Klein Returns to Duty as Henry City Council Meets

Sparland Council Plans Another Village Well

In a special meeting the Sparland city council decided to drill another village well near the current site due to a marked water shortage after the Dewey land incident. The decision follows a period of reduced water pressure and ongoing efforts to secure adequate supply.

Clarence W Fleming Sparland Mail Carrier Dies Sudden

Funeral services held for Clarence W Fleming 61 Sparland mail carrier who died suddenly at home Friday July 30 after returning from a funeral. He leaves wife two sons Donald and Paul one daughter Elva Lou Ingels his mother Mrs Anna Fleming two brothers Mervin and Arthur a sister Mrs Elsie Buck and three grandchildren. A group of Rural Mail Carriers attended. He was laid to rest in Sparland cemetery.

Henry Building and Loan names new officers at annual meeting

The Henry Building and Loan Association held its annual meeting at the Edward street office. Directors Edward J. Hoscheidt Harold Bullington and Richard Di Finigeld were reelected for three years. Assets rose by 58000 to 492631.85 with a 3 percent dividend paid and reserves boosted. The association now accepts loan applications within a 50 mile radius of Henry. Officers elected for one year: President Richard Firgele First vice president Charles F Merdian Second vice president Albert W Barth Secretary treasurer Miss Gladys Sivell. Additional directors include William Barry Bruce Bauter Harold Bullington Robert W Dewey and George Koehler Jackie Kirk. San Diego visitor Steve Streitmatters noted.

Steve Hunter Takes New Post with Lauhoff at Crete Neb

Steve Hunter former advertising manager for Clay Equipment of Cedar Falls Iowa joins Lauhoff Grain company Inc in Crete Nebraska to expand its farm feed division. He will oversee the Crete plant expansion while his wife Mary Allard and two children join him after traveling from Iowa City. Hunter started in journalism at Henry News-Republican and later graduated from the University of Illinois School of Journalism.

City Council Considers Henry Lock Property Gift

City-Wide August Sale Days Planned by Henry Merchants

Henry merchants finalize plans for a city wide sale event to run next Friday and Saturday August 13 and 14. Virtually all merchants will participate with back to school bargains and summer and new fall merchandise joined in a combined sale. The promotion follows the Dollar Days model used in June and last year.

Marian Year Novena At St Mary's Church Readied

A Marian year novena at St Mary's Church will run from Friday morning to August 15 the Feast of the Assumption. Daily Masses at 7 or 7:30 am with weekday confessions and Holy Communion before Mass. The novena closes at the 10 am Mass on Sunday August 15.

4 H Evening 500 at Marshall Putnam Fair and World Theme

The 4 H show at Marshall Putnam fair opens with Hands Across the World, six country dances led by Alicia Henning and narrated by Merry Makers 4 H club. Schedule includes dairy beef judging, clothing and food judging, sheep poultry and misc judging, livestock parade, and grand champion steer event.

Death of Sparland resident George Wiley at 75

George Anson Wiley 75 a Sparland resident died Thursday evening July 29 at St Francis hospital Peoria after a brief illness Born near Macomb IL Oct 19 1878 he was married to Gualetta Shim June 4 1901 They celebrated a golden anniversary a few months before her death in 1951 He served as Sparland Methodist church trustee and county home superintendent for 23 years He belonged to the Masonic lodge and Kiwanis club in Chillicothe Survived by four daughters six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews Memorial services were held Sunday Aug 1 1954 at the Spain and Methodist church Continued on page 2.

Thomas Kennedy Veteran Putnam County Educator Dies

Thomas M. Kennedy 77 a Granville educator and former Putnam county superintendent died from injuries after an accidental fall. He taught in rural Putnam schools 16 years and led Mark Grade School 14 years, guiding Americanism in county schools. A sister from Los Angeles and several nieces survive. Funeral arrangements pending Dysart chapel.

Henry firefighters unveil a fully equipped panel truck funded by local citizens and the department treasury. The unit carries a 45 foot three section ladder, smoke and oxygen masks, resuscitator, oxygen cylinders, coats, boots, and other gear to meet the inspection bureau’s standards.
