Fred E Dawson Passes After Long Illness in Henry

Fredrick E Dawson 62 died Monday August 13 1928 after a prolonged illness. A merchant and respected citizen of Henry Illinois he was born September 3 1865 in Putnam County and married Henrietta Mateer in 1892 later widowed by Lelie Ray Jones. Funeral held Wednesday at 3 with Rev Ivins Chatten officiating. Interment Henry Cemetery.

Moran Couple Survive Sparland Car Accident

Friday afternoon Mr and Mrs Steve Moran of this city were riding down School House Hill at Sparland in a gravel truck used for dike road fill The gears failed the brakes would not hold and the truck rolled toward the Russell yard It jumped the ditch and ended at the brick porch Mrs Moran was thrown out but only bruised The incident could have ended badly if the vehicle had reached the main road.

Survey on Illinois River Barge Crew at Work in City

United States barge 335 with 18 crew members including many University of Illinois students, under associate civil engineer William H. Rayner, anchors in the city for about ten days. They survey from Starved Rock to Peoria to assess dredging costs and chart a 200 by nine foot channel for a planned Great Lakes to Gulf deep waterway.

Henry City adopts annual tax levy ordinance

The City of Henry approved its annual tax levy ordinance on Monday night August 6. The total levy is 22 000.00 dollars to be raised by general taxation. The distribution to departments follows the stated amounts.

Marshall Putnam Fair Promises Big Crowds and Thrills

The Marshall Putnam Fair opens in Henry on September 18 for four days of races farm exhibits and new acts. Top attractions include the Riding Clarks Ringling style trapeze acts the Clarkonians and Poole's Blue Ribbon Society Circus high flying dogs and trained apes. The opening Tuesday features a championship horse pulling contest with two classes and $200 in prize money measured by a tractor dynamometer.

Death Calls Sister of Amroe J Longman

Miss Reba Longman of Lacon died in Chicago after a postoperative blood clot ended her life. Born June 29 1897 she was 31 and taught home economics in Lacon Manuel High School Peoria and Lacon High School. Interment at Putnam cemetery followed funeral services at the Methodist church.

Hunger Striker at Lacon Released After 18 Days

H. M. Butcher was released from Marshall county jail at Lacon Friday evening after an 18 day hunger strike during a year old assault conviction. He said initial anger kept him from eating and he later lost about 30 pounds before release.

Long Row Garden Tour Planned for August 21

The University of Illinois gardening expert B L Weaver will lead a long row garden tour in two sessions on August 21. Morning stops include Henry Immel Emil Zellmer Oscar Fiedler and Henry parks for lunch. A Sunday horseshoe elimination at City park selected Wayne Buck and Gaylord Paterson to represent the men over 18 at the district picnic in Peoria on August 11 with Paul Crank and Lester Morgvensen chosen for the boys. Marshall County Centennial Plans Parade at Lacon

Marshall county marks its 100th birthday with a centennial celebration at Lacon on Thursday August 30 in conjunction with the Old Settlers Picnic. A giant street parade will feature every township and county groups with floats. Henry City Council and Kiwanis groups coordinate planning with A J Ironmonger chairing and committees for finance arrangements and float design by Mr and Mrs Burt.

Dike grading contract let for Lacon Sparland project

The state highway department awards S. J. Groves & Sons of Minneapolis a 51 596.40 contract to grade and widen the Lacon Sparland dike. Work began last Monday with 12 trucks hauling earth from Route 29. about half a mile north of Sparland, and six weeks are needed to complete the heavy grading with rip rap to follow.

Joe Bender and his daughters Miss Tracy and Mrs Tony Schacher with husband and daughter, who have stayed here several weeks, visited relatives in Peru on Sunday and left Monday for their home in Humphrey Nebraska.
