Fair program promises high speed daredevil stunts

A Marshall Putnam Fair feature night will showcase B Ward Beams International Congress of Daredevils with a head on crash between two stock cars at 50 mph. The program includes a brick wall crash, the T Bone crash, car jumps, motor cycles, and ten additional thrill acts, all performed at Henry Friday night September 8.

Anton Webber Passes Peoria Heights

Anton Webber aged 70 died at his Peoria Heights home Sunday night. Born April 15 1869 in Woodford County he married Carrie Sluga January 1 1894. He farmed near Whitefield 1906 1915 and is survived by a large family including nine children and two brothers. Funeral at Boland Mortuary and St Thomas Church with burial at St Mary Cemetery.

Dixon Peterson Place In State Horseshoe Meet

Norman Dixon of Streator and Gaylord Peterson of Varna placed in the Illinois State Fair horseshoe event. Dixon took third in Class B, while Peterson ranked high in Class A. Aden Swinehamer of Aurora won the 1939 championship, earning $50, a watch, and a trophy, with James Turner and others placing.

Bailey Theatre Opens in Washington Illinois

The Tazewell Theatre in Washington IL, part of the Bailey chain owned by H A Bailey and son John of Princeton, will open tomorrow evening at 0 oclock. The building has modern decor and fine picture equipment installed. the Baileys also own theatres in Toulon Eureka Minonk and Morrison.

Mrs. Charles Holmes and Mr. Charles Holmes Jr. were honored at a Saturday night celebration for their parents 25th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Wright visits George Wright and family this week. Coleman and others planned trips to Aurora and time with friends were noted.

Proposes New School Annexation Near Magnolia Township

Walter Helper a Magnolia area farmer proposes annexing farm territory east of the Illinois River into the Henry school district. An election would be needed with a majority vote in the area for approval. Helper prefers Henry schools for his children who otherwise face tuition. Magnolia high school district currently extends to the Henry bridge.

Charles Overall to Judge Beauty Contest at Bureau County Fair

Charles Overall to judge a popularity and beauty contest at the Bureau County Fair on Thursday September 31. Twenty five entries represent all townships with contestants including Mary Jean Harrington Kathleen Cherrles and Mary Dorothy McLane. Overall, a Chicago portrait studio photographer, recently did Mayo children portraits in Rochester Minnesota.

State Treasurer to Speak Old Settlers Day at Lacon

Hopes for Governor Henry Warner as Old Settlers Day speaker at Lacon were dashed as health prevented. State Treasurer Louie Lewis of Christopher will fill the engagement. Bridge opening to traffic is expected next Tuesday August 29 with painting planned next month using aluminum paint. Old Settlers and bridge dedication day set for Thursday August 33, and Legion Day events follow.

Roy Aukland Fatally Killed In Paxton Truck Crash

Roy Aukland, 37, longtime Paxton resident, was killed Tuesday morning when his transport truck left the road near Plymouth Indiana and crashed into a tree. He is survived by two daughters, Wilma and Jerry Morris, his mother Mrs Randle, a brother Henry, and sister Mrs. of Paxton. funeral was held in Paxton with relatives including Mr and Mrs Loren J Bryan and Mr and Mrs Phillip Miller noted nearby.

Opening Attraction Of M P Fair September Fifth

The Marshall Putnam Agricultural Conservation Association reports state guidance for steel bins to store Surplus corn for the Commodity Credit Corporation. Steel bins will be erected near weighing and shipping facilities, with first carloads shipped by rail. Cribs hold 2000 bushels, possibly 3000 total across two counties. Farmers buy extra cribs to speed storage for the new crop.

Toluca Real Estate Assessments Rise After City Review

The Marshall County Board of Review reports only 55 complaints this year, the fewest in memory. Toluca residential property assessments were raised by about 3a2 with total increases near $10,000, yielding roughly $400 more in taxes for Toluca homeowners this year. The board adopted a new schedule for four properties and Henry News Republic was listed with the highest county assessment.

Oil troubles blamed on Sinclair during Henry Lions Club talk

Ardmore oil operator George Strawn, guest of the Henry Lions Club, outlined how six Southwest states formed a production cut alliance. He faulted Harry F. Sinclair for crude price cuts, warned Illinois benefits from nearby demand, and predicted the six-state coalition will force a price rebound. New York gasoline prices rose yesterday.
