The Marshall Putnam Fair Association plans the ninth annual fair at Henry from September 16 to 19. Free admission for all under 15 on Tuesday, grand fireworks midweek, novelties and free acts daily, plus large purse races and substantial premiums. Officials credit strong 1929 results and pledge high class entertainment and expanded exhibits.
The Brokaw family gathered for a reunion at Glen Oak Park in Peoria last Sunday. Attendees included A N Stein and family from Trivoli, C R Brokaw and family from North Putnam, Alva Brokaw from Tiskilwa, Miss Vandervort from Tiskilwa, Bessie Rickard of Peoria, Earle McKee family, and Nye family of near Tiskilwa. Orville Brokaw led a musical contest with accompanist Miss Vandervort.
The Marshall Putnam counties annual farmers frolic is planned for Tuesday August 26 at Riviera Park Henry. The committee aims to make the 1930 picnic a record breaker with heightened efforts for a big affair.
Announcement records the sale of a 200 acre Bureau county farm owned by Levi Hoover to Nels Johnson of Wyanet for 185 dollars per acre. The modern property is described as among the best in the district.
City workmen trimmed low hanging branches and removed decayed limbs in Central Park. Several aging trees were grubbed out to aid younger stock, greatly improving the park's appearance this week.
A 0.28 inch rain and a late storm cut a prolonged drought across Marshall and Putnam counties. The wind and rain damaged crops, tore limbs from trees, and disrupted light and phone service briefly. Forecasters said the shower helped revive parched ground and may save late corn, though there is uncertainty about tassel pollen and maturity. Gentle showers Wednesday further benefited the area.
With five weeks to go for the Marshall Putnam Fair and the 4-H show, 4-H members prepare 66 beef calves the largest on feed yet 120 pigs across litter gilt and barrow clubs and 35 dairy animals including Jersey Guernsey and Holstein breeds 45 poultry club members tend White Leghorn White Rock White Wyandotte Buff Orpington and Rhode Island Red birds.
The Marshall county board of review chaired by H. P. Jensen with George Hacker C. B. Stateler and C. F. Buck are winding up work for 1930. They have met five days a week since July 4 and have been equalizing real and personal property valuations as objections rise.
About 350 gathered at the Ed Balensiefen home to welcome the couple in Whitefield last Wednesday evening. A fish fry was served and attendees reported an evening of real pleasure.
Mr and Mrs David R Blackwell of Market street Marshall county celebrate 58 years of marriage with a Sunday gathering. They wed August 11 1872 at Steuben township and have six sons and two daughters. Family attendees from multiple towns joined in a cafeteria meal and photo session.
The fifty sixth session of Illinois yearly meeting of Friends will meet at the Friends meeting house near McNabb from August 15 to 20. Sessions include daily meetings, lectures by Jesse H. Holmes on Russia and youth religion, executive committee work, Sunday School programs, peace and welfare reports, picnics, and a closing business session. Dr. Holmes, Swarthmore professor, will speak on inner light and world conditions with visiting delegates from Illinois and Indiana yearly meetings.
Reading of the eighth query and reports from the General Conference Advancement Committee and the Illinois Yearly Meeting Advancement Committee. The 10:00 a.m. worship meeting includes these readings and reports as part of the ongoing session.
Henry M. E. Church head expected to return from vacation tomorrow. Usual church services will be resumed next Sunday August 17.
George M. Ely of Lacon has been appointed game warden by Ralph Bradford, director of the state department of conservation in Springfield. The appointment, effective August 1, places his patrol between Lacon La Salle and Peru, with calls possible from Havana to Fox Lake. Ely succeeds W. S. Osborne of Sparland who held the post for several years.
Premium lists for the ninth annual Marshall Putnam Fair, prepared by the Henry News Republican job department, are being distributed this week. The event features livestock shows, exhibits in farm machinery, cars, grain, fruit, flowers, dairy and household products, needlework, fine arts, and educational displays. Races run Wednesday to Friday with added money events under American rules, overseen by Ben McAllister, Halsey Monier, Dr Charles Smith, and George A Burt, plus free acts and a Tuesday start with judging, concerts, and pony races. Francis Keegan will be in Henry daily for interview access and premium lists.
Henry council No. 2406 Knights of Columbus completes plans for its ninth annual picnic at Riviera Park on Sunday August 17. Basket dinner at noon events at 1 pm speeches at 2:30 baseball game Lacon Greys against Putnam All Stars dancing boxing exhibition and free park admission.
F. H. Hoxie Jr of Peoria bought the Second street pool and billiard room from Keegan and Bergantz and took possession last Friday. He has titled the new business Puff Cigar Store and plans to reside in Henry with his family once a suitable home is found.
Next Saturday evening Riviera Park in this city will host old and new time dances. A real orchestra has been secured to provide music for the occasion and all are cordially invited, with the management promising a good time for everyone.
Henry leaders consider competing gas franchise proposals from Public Service Company of Northern Illinois and Great Northern Utilities Inc. A council committee, trips to Indiana sites, and a special meeting set for August 18 aim to assess installing gas plants and pipelines with rates to be set by the state commerce commission.
Orville Brokaw, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Brokaw of Peoria, won first in his class as a tenor soloist at a Peoria musical contest held Saturday at the Palace Theatre. He performed at Glen Oak Park Sunday afternoon and will represent Peoria district in Chicago on August 23. The event featured other singers, a male quartet, orchestras and bands from various towns.
James D. Mills of Broadmoor and Olive I. Davis of Havana were married Saturday evening August 9 at the home of Rev. David W. Madden. They will reside in Broadmoor where Mills works as a section laborer, accompanied by the bride’s sister and her husband and the groom’s mother.
Officials and community members are urged to attend a Putnam Fair Board meeting in the Community room of the Henry National Bank building on Monday evening August 18. All interested parties should plan to be present.
