The board of directors of the Marshall Putnam Fair association meets tonight to finalize the September 8 to 11 expo. The four day program features trotting and pacing races, daily entertainment, and new attractions aimed at drawing record attendance.
RSHALL-PUTNAM 4-H AM WINS AT STATE FAIR Ellis Read and Shirley Morse lead Marshall Putnam team to top place in advanced clothing judging earning 50 dollars and a Chicago expo trip. Opal Hoover and Hattie Urbanik win state clothing class with Franklin county, Crosman from Tazewell county among top scorers in individual clothing judging.
A large state music festival program is set for Friday August 21 at the Illinois State Fair field. About 1500 participants from 20 Illinois counties will perform in a cantata with the University of Illinois sociology department. The event features 75 locals from Marshall and surrounding counties and a prior presentation was staged in Thurday.
National Re-employment service in Marshall county adjusts hours due to staff vacations. The Henry National Building office will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays weekly as a temporary measure. The arrangement awaits longer hours if needed and expresses gratitude to the Marshall County board of supervisors and private supporters for enabling greater service to residents.
Fifty enrollees from the Henry side CCC camp return to Galva to boost total enrollment to about 160. Four crews will work on projects near Galva under four foremen while Henry’s work, including terrace, dam and rock masonry projects, continues under the Galva supervision.
R W Varney chief FHA architect for the district visited Henry last week to inspect the Hunter Lumber model home. He praised the basement work and discussed improvements for the structure while noting the need for affordable homes with easy payments. The basement is completed and the foundation walls and floor near finish, with rapid progress expected. The firm invites Henry residents to watch the construction showcasing new home building ideas.
Harold Morine Jr and James O Connor of Hennepin traveled to Springfield to attend the state fair. They will represent Marshall and Putnam counties in a soil testing demonstration and compete for honors in 4-H club work. Harold entered two Jersey calves for exhibition.
Raymond French 17 of Putnam Illinois, a 4 H club member, won the state health contest with 97.5 percent among 12 000 farm boys, besting Constance Kircher 15 of Griggsville who scored 100 percent Raymond is 5 feet 11 42 inches tall weighs 161 pounds and plans to enroll at the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. He has run the family farm with his father cattle horse and crops and captained the high school softball team for three years.
The sports committee chaired by Ernest Rehn announces a full program for the Farm and Home Bureau picnic at the fairgrounds on August 25. Events include a championship softball game likely Fans vs Whitefield, a tug of war, half mile relays for boys, sprints, high jump, hand calling and chicken calling contests, rolling pin throw, horseshoes, singles and doubles. Winners may represent Marshall Putnam at the state festival if eligible. Speaker Talmage DeFrees of Smithboro will headline, with Warden children’s quartet of Galva performing. Women’s program planned. events start at 9 30 a.m. All are urged to attend.
The Marshall county Old Settler association at Lucon announced Seabourne Bros professional parachute jumpers will perform at the Lucon reunion on Thursday August 27. Robert Seabourne will jump from a plane opening two parachutes on descent. He has made 333 jumps from ships at heights up to 11 000 feet earning national honors. Several thousand spectators are expected to attend. Mayor Floyd Avery and Richard Finfelderd son of Princeton were visitors today.
J W Greene died at his home near Spee on Friday August 14 age 76. He lived in the area except three years in Denver. He married Alma Webber in 1883 and Clara Turnbull in 1932, leaving four children and eleven grandchildren. He was active in the Methodist church and hospital board and honored by Lawn Ridge Masonic lodge for 54 years of membership. Memorial services were held August 16 at La Prairie M E church with several clergymen officiating.
Fire destroyed four buildings on Fred Randall's La Prairie township farm. Two barns a shop and another structure burned as volunteers saved nearby buildings. Neighbors and Chillicothe firefighters rushed a seven mile run to help as furnishings from the house were moved to the yard.
Herb Roth of Lacon, administrator, reports 139 Old Age pension checks issued in Marshall County since July 1 with many applicants still awaiting payment. Most checks were distributed Monday August 17 as officials strive to speed up the process and assist all deserving elderly residents.
Clarence Wood and Harry Cain, residents of Chillicothe, each face one to ten year sentences in Joliet penitentiary for the Edward Shimp corn theft. Shimp, a La Prairie township farmer, reported 150 bushels vanished months ago. Five Chillicotheans were charged. two became state's evidence with probation, three were convicted in Marshall county circuit court with heavy sentences and one placed on probation. They appealed to the Supreme Court. after the appeal period ended, Sheriff W S Osborne arrested the pair at Chillicothe and jailed them to await transfer.
Henry Township High School will open August 31 and Henry Grade School on September 7 as announced by Prof. Roy Steele. New staff include William E. Bennington as industrial arts teacher and coach, Olga Helene Merdian and grids Stowe as teachers, with a full list of junior and senior teachers and assignments. NYA work applications available at Prof. Steele’s home Tuesday at 1 p.m. Applicants must be 16 or older.
The Trumpeter Construction Company of Peru was notified Saturday that it secured a state contract for about five miles of road in Putnam County termed State Aid Route 1. The price is $891.59 and the project began this week, involving moving 70,000 yards of earth and culvert work along the river road toward Hennepin.
William A. Boers of Lacon married Thelma Maxedon of Champaign at University Christian church last Monday. Ruth McCloskey and Robert P. Boers attended. The couple honeymooned in Chisago and will live in the Dale Owen residence where Boers will coach Lacon High athletics next year.
A Young Republican meeting will be held in the city hall in Henry Friday night. All young men and women are urged to attend as the Young Republican club of Henry Whitefield and Saratoga townships will be formed. The meeting opens at 8 p.m. with the county chairman serving as temporary chairman.
The Henry Exchange and Security Trust began operations in the former Henry National Bank building. Eldon Armstrong and Eg R. Krum back the venture, with Gladys Sivell assisting. The bank offers deposits insured by the federal government and plans to offer loans later. Hours are weekdays 9 to 4. The institution stresses broad service for farmers, merchants, professionals, churches, clubs, and laborers with drafts and wire transfers available.
Rural towns without banks gain a safe substitute through Exchange Trusts. These trusts, bonded and insured, allow deposits and checks nationwide with funds held as a trust and not loaned. Citizens report deposits secured, loan accommodations better than small banks, and insurance agents linked to farms at favorable rates.
The Democratic women of the 16th district will gather Friday August 28 at the Tazewell county courthouse in Pekin. Mrs Florence Braun state committeewoman will open the meeting at 10 oclock. A luncheon is set for noon and the afternoon speakers will be announced soon. All Democratic women and district candidates are urged to attend.
