Henrys Civil Defense Council plans a complete blackout on August 19 1942 from 10 to 10:30 p.m Central War Time across districts 1 through 17. Local leaders including J W Coleman Claude Davis and Mayor L F Klein organize wardens fire watchers and air raid teams to darken streets, power down city hall windows, and maintain strict lights control to aid wartime defense.
Pursuant to a U S Army blackout order Henry citizens must extinguish lights from 10 to 10 30 p m Wednesday August 12 1942. The air raid warning lasts three minutes and the all clear will follow. City hall is the control center with auxiliary police and firemen on duty by 9 45 p m. Wardens and fire watchers are listed by zone with names and streets to contact. A $200 penalty for violations is enforcement.
The text records a ceremony involving Ruth Peblaht of Moline and former coach E Swanson, who taught at a local school in Ebaburg last year, with the marriage taking place on a Saturday in July.
A large barge owned by Federal Barge Lines carried 30 000 bushels of corn at the W. W. Dewey and Son river grain elevator in Henry last week. The vessel, bound south, has a 50 000 bushel capacity.
The United States Organization drive in Marshall County nears completion with over 1100 dollars raised. Wayne E. Wier of Lacon reports totals from 11 of 12 townships with Henry Township leading contributions, and 12 townships forming chapters to continue the drive.
State auditor Arthur C. Lueder announced July old age assistance payments rose to 150000 recipients totaling 4,017,038 dollars, up 43,286 from June. Marshall County had 360 recipients at 8,361 dollars and Putnam County 135 recipients at 3,741 dollars.
The list of Lacon men serving in the nation s armed forces has increased to 91. The breakdown by branch is shown with Marines Coast Guards and other services, reflecting current totals across the armed forces.

Local Councils of Defense in Districts 1 through 17 receive orders from William F Waugh chair of the Civil Protection Committee. Vehicles may run under dimmed lights at speeds not exceeding 15 mph during the August 12 1942 blackout from 10 00 p m to 7 30 p m with interstate plates visible. Commercial cars delivering military supplies may move under dimmed lights at 15 mph if credentials from the Illinois Traffic Engineer designate them as war transportation. Government and armed forces vehicles may proceed with such credentials.
Putnam County joins with nearby counties in Illinois to stage a general blackout on Wednesday night August 12. A Monday meeting at the Hennepin courthouse set the plan with about forty-five county and township officials and leaders in attendance. Rural wardens will lead the blackout with township chairmen appointed for rural areas. Lyle Morine, George Freer, L. F. Boyle, and Kenneth Edgerley named rural chairs in respective townships. William Downey of Senachwine Township chaired the meeting as county board chair and Putnam County Council of Defense leader.
Marshall and Putnam counties will form a single unit for the upcoming fall salvage campaign. Roy W. Miller and William Downey will coordinate for Marshall and Putnam respectively as T J McHugh from Chicago directs the meeting at eight tonight at the Marshall County Court House. The telegram lists invitees including city salvagers merchants clubs and press authorities from both counties.
Private Joseph M Kapraun son of Mr and Mrs M J Kapraun has served in the army since May 5 and has gained 11 pounds. He is stated to be well treated and enjoying his work. His address at Fort Knox Kentucky APO 258 is listed. His younger brother Edward is taking his place on the farm.
A list of soldiers in the U S Army and Navy at various posts includes Corporal Winfred E Mounts at Camp Wolters Texas Private Eugene V Stadel at Camp Grant Illinois Private Leonard J Ries at Scott Field Illinois Private Arthur L Johnston at Fort Knox Kentucky and Sergeant Robert A Barker at Maxwell Field Alabama among others.
Private Stanley Miller, 22, son of Mr and Mrs Vern Miller of McNabb, was inducted into the army on February 1, 1942. He was first sent to Camp Robinson in Little Rock Arkansas. His current address is 793 Ord 29th Ad Gp Stinson Field San Antonio Texas US. He has promised to write a letter for publication in the Henry News Republican soon.
The Henry City Council settled with J. P. Wetherby Construction of Ottawa for summer street work at a total cost of 32 927 67 with 28 927 67 already paid and 4 804 53 due. Additions included extra street work, private-property charges, and various bituminous and aggregate costs. The engineer J E Raffensperger approved the final figures and the balance was paid August 3, 1942.
Carl Diehl editor and publisher of the Toluca Star Herald died at 4 45 Sunday morning at St Marys Hospital Streator after an extended illness He had been able to continue editor duties until shortly before his death Funeral services were held at 2 o clock Tuesday from the Diehl home Burial followed in Toluca cemetery Funeral director Peter J Aimone Sr survived by his wife and two children Charles Diehl of Chicago and Gloria of Toluca A sister Mrs Cora Hawes of Chicago Heights also survives
J W Van Doren donated 3500 phono records to the Minonk American Legion drive. The largely unused stock from Van Doren Jewelry Store will aid the fundraiser. The gift was made on behalf of his son First Lieutenant Franklin Van Doren, serving in Australia.
Col Paul Armstrong of Illinois selective service told a Peoria area meeting that able bodied men 20 to 44 may be drafted within six months. He warned that deferments will shrink and Congress lowering the draft age is unlikely, with 4.6 million men to be called by 1942 and production urged to shift to women.
The Marshall County Rationing Board reorganizes to split duties between sugar and food rationing led by Robert White Ray Saltzman and Dr R S Bayne and others oversee tires bicycles and auto rationing. The staff at Lacon includes Josephine Grieves Alicé Lloyd and Lura Long.
All township minute men appointed as rural home defense officials are asked to attend a meeting at the court house in Lacon at 8 o'clock on Monday night August 10. Plans for aiding the blackout test on Wednesday night August 12 will be set at that time. R F Brown sheriff of Marshall County.
Secretary Stimson rejected farmer appeals for wartime furloughs to aid harvest, stating that any interference with rapid and efficient preparation of the armed forces for combat must be halted. The plea from Northwest wheat farmers was firmly denied.
The Henry Sugar Rationing Board will meet on Fridays to serve families not yet issued canning permits. Hours are 1:30 to 4:00 PM in the Farm Bureau building community room.
