A 1928 Varna Township plan proposes a $2020,000 bond issue to fund a major school expansion at Varna High School. The district, with architects Smith Kratz Quinlan, plans a sizable addition to address inadequate facilities and accommodate more students.
Nellie Estes Whitman died Sunday in Peoria after a brief illness at St Francis Hospital. Born November 16, 1913, she lived in Illinois with her parents and married a Eureka man in 1938. Funeral services were held at the Funeral Home with interment in Henwood Cemetery. survivors include her husband and several brothers and sisters.
County library board meets to discuss plans for new facilities and possible expansion. Officials review enrollment trends, funding options, and timelines for a potential library center project in the county.
R B racharde Agnew and his big time orchestra will headline the opening night show of the Marshall Putnam Fair on Tuesday night September 5. Agnew leads a top national band with a full floor show including soloists and three Radke Sisters known for hand balancing and tumbling.
The Illinois Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends will convene at McNabb Friends Church starting 2 p m Thursday August 17. Sessions include routine reports and local projects discussions with a social hour Thursday night. Friday features H Bernard Walton of Philadelphia on Quakerism and its workings. Saturday offers Robert Balderston of Chicago on experiences as a German refugee aid emissary. All sessions are open to the public with worship Sunday at 10 30 a m and a Lundy Memorial program at the Friends Cemetery in the afternoon.
The Farm Bureau announces plans for women to join sports at Urban a Farm Picnic Festival. Events include chair quoits, clock golf, darts, shuffleboard and a potential .22 rifle shoot. Activities run 10 to 12 with instructors at each court, aiming to boost participation and countywide interest.
The Marshall County Board of Review considers equalizing city property assessments across towns after a study showed Toluca and other cities had residential valuations that lagged behind Wenona Henry Varna LaSalle and Sparland. In Toluca 71 properties were raised following state guidance, with increases varying from a few dollars to hundreds.
An Angus Aberdeen calf named Joe owned by 11 year old Lyle Kemnis of Prophets Town won the grand championship at the Henry County Fair 4 H club show in Cambridge. Joe weighed about 950 pounds now after being bought for a club calf at Rock Island yards in October 1988. The Kemnis family plans to enter Joe in the International Livestock Show in Chicago if he stays successful.
The Henry band drew large support with thirty decorated cars at the State Fair in Springfield. An 10 AM concert in a tent led to a 20 minute parade drawing praise for size and quality. Judges expect contest results next week as Arthur Blocher earns credit for improved direction.
Secretary Harold Ickes announced 1939 duck and goose hunting dates with October 22 opening in the intermediate zone including Marshall and Putnam Counties and a December 5 closing. Ducks keep a 10 per day limit, geese drop to four per day. Mallards expected to dominate after the October opening. Mayor Fred A. Ford comments on timing and impact, noting water conditions and feed.
Clarence Schneider, owner of Schneider Fruit Farm near Fleury in Whitefield Township, is erecting a 24 by 30 foot storage building for sorting and forage during apple harvest. The farm spans 17 acres of apples and peaches with berry bushes and plans to expand after purchasing 60 acres of adjoining timber pasture formerly Horatio Hartley property for future orchard use. Locusts damaged this year’s crop less than feared but next year’s may suffer more as locusts strip leaves and foliage.
Ward Beams International Congress of Daredevils brings fifteen motor thrillers to Henry for a single Sept 8 show. The act promises brick wall crash at high speed, T bone ramp jump and nose-first crashes, 70 mph jump with fire and multiple stunts, touted as the fair’s finest entertainment.
Henry Aero Club members toured Chicago municipal airport in a day trip led by sponsor James Tindall. They visited United Airlines shops and two large planes, a 14 seat Boeing and a 21 seat Douglas sleeper, plus hangars of American Airlines Transcontinental Western and National Guard. The group observed hundreds of transcontinental flights and enjoyed a city sightseeing flight. They also met Polish aviator Kurt Runeau at Harvey airport and learned of his upcoming Henry visit for sightseeing flights.
The Marshal Putnam Farm Bureau picnic at Marshall Putnam Fair Grounds on Aug 22 will feature the Softball League final pitting Evans Roberto Hopewell against Richland Bell Plain and Bennington for the championship. The winner advances to the Illinois sports festival at the University of Illinois.
The 100th anniversary death observance for abolitionist pioneer Benjamin Lundy will be held at 3 PM Sunday August 20 in the Quaker Cemetery near McNabb. The event features a monument unveiling by Lundy descendants a keynote by Prof Cuyler Young and a Negro choral performance with the Urban League Choral Society from Chicago and state officials attending.
The Exclusive Sharps and Flats of the Chicago Urban League Singers sponsored by Mrs. Joe Lewis will perform at Henry Christian Church Sunday. A church auxiliary plans a noon dinner for the 43 singers after which they will resume the musical program.
Robert Sémison superintendent of Varna schools says reservations for Varna High School and Young Grade School will be held Wednesday August 23 from 1 to 4 p m at the Varna High School gymnasium.
