29. Lacon students may register Aug 27 at L T Schubert’s office. Varna high and Varna grades register at Fred Eshausen’s office.
Samuel L Bracken of the Marshall-Putnam ASC county office says the county committee is accepting corn at four bin sites across two counties. The government is erecting 315 new bins to hold about 1.5 million bushels stored on farms under loan and purchase plans. Rev A A Pierce visited the ASC office and observed staff working three shifts amid the corn intake.
The Henry Library summer reading program ended August 15 after two months with several hundred books read by grade school children. Winners include Janet Myers, Carol Miller, and Gary Thomas.
Charles Cardosi of Canton takes over Hayline's Cafe in Henry from Mrs. Della Hayline. He pitched in the Pony League for the Olean Giants farm team in New York last summer, posting three wins and one loss before a release. Cardosi, married with one child, will manage the cafe while his father splits time between Henry and Canton and a Silvis venture.
Six Henry Girl Scouts Jeanette Carrier Pat Morgan Beverly Stinson Janice Hurt Carole Rickey and Susan Nichols completed the requirements for their swimming badges in a morning session at the Henry pool. Lifeguard Marshall Stoner conducted the class.
The Marshall Putnam Fair opens Tuesday August 31 and runs through Friday September 3 at the fairgrounds Henry beginning. Six harness horse races are planned Tuesday with a $1575 purse. The program includes Ken Griffin organist, The Great Gwynne, Cow International Illusionist, The Mast Masters, and European novelty acts in the Station Parade. Special for Wednesday is Lacon Day with timepiece tests by Harry L. Shanks Jewelers and a 1200 foot drop test. Friday features the B Ward Roam Auto Daredevil show and the final Western horse shows with 300 to 400 entries expected.
State conservation officials announce Sparland grounds will close to public duck shooting this year. Declining duck numbers last year prompted the shift to a rest area to boost habitat and support broader Illinois valley waterfowl activity. Managers listed are Lawrence Newmibitt of Henry and John Deffenbaugh of Lacon.
Attorney Robert T. Swengel Henry and Stanley Kennedy Tor luca have been named to Marshall County Selective Service Board joining Delmas Petrait Lacon Edward Baker Venona and Mark Allard Henry Louis B. Phillips Varna. Louis B. Phillips recently resigned leaving the chair vacant. Mrs A E Conzelman will replace Miss June Younge or Yonger as clerk after health-related resignation. A special meeting led by Earl J Hipbs will approve new members and elect a chairman.
