Pension Applications Surpass Five Hundred in Main County

Henry Horner orders expanded state investigations to speed old age assistance. About 429 applications exist in Main County with 32,082 approved statewide by August 1. County offices average low investigations per worker, risking delays for needy elderly citizens.

Hunter named legion post commander for coming year

Members of the Legion post No. 328 named Jack Hunter as post commander for the coming year at a meeting. Other officers selected include Joseph Hageman J Ray Keegan and Harold J Bullington with E G Moslander as sergeant at arms. The service officer for next year to be chosen later. The meeting followed the national officers’ scheduled for August 26.

Henry Streator Cars Crash Between Chillicothe

Sunday night Mrs. Arthur Smith and her husband were returning from a visit when their car was rear ended by Re B Patel of Streator near Tony Turk's coal mine. The left rear wheel was knocked off, Mrs. Smith was knocked unconscious with a severe nose bleed, and Mrs. Patch suffered a broken arm. Mr. Smith and Mr. Patch were not injured.

Plans Set for Marshall County Old Settlers Day in La Con

Plans for the Marshall County Old Settlers reunion at La Con advance with an August 27 date. The committee sought Frank O Lowden as speaker but he cannot attend. E M Dirksen will speak briefly in the evening. A street dance by Hinkey and his Royal Commanders is planned, with kittenball finals at the high school field and carnival booths and rides for children.

The Warden children of Galva a colored quartet of two boys and two girls return for the farm bureau picnic at the fairgrounds Henry on Tuesday August 25. Fred Bestold of Lacon a former state legislator sold his dairy business to Wayne Wier of Lacon. Bestold will continue cattle and hog raising. Wayne Wier son of Charles and Mrs. Wier is a College of Agriculture Illinois graduate and Holstein exhibitor at the Marshall Putnam fair in Henry.

Death takes George White Hennepin man

George S. White 80 died at his home in Hennepin at 1 30 am Sunday after an extended illness. Born in Leepertown Bureau county December 1 1855 he spent his life in Bureau and Putnam counties. He lived in Hennepin ten years unmarried, with brother Tiberius E. White and sister Mrs Laura Fox surviving. Funeral 2 pm Tuesday with Rev Gillis of the Hennepin Methodist church officiating. Thunder showers and lightning hit Marshall county Sunday night providing the first substantial rain since last May. Cantata The Harvest Proves Big Success in Henry Gym

The Harvest cantata presented by Marshall Putnam residents at Henry gym on August 7 drew full seating and enthusiastic reviews. F W Reuter led the 30 minute orchestra from Lacon, Gretchen Schiffbauer conducted the chorus of Henry and Rob ert Klein supervised folk dancers adding harvest and cider making scenes. WPA employment figures for Marshall County and Illinois

A July 15 report from the area statistical office of the Works Progress Administration shows 159 persons in Marshall county employed on WPA projects excluding sponsors and NYA. The breakdown lists 124 men and 235 women, with 149 from relief rolls. Illinois WPA hires total 156 527 including work camps as of July 16.
