Mrs. Lawrence Norline appointed clerk of the Putnam County Selective Service board succeeding Delores Barto who resigned. She began duties last week.
The Marshall and Putnam counties fall teachers institute will be held Friday August 31 at Mid County Senior High Varna. County superintendents Glover and Swanson organized the program with registration at 8 30 DST and sessions into the afternoon. Speakers include Paul Street on Ethics for a Democratic Profession Albert Burgard on Present Trends in Today's Classroom and Rev Kenneth M Hope plus Rev Tlove on American ideals and United Nations affairs.
Henry city council approved a contract with Hubbard of Halogen Engineering for 450 to prepare plans and supervise swimming pool improvements funded by bonds. Hubbard will receive 225 on plan approval and 225 at project completion July 1, 1952, with up to five supervision trips at 25 each. The pool closes Sept 3 as work begins.
Henry awaits a new Hens Senachwine high school with air travel for Thomas Plumbing crews from Galesburg to shorten daily commutes seventy miles away. The reinforcing concrete footings are poured and bricklayers are active as workers assemble walls. The company lists workers including Joe men, Harry Talmadge, Donald Ziegler, Rodney Brown, and Aldams.
Graveside services were held Tuesday at 2 pm in Henry for William E. Studyvin. He passed away Sunday at St. Francis. He was born October 24 near Henry and married May Turner years ago. A sister Mrs. of Peoria survives. Service men’s addresses include Athert Cronkrite US Army Ft Leonard Wood, Robert Bogner US Army APO 39 c/o Postmaster New York, Wilhan Hoscheidt US Army Indiantown Gap PA, Wm E Clift AF serial 16357081, Tackland or San Antonio Texas.
Marshall Putnam fair officials last week sealed the art hall to keep sparrows from using it as a private exhibit space. Windows were repaired and plugged, knot holes sealed, doors tightened, and the hall given an aluminum paint over. Interior upgrades include new wood display panels, updated tables, and two new show cases. Clarence Stansell secured the cases from the Neustadt store in LeSalle. The hall now features a cement floor and serves as the headquarters for women’s exhibits and school displays.
Sheriff Zenas Graves held hearings for eight prisoners in county court. Ernest Brewer James Morris Herman Cross Kaye Mosher Faulkner M J Harrison William Wheeler and John Denemark faced larceny and theft charges tied to Henry Sparland Henry and Low Point crimes. Several were sentenced to Vandalia terms while others paid fines. The jail stood empty after the hearings.
North of town an unnamed Henry man known as Bobby was shaken up when his Model A overturned after being struck from behind while turning onto the road near the old Taylor Smith place en route to the Catholic cemetery. His injuries were minor with a taped side and repaired windshield. A Elmwood driver was the other participant and neither vehicle suffered major damage.
Bertram Webber former dean of Illinois organ department will perform the Baldwin organ at Henry Methodist Church during the morning service Sunday Rev Charles Bennett will be back in the pulpit Webber who lives in Madison Wisconsin is a guest in the Cronkrite home over the weekend and is related to Mrs C Cronkrite
Public hearings led by C W Swanson in Marshall County discuss dissolving districts that failed to meet new attendance thresholds. Districts 52 McVicker and 56 Coulter largely join Henry Community Consolidated. Burson 46 to Sparland and Henry. Some areas await final disposition with no residents present. Affected districts must meet 12 to 15 pupil daily averages to remain open.
Zeke Montroy of Centralia Illinois will attend the 30th MP fair marking his long running presence at the event He told Halsey Monier MP fair secretary treasurer he would be in Henry after recently meeting Monier at the Rushville fair Montroy is noted as a world shoe shining champion titleholder from a past New York contest sponsored by Florsheim Shoes
Abhe MP fair management announces a new gate policy to pinch pass tickets presented at entry. Henry Ransom of Henry will supervise ticket takers this year with Bert Sparling of Henry and Don Baughman of Princeton as cashiers. Campbell Tent Company of Alton completed tent erection on the grounds today, with Ernest G. Campbell supervising. the firm has supplied tents here for ten years.
Horses trained at the Marshall Putnam fairgrounds will race at the MP fair next week. Trainer Wilbur Long based in Henry with nine horses on the circuit has horses owned by H J Schmoeger and others. Notable entries include Jett Haven and Seth Parker from Ankabar Farms Washington IL and several county fair circuit winners.
Ben McAllister or Henry will operate the starting gate for the horse race program next week at the Marshall Putnam fair. McAllister, noted for deep knowledge of horse racing, will control the big white car that leads the line and returns after signaling each start. The equipment is owned by Bowen and McGurk and Ted Bowen of Mt Sterling, with McAllister handling the controls during the county fair circuit.
Larry Smith and Billy Greek celebrated birthdays hosted by Mrs. Ralph Smith at the Smith home for Henry Boy Scout troop 74. Forty guests enjoyed hot dogs, cake, and ice cream then played sports after supper.
Officials announce the 30th annual four day fair at Henrys next week with harness racing, horse shows, and bands. over 100 trotters and pacers expected, with $9000 in premiums in speed, and a $50 000 exposition publicity. Weather hopes are high for fair skies as preparations focus on top condition and attractions.
Over 200 entries received by secretary's office led by Virginia Finneagan. Dairy cattle dominate with 48 Brown Swiss and 50 Jerseys while sheep hog and beef cattle departments also project record shows. Judges include RC Gardner from the University of Illinois for dairy cattle Tuesday morning. Other judges: Dale McKee for beef cattle W h Van Meter for hogs Clem Keleher for sheep.
