Estimated 600 adults attended the open house at the new Morris building along with many accompanying their parents. The center wing facing Third Street shows offices and 2-bedroom apartments, each with private utilities, telephones, television receptacles, and multiple antennas atop a 2-tower setup.
Registration for Henry Grade School will be held August 17 and 18. Students in K through 8 must register to receive classroom supplies, with book rental set at 7.50 per pupil and school insurance at 2.00 for K-6 and 3.00 for 7-8. A year round 24 hour coverage option is offered at 12.00 per pupil.
Henry Grade School board meeting opened bids for milk bread and bus insurance. Colonial Bakery won bread at 27 cents per loaf and 24 cents per dozen buns. Supreme Dairy of Oglesby won milk at 61 cents per gallon. Country Companies was chosen for bus insurance totaling 244.00 for three 66 seat buses and a 16 seat wagon. Howard Anderson hired as bus driver and Mrs. Robert Helper as part time cook. Board seeks head driver mechanic and part time secretary helper. Citizens Advisory committee members to be named next week. Clifford Fountain named board representative. All bills and payrolls approved. Next meeting set for Monday September 14.
Residents express satisfaction with the invitation to inspect the building and the prompt signups of the first tenants for occupancy, fueling anticipation for the opening.
Carr Bros of McNabb Illinois paid 4000 dollars for the top selling Hampshire boar at the 27th National Hampshire Meat Hog conference in St Joseph Missouri August 2 to 4. The January farrowed boar, from a B led Meat Sire line, placed third in its class behind the grand and reserve grand champions. The consignor was Wm Nash and Sons of Sharpsville Indiana. The McNabb firm also exhibited another January farrowed boar and a gilt. The event drew over 600 exhibitors and spectators from 25 states to the St Joseph Stockyards pavilion for market and breeding shows, a type contest, judging, and queen contest. John Larrick of Austin Minnesota judged the breeding stock.
The fourth annual pork pit roast dinner by the Hennepin Township Betterment Association drew 1,973 visitors in Putnam County. About 1,878 dinners were served despite rain, with excess pork sold as sandwiches. Funds will support township improvement programs.
The McNabb Ameri department announces the fall festival will run Friday September 10 through Sunday September 12 at McNabb park. Kenneth Graseer is general chairman for the event which includes a carnival entertainment and refreshment concessions.
Henry city council completed the planning and zoning commission roster with Thomas Duke, a former alderman and claims adjuster for Country Insurance, nominated by Mayor Magelli and approved unanimously. Leonard Ries elected vice chairman. Rita Kofold to serve as secretary. Regular meetings set for the second Tuesday each month.
Funeral services were held for Keith David Shurts 5 at Henry Methodist Church with Rev. George Hunt officiating. He died Thursday August 5 from burns sustained at his Henry home after a 7:45 am accident and transport to St Margarets hospital. Survived by parents Ronald and Lois Shurts and extended family.
The Shurts family thanks everyone for assistance and expressions of sympathy after the accident. Special thanks are extended to the brothers, sisters, and grandparents for their help during this time.
Henry Grade School will begin the new school year on August 30 at 1 30 p m with buses running five hours later than last year. The first full day is Tuesday August 31. Kindergarten starts August 31 with no class on August 30 and pupils will be notified by August 26 if in A M or P M sections. Lunches cost 35 cents and milk for sack lunches costs one cent per glass. A staff meeting is scheduled for 8 30 a m Monday in the faculty lounge.
Andrew J. Wolf a prominent McNabb farmer died August 5 1965 after a lifetime of farming in St. Clair and Putnam counties He was born December 3 1887 near Fayetteville and married Edna Wilson in 1917 He belonged to the German Evangelical church later joined Friends and was active in the Grange Farm Bureau and local communities He is survived by his wife two daughters a son eight grandchildren a sister and a brother The family expresses thanks for community support and contributions to the American Friends Service Committee in his memory.
Sparland High sets student registration dates on August 23 and 24. Freshmen register August 23 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Sophomores register August 23 afternoon. Juniors register August 24 from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Seniors register August 24 afternoon. Insurance payment, book purchases or rentals, and class schedules will be provided.
The Marshall County Welfare Services committee will meet Thursday evening Aug 19 at the Hotel Henry. After dinner a business meeting will follow with the program led by Francis McEvoy of Henry director of public aid in Marshall county. A E Ertle of Henry is chairman.
Henry city council announced a 12000 program to install 3000 feet of new six inch water mains at about 4 per foot. The project funds pipe purchase and installation by city workers to improve service in the south part and to serve a new subdivision on the Mrs Lloyd Schlosser property developed by Herschel Robison. Robison will pay about 1400 for half of 700 feet of mains. the rest is city cost.
Virden E Staff announced the state is studying relocating about 117 miles of expressway through the Upper Illinois Valley from near LaSalle Peru along the river to Lincoln on Route 66 and Route 55. The plan aims to create a four lane high speed link Chicago to Peoria and Peoria to Springfield, amid local opposition and questions about improving existing routes.
The council discussed a yearly service cost around 95 dollars and two notices of violation from the State of Illinois regarding a new trailer park ordinance in Henry. Action is expected soon. Complaints about the old grade school property were raised and plans to remedy the situation were noted. Robert Davis and Louis Stadel attended the city council meeting.
A southbound Santa Fe freight derailed 25 cars 12 miles northeast of Streator between Kinsman and Ransom. No injuries reported. both main tracks fouled trapping trains and routing orders moved trains via alternate lines until normal service could resume.
