The Putnam district schedules a late August start for its schools with four hours of instruction on opening day. Students require physicals before riding buses and before starting classes, while staff list includes several teachers across subjects.
Louis B. Phillips of Varna resigns as head of local Selective Service board No. 169 in Marshall County after six years. He will leave effective Aug. 1. The board includes Deimas Pettett Lacon Ed Baker Wenona and Mark Allard Henry. vacancy to be filled at the next meeting.
Miss Alice Monier 84 native of LaPrairie died Wednesday at St Francis hospital Peoria after a short illness Her funeral was held at Clugston Memorial home with Rev Fernandez Arcadia Presbyterian in charge Interment followed at Saroga cemetery Surviving are a sister and three brothers nephews and nieces gave to Peoria Heart fund in her memory She was member of La Prairie Presbyterian church North Peoria Woman's club and North American Manx society Local obituary lists birth December 30 1869 in LaPrairie and 44 years in Peoria
Henry Theatre opens a four day run from August 11 to 14 starring Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz and Marjorie Main in The Long Long Trailer. Metro color production directed by Pandro S. Berman promises top family entertainment and TV duo appeal.
Henry-Senachwine Sparland Mid-County Magnolia-Swaney and Hopkins FFA clubs showcased projects at the Section V FFA fair at Eureka. About 200 exhibitors and 300 entries in the swine division highlighted awards for Jersey and Brown Swiss cattle, Hamp shire and Yorkshire hogs, Berkshire and Poland China breeds, and multiple vegetable and gilt trophy wins.
Mrs Perdew and Mrs Dauber returned from a four day convention in Chicago. Delegates from the local unit Mrs aon Thompson represented the 16th district and Mrs Forrest Wood department assistant sergeant at arms attended the meetings.
Marshall county board of school trustees will hold hearings in Lacon on Monday August 23 to consider two petitions for land transfers between districts. Ford Peterson of Washburn seeks detached 1400 acres from Low Point Washburn to LaRose district. George R Spangler asks 200 acres detached from LaRose to Mid County district.
Mrs Lena Johnson 62 died Saturday Aug 7 at her son Ronald's home after weeks of illness. Born Burns Ky she married Guy D Johnson in 1915. Survived by son Ronald M Johnson daughter Marguerite Van Lingen two grandchildren and siblings. Graveside services were held in Hudson Ky after a memorial service in Henry with Dr Chester B Grubb in charge. The family thanks friends for kindness during the bereavement.
Pfc Richard E Glenn 21 son of Mr and Mrs Murray O Glenn Henry Illinois serves with the 712th transportation battalion in Korea. He is an operations clerk in the railway operating unit handling troop and supply movements for UN forces on the peninsula. Glenn joined the army in November 1952 and arrived overseas the next July. His twin brother Pvt Donald Glenn serves in the same battalion since March this year.
Weather observer Allen Tutt records 2.2 inches of rain in the first ten days of August. The heaviest fall was 0.9 inch last Wednesday. August reports list daily totals for Aug.
Miss Sarah Reynolds of Hennepin died Tuesday morning at St Margaret's hospital after returning from California where she had lived for 40 years. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Dysart funeral home. Mr and Mrs Harold Dawson and family spent Sunday in Mendota with the Gene Steele family.
The Marshall Putnam Stabilization and Conservation committee will begin taking over 1953 loan and purchase agreement corn Monday. There are 1,537,148 bushels under purchase or loan in the two counties with 315 new government storage bins arriving. Bins will be erected at Camp Grove Broadmoor Rutland Wenona Evans McNabb Granville and Varna, 75 by Columbia Steel Tank and the rest from Butler Brothers. A second allocation of bins is expected this week. The Senate approved 90 to 92 percent price supports for six crops, with a prior House vote, to replace a prior 99 percent system. Parity guarantees fair farmer returns relative to prices.
Funeral services for Thomas M Kennedy who died at his Granville home Tuesday morning Aug 3 from injuries after a fall were held at the Dysart chapel at 1 30 pm Friday. Rev Reinold Heinrich of the Evangelical United Brethren church officiated and burial was in Lacon cemetery. Pallbearers included William H Glover Dr R M Germano Granville Joe Vacca Mark Arnold Ashdown McNabb Judge Albert Pucel Hennepin and Francis Murphy Putnam.
Sgt Donald Dunham of Toluca is at home with his parents for a 15 day leave after 18 months in Korea. He arrived in the U S this summer and will report back for duty at Camp Carson.
Howard Tolley MP Farm Advisor notes overall strong corn and soybean prospects with hail and wind damage in some counties. He warns of corn borer damage, advises spraying for heavy second brood, and suggests planting rye as winter feed in September or October to improve pasture for hogs and dairy cattle.
Fire in the American Distilling plant at Pekin caused millions in damage and thousands of barrels of liquor burned. Fire Chief Walter Duke offered Henry’s 750 gallon a minute pumper and standby crews if needed as Pekin and Peoria fire departments fought the blaze. Water shortages hampered nearby units though major damage and losses were logged, with the blaze still under assessment.
Bertha Ewing 15 of Saratoga township Marshall county died instantly Tuesday afternoon August 10 in a tractor accident on the Willis Shearer farm after losing control on a steep road and being pulled from the tractor by fence barb wires. An inquest returned a verdict of accidental death with forthcoming funeral arrangements through Kidd funeral home Toulon. Bertha’s siblings and parents survive with services planned at the Saratoga Methodist church and burial in Lyndon J near Morrison.
Eighteen of nineteen Moews Seed Co district sales managers and their wives registered at Hotel Kaskaskia for a manager's convention in the Red room at 9 30 Monday. Earl Buhn, general sales manager, led the program. Warren Moews coordinated the morning session. Mrs Gladys Moews welcomed guests. a Sunday picnic on the Buhn lawn preceded the formal opening. Wilbur Schmitt and daughter Jean visited the Herman Mattern family. Jean stayed with relatives through Wednesday.
Mrs. Raffensperger of the Henry Public Library urged wealthy donors to support a new library building. A anonymous donor mailed $100 in memory of an early Marshall county resident, boosting the fund toward about $2,500. The library has previously received several substantial gifts and bequests, with no definite new location announced.
Theodore Kaifer 84, a respected resident, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday. Survived by son Ivan of Sparland and three grandchildren Teddy Kaifer Carol Chi aney and Mrs Earl Connelly. brothers William and Edward. wife Lola Chesney preceded him. Funeral held at Green Funeral Home with Dr T J Crapp officiating, burial in city cemetery. A complete obituary will follow next week.
A Henry News Republic obituary misreported the Bureau Valley Chief of Princeton ceasing publication. By Wednesday a staffer says plans changed and the Chief will resume this week with future publication details to be announced. Also notes social dinner at the Jefferson Hotel.
