The article notes a sailor from Sparland connected to Mr and Mrs Jesse, Reinbeck, and Mrs Doris Reinbeck aboard a U.S. ship. B J Ghiglieri, previously cashier, was chosen president by the Citizens National Bank of Toluca board amid officer elections. He succeeds the late R M Barnes of Lacon as the bank nears the two million dollar mark, with Willam H Hattan as vice president and Elmer J Henn as assistant cashier.
More than a hundred men from Marshall County have had their military discharges filed at the circuit court office in the courthouse at Bacon. There is no charge, and officials urge all discharged veterans to have their records recorded to save time and embarrassment later. Many more veterans are expected to seek discharge recording in the coming months.
Mrs Johnecht 76 a longtime Varna resident died at her Varna home Monday evening after six weeks bedridden. Surviving are her husband three daughters Mrs Anni Pies of LaRose Nm Sophia Schwanke and Mrs Frieda Petrich of War nawa san two grandsons and a stepson. An obituary will follow next week.
Henry Legion Post invites members to a Victory Ball at Henry School gym on August 24. Joe McAllister will serve as master of ceremonies and Jord Ray and his orchestra will provide music, under the auspices of Henry Ost. 423, American Legion.
The 90th Bureau County Fair launches next Wednesday morning August 21 with a four day run featuring horse racing three nights, 29 horse show classes, and a livestock exhibit including three State hog shows. A $7 200 racing schedule highlights the event with a $3 000 stake race daily and entries from five states.
Sergeant Don Clark arrives in Henry from France on a 30 day furlough plus travel time. Clark, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Ivan Clark, served 19 months as a refueling operator with troops and serviced C A 7 aircraft, earning seven battle stars and a unit citation. He landed in New York after a 14 day voyage aboard the S S Nicholas Gilman and traveled to Camp Grant before returning to Henry on Tuesday.
George Thiel 74 of Henry and Marshall County died August 3 after long illness. Born December 21 1870 near Putnam County he farmed all his life, retiring to Henry 14 years ago. Survived by wife Laura and six children including Harry Ben Mildred Ruth Mary. seven grandchildren and two brothers. Funeral August 10 at Green Funeral Home with Rev Eli Comstock officiating. Interment Henry City Cemetery.
A Henry Boy Scout troop held a Monday night court of honor at the Rieta Building to recognize scouts advancing in ranks. Awards and merit badges were presented to Richard Nash, Dick Jensen, and others, with remarks from Master Garrels and a telegram from former Scoutmaster Rev. Richard Pritchard sent from Fort Oglethorpe.
Frank Ziegler shows a 12 pound Mackinaw trout frozen for the trip to Traverse City Michigan where he and Mrs Ziegler mixed work with leisure deep sea fishing on Lake Michigan. They also picked cherries noting excellent quality though not as plentiful as past years priced at four 50 a 16 quart crate.
Theodore Ely and son Teddy visited at the Williams Moores country home in Midlothian. Mrs Mary Ford left for Peru to be with sister Mrs Charles Saedler. Fred A Ford traveled to Lake Forest on business. Several families attended a De Walt picnic and reunion in Lacon with many relatives. A.J. Nauman entered St Margaret’s Hospital for a knee operation. Mr and Mrs Louis Newhalsen and Peter visited the Fred Elys at Edelstein. Dayne Farrane Jerry spent the weekend in Astoria with his parents. Staff Sgt M. W. Clark and brother Duane Clark, veterans of European service, were mentioned. Piranha man and family from Wood River visited with Wilford Longman and family. Mr and Mrs R O Green were dinner guests of Mrs May Lloyd.
Pfc Dean McAllister returns home for a 33 day furlough after seven months in Europe. Wounded by shrapnel during combat at Passau on the Austria Germany border he wears the Purple Heart. He sailed from Austria to Le Havre France then to the Sea Pike and arrived at Orangeburg New Jersey before reporting to Camp Grant.
Corporal Leo J Naumann of Henry receives the Air Medal for exceptionally brave service on the India China airlift. The citation notes night flying and instrument navigation through the Himalaya treacherous routes with enemy activity likely, highlighting his courage, skill, and dedication. Naumann enlisted in 1942 and trained at U S Army Navigation School before departing for service in December 1942.
Miss Jennalie Artman a Wenona native and secretary in a Chicago project department disclosed last week that her work relates to atomic bomb development. Her family, including James Artman, were surprised by the secrecy surrounding the research led by the University of Chicago.
Two McNabb farmers Charles Whitney and Perry Glover toured the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago during a vacation. Whitney, formerly with Farmers State Bank of Lostant, knows bank officials and the group toured vaults. Glover received a package said to contain 1,260,000 in 16 000 denomination bills, noted as useful for closing.
Marshall Putnam County fair leaders announce a major advertising push for the 1945 fair after victory over Japan. Officials expect large crowds as gasoline rations ease. the event plans a $5,000 horse race purse and ongoing improvements at the fairgrounds. Local residents light sirens and celebrate as Japan surrenders, with emphasis on helping returning service members reintegrate into civilian life.
Staff Sergeant Leary, a buddy of Sergeant Leonard Ries, spent the weekend with Ries family in Henry. Leary received an emergency furlough due to his mother's illness. she died after his arrival. Both men served in XI corps in New Guinea, Netherlands East Indies, Philippines, earning five battle stars. They now work as stenographers in Manila Luzon.
Henry in Poshen appears set to advance after the war as aggressive merchants push for growth. The city, with a progressive administration and new water supply work underway, sees reopened bakeries and jewelers, new businesses, and plans for postwar expansion including the Prairie Farms creamery benefiting Henry and surrounding areas. Everett Newman and Wilford Longman hosted Friday visitors.
